Vucinich Description: Ivo Andric won the 1961 Nobel Prize for Literature for an extraordinary body of fiction and poetry rooted in the politics and cultural history of the Balkans. Andric drew on his formal studies, political activism, diplomatic career, and extended residence in Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia to explore the human links that have united the region, to argue that conflict is not inevitable, and to lay the basis for a unified Yugoslavia. Today, Andric is claimed by all Yugoslavs as their greatest literary figure, but tragically missing the point of his work, often criticized by each group for not championing its own particular cause. Važne institucije godinama su zatvorene zbog rekonstrukcije ili još čekaju sanaciju, a veći broj nekada kultnih mesta više ne postoje ili je izgubio publiku zbog pasivnosti. Iako se na prvi pogled čini da je kulturna scena zamrla i da su nove generacije za nju nezainteresovane, činjenica je da je u 21. veku zapravo promenjena mapa punktova – živih mesta na kojima se stalno nešto događa, gde se kultura stvara. U centru i na periferiji, unutrašnjim dvorištima, tržnim centrima, školama, industrijskim zgradama, na spratovima, u podrumima, magacinima, pored reka ili usred vreve tranzitnog saobraćaja, 5 povremeno u gostima kod institucija, ali i na ulicama, već godinama se zbiva nešto važno, drugačije.

The whole Belgrade riverfront area along the Sava and the Danube Rivers has a large number of abandoned industrial buildings that have significant value and need to be preserved and revitalized. This paper represents a research project conducted by lecturers at the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade in the course History and Theory 1—Visual Culture in Architectural Theory and Practice. In order to provide productive research, we have employed the case study method based on the old Mint “A.D.”, which we have chosen as a characteristic example of Belgrade’s industrial heritage architecture. An important goal of this research is to provide professional information and raise public awareness about the importance and potential of industrial heritage for the future economic, cultural, social and tourist development of the city. This paper analyzes possibilities to comprehend the problems of the city’s industrial heritage protection regarding its historical and urban context, its genesis, authenticity, identity, cultural, architectural, economic, social, productive, creative and environmental values.

Bardos All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Ethnoconfessional Nationalism in the Balkans: Analysis, Manifestations and Managements Gordon N. Bardos For at least the past two hundred years, ethnoconfessional nationalism has been the most powerful ideology and force shaping political and social developments in southeastern Europe. This dissertation argues that Balkan ethnoconfessional nationalism is such an important element in southeastern Europe because it is a collective, chronic and non-economic phenomenon which transcends other political ideologies, generations, or socio-economic classes. As such, conventional Marxist-based approaches to understanding the phenomenon of nationalism, and their intellectual descendants such as the more materially-based forms of social constructivism and instrumentalism, consistently fail to both understand and predict its appeal and success in southeastern Europe. The dissertation concludes by arguing that there are severe limitations to the extent to which outsiders can manage the outcome of ethnoconfessional conflicts; hence, in terms of policy prescriptions, the analysis provided in this dissertation argues for a cautious and modest understanding of the extent to which intervention by the international community can transform Balkans

CEU eTD Collection i Abstract The majority of competitions for administrative buildings in interwar Belgrade gave unsuccessful results, consequently constructed buildings present differences between their shapes and competition projects. In this thesis I analyze factors, which obstructed the work of competitions in the case of administrative buildings. The first part of research is based on the examination of key institutions involved in the architectural process and their influence on the competitive practice. Secondly, I investigate the development of the competitive practice on the whole and problems, which appeared in different stages. On the base of case studies presented in the third chapter this thesis reveals that unsuccessful results of competitions for administrative buildings were connected with the gap between architectural development and stylistic preferences of state institutions. The hypothesis of research is that the character of problems in the competitions changed during the growth of the divergence between directions of architectural searches and demands of state institutions.
