Biographical / Historical Charles Augustus Lindbergh and Anne Spencer Morrow Lindbergh went on a survey flight in 1933 in their Lockheed Model 8 Sirius (which was named Tingmissartoq during this trip). Lindbergh was technical advisor for Pan American Airways (Pan Am) and was sent to research possible transatlantic flight paths. The Page 1 of 2 Photograph of Charles Augustus Lindbergh with Portuguese Naval Aeronautical Service NASM.2019.0010 Lindberghs flew from New York to Newfoundland, then to Europe via Labrador, Greenland, and Iceland. They visited several European cities before flying down the coast of Africa and across the Atlantic to South America. They then flew down the Amazon before going back north to New York. The trip covered 30,000 miles, four continents, and 21 countries. One of their stops was Lisbon, Portugal. Germano de Faria Moura Júnior (1901-1980) served with the Portuguese Naval Aeronautical Service, becoming a second lieutenant in 1924, and attaining the rank of first lieutenant in 1942. He, along with other members of the Naval Aeronautical Service, met with Charles Lindbergh when the Lindberghs stopped in Lisbon on their 1933 survey flight. Scope and Contents This collection consists of one black and white photograph, measuring 9 by 7 inches, of Charles Augustus Lindbergh posed with members of Portugal's Naval Aeronautical Service in Lisbon, 1933. Germano de Faria Moura Júnior can also be seen in the photograph. The photograph has been autographed by Lindbergh. Arrangement Collection is in original order.     Deborah Warner Celestial navigation aloft: aeronautical sextants in the US 'Failure in navigation is often as serious as failure in the power plant or plane itself.' So wrote Philip Van Horn Weems, a 1912 graduate of the US Naval Academy who devoted his remarkable talents and energies to the promotion of celestial navigation aloft. This chapter focuses on American efforts to develop one of these instruments: the sextant that navigators used to determine their locations. It is based, in large part, on the Weems papers and the aeronautical instrument collections in the Smithsonian Institution'! Many of these instruments were technically octants rather than sextants, but since the two terms were often used interchangeably, I will refer to them all as sextants.2 Interest in aeronavigational instruments arose with the demonstration of the military potential of aviation during the First World War, and built slowly in the 1920s. The introduction of commercial transoceanic flights in the mid-1930s, together with growing international unrest, led to increased attention to this technology. The military services purchased large numbers of air sextants in the early years of the SecondWorld War, and again during the Cold War, as did commercial airlines in the postwar period. Some air sextants were used aboard ships at sea. With a standard sextant, the observer looked through the eyepiece and brought the image of a celestial body into coincidence with the actual horizon; with the air sextant, the observer brought the celestial image into coincidence with an artificial horizon. Early celestial navigation aloft took place in open cockpits. The pressurised aeroplanes of the early 1940s had observation domes for navigational use.
