This course explores the historical development of the Italian fashion industry with a particular emphasis on Rome. The course focus is on retail and visual merchandising. It addresses the question of relevance of the in- store consumer experience in response to the spread of e-commerce. In order to explore and evaluate possible answers to this question, students are involved in The Luxury Shopping Experience project. Following clear guidelines, students visit, examine, and report on selected luxury stores located along Via Condotti and Via Borgognona in Rome. This allows students to experience at first hand the way people, including tourists, consume luxury in Rome. Prerequisites: GEP 4180 Research and Writing II Aims and Objectives: The course aims to explore various facets of the Italian fashion industry with a specific emphasis on Rome. It develops an understanding of the cultural history of fashion in Italy and the role it plays in a globalized consumer economy. The relationship between fashion, various media and the consumption practices of luxury fashion in Rome are highlighted. M A R K E T B E AT ITALY Retail Q2 2020 ECONOMY OVERVIEW Despite the partial slowdown of the Covid-19 pandemic, the level of uncertainty is still high and the economic forecasts are likely to change YoY 12-Mo. Chg Forecast during the year. As the current economic crisis is unprecedented, Italian GDP saw a record fall in Q2, but it is likely to rebound in the remaining quarters, performing between -9% and -10% in 2020, slightly below the Eurozone average (-7,9%). GDP will grow 5,7% in 2021 €13,700 and is expected to recover to pre-Covid levels in 2024. The government managed to control the rise of infections after the gradual re- Milan Prime Rent /sqm/yr opening, but the risk of a new outbreak is making consumers cautious and more inclined to save rather than spend. So far, the impact of Covid-19 on unemployment appears to be limited, but official data underestimates the real situation since it does not reflect the lower participation rate and does not consider temporary workers. Fort Vol. 2 1976 Planning versus fortification: Sangallo's project for the defence of Rome Simon Pepper Since 1527, when Rome had been captured and sacked by the mutinous soldiers of Charles V, it had been clear that the defences of the Papal capital were hopelessly outdated. The walls of the Borgo (the Vatican precinct) were constructed during the pontificate of Leo IV (847-855): those of Trastevere and the left bank, enclosing by far the largest part of the city, dated from the reign of the Emperor Aurelian (AD270-75) [1]. Impressive both for their length and antiquity, these walls were poorly maintained and fundamentally unsuitable for defence against gunpowder artillery. In 1534 the Romans were once again forcefully reminded of their vulnerability when a large Turkish fleet moored off the Tiber estuary. Fortunately the hostile intentions of the Turks were directed elsewhere: after taking on fresh water they sailed north to raid the Tuscan coastline. But in the immediate aftermath of the Turkish scare the newly elected Paul III committed himself to an ambitious scheme of re-fortification. Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, advised by many of the leading architects and soldiers employed by the Pope, was commissioned to submit design proposals [2]. Father Alberto Guglielmotti, the nineteenth-century historian of the Papal armed forces, tells us that Sangallo and his consultants decided to replace the Aurelian wall with a new line of works defending the developed areas on both banks of the river. The 18000 metre Aurelian circumfer- ence was to be reduced by half, a decision which is not difficult to understand when one glances at a contemporary map of the city. -
Liturgy, Space, and Community in the Basilica Julii (Santa Maria in Trastevere)
DALE KINNEY Liturgy, Space, and Community in the Basilica Julii (Santa Maria in Trastevere) Abstract The Basilica Julii (also known as titulus Callisti and later as Santa Maria in Trastevere) provides a case study of the physical and social conditions in which early Christian liturgies ‘rewired’ their participants. This paper demon- strates that liturgical transformation was a two-way process, in which liturgy was the object as well as the agent of change. Three essential factors – the liturgy of the Eucharist, the space of the early Christian basilica, and the local Christian community – are described as they existed in Rome from the fourth through the ninth centuries. The essay then takes up the specific case of the Basilica Julii, showing how these three factors interacted in the con- crete conditions of a particular titular church. The basilica’s early Christian liturgical layout endured until the ninth century, when it was reconfigured by Pope Gregory IV (827-844) to bring the liturgical sub-spaces up-to- date. In Pope Gregory’s remodeling the original non-hierarchical layout was replaced by one in which celebrants were elevated above the congregation, women were segregated from men, and higher-ranking lay people were accorded places of honor distinct from those of lesser stature. These alterations brought the Basilica Julii in line with the requirements of the ninth-century papal stational liturgy. The stational liturgy was hierarchically orga- nized from the beginning, but distinctions became sharper in the course of the early Middle Ages in accordance with the expansion of papal authority and changes in lay society. -

