Annual Report 2017/18 Chairman’s Chief Executive’s Foreword Report

2 3 Tafwyl

Over 40,000 people attended Tafwyl festival over the 9 days in 2018, compared to 38,000 people 48 live bands in 2017. Over 21,000 people came to enjoy the main festival in on the Saturday 33 fringe events and 16,500 on the Sunday. An additional 2,500 people came to one of the 33 Fringe events 80 volunteers bringing the attendance this year to over 40,000 for the first time. 58 partners Tafwyl successfully attracted £37,100 in private sponsorship this year an increase of 28% on 23 sponsors last years’ funding which is extraordinary in this economically challenging time. Nine of the 10,000+ pints sold! sponsors were new partners for 2018 and among them local, national and International brand names: Virgin Money, Wriggle, Brains, Thatchers, Orchard Media, For Cardiff, University of Trinity Saint David, and Effectus HR.

Another new exciting partnership for 2018 was a three-year media partnership with Cardiff based Orchard Media. Orchard collaborated to film the festival, create videos of the bands, create a live video from the main stage to broadcast on a large screen, and get drone footage of the festival. We are already discussing new and exciting ways to develop this partnership for Tafwyl 2019.

A major effort was put into marketing this year’s festival – in Wales and beyond the border, thanks to the support of ‘For Cardiff’ and discussions with Visit Wales. Marketing efforts for Tafwyl 2018 included: A Google Ads campaign, advertisements on Wales Online, advertisements on Bristol/Somerset/Birmingham Live, a Facebook and Twitter campaign with , a digital Billboard on Queen Street, vinyls at bus and train stations, and big advertising posters around the city.

4 5 Leisure Activities for Children

Creating informal and fun opportunities for children and young people to socialise, enjoy and learn new skills outside the classroom and school walls is central to Menter Caerdydd’s work. Working in partnership with Cardiff Council and the Urdd Sports department we offer a diverse and comprehensive programme of clubs across the city during the year, from Swimming, Dance and Drama to Gymnastics and Ukulele.

With the need for Welsh-medium education growing fast in the city, we must identify and develop new working relationships to continue to grow and meet the increasing demand for high-quality Welsh- Open Access language social activities.