Burton’s words invoke the gallery of maps Pope Alexander VII assembled in Castel Gandolfo outside Rome in 1665 and animate Sutton Nicholls’s ink-and-wash drawing of Samuel Pepys’s library in London in 1693 (Fig. 1).2 There, in a room lined with bookcases and portraits, a map stands out, mounted on canvas and sus- pended from two cords; it is Giovanni Battista Falda’s view of Rome, published in 1676. -

Spolia from the Baths of Caracallain Sta. Maria in Trastevere Dale Kinney Eight third-century Ionic capitals with images of Isis, Serapis, and Harpocrates, now in the nave colonnades of Sta. Maria in Trastevere, were taken from one or both of the rooms currently identified as libraries in the Baths of Caracalla. The capitals were transferred around 1140, when the church was rebuilt by Pope In- nocent II. The capitals would have been acquired by confiscation, juridically the pope's prerogative as head of the papal state; the lavish display of all kinds of spolia in Sta. Maria in Trastevere is here interpreted as a self-conscious demon- stration of that prerogative. The identity of the capitals' pagan images would have been unknown to most twelfth-century observers, because the only accessible keys to the correct identifications were one sentence in Varro's De lingua latina and another in Saint Augustine's De civitate Dei. -
Chigi Palace
- Chigi Palace - English Version Traduzione di Giovanna Gallo Ancient palace of the Sixteenth century located in the heart of Rome, it was conceived by Pietro Aldobrandini, Pope Clement VII’s brother and an important representative of the Roman aristocracy. The idea of the original plan, entrusted to the Umbrian architect Bartolini from Città di Castello, was to enlarge a pre-existent block of buildings, to incorporate some more houses and to construct a single building made of three floors with the main entrance on Via del Corso. The ownership of the palace was rather unstable because it was handed several times to other Families, such as the Detis, for almost a whole century, until 1659 when it was purchased by the Chigi family, among whose members there were also some cardinals and one Pope, Alexander VII. The Chigis were rich bankers with Sienese origins and backers of the Vatican and they changed the frame of the building, that was thus named after them. At least for two centuries the palace has been the residence of some aristocratic families and, later on, it became the seat at first of the Spanish Embassy (around the second half of the XVIIIth century ), then of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, being sold at last by the Chigis themselves to the Kingdom of Italy ( Regno d’Italia ) in 1916, when it was assigned to become the seat of the Ministero delle Colonie ( Ministry of Colonial Affairs). In 1922 Benito Mussolini, both as Italian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, ordered to transfer there the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. -

EEXXTTRRAAOORRDDIINNAARRYY JJUUBBIILLEEEE ooff MMEERRCCYY The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy 2015-2016 Pope Francis, who is moved by the human, social and cultural issues of our times, wished to give the City of Rome and the Universal Church a special and extraordinary Holy Year of Grace, Mercy and Peace. The “Misericordiae VulTus” Bull of indicTion The Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, which continues to be the programmatic outline for the pontificate of Pope Francis, offers a meaningful expression of the very essence of the Extraordinary Jubilee which was announced on 11 April 2015: “The Church has an endless desire to show mercy, the fruit of its own experience of the power of the Father’s infinite mercy” (EG 24). It is with this desire in mind that we should re-read the Bull of Indiction of the Jubilee, Misericordiae Vultus, in which Pope Fran- cis details the aims of the Holy Year. As we know, the two dates already marked out are 8 December 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the day of the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, and 20 November 2016, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which will conclude the Holy Year. Between these two dates a calendar of celebrations will see many different events take place. The Pope wants this Jubilee to be experienced in Rome as well as in local Churches; this brings partic- ular attention to the life of the individual Churches and their needs, so that initiatives are not just additions to the calendar but rather complementary. -

The Shops and Shopkeepers of Ancient Rome
CHARM 2015 Proceedings Marketing an Urban Identity: The Shops and Shopkeepers of Ancient Rome 135 Rhodora G. Vennarucci Lecturer of Classics, Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, University of Arkansas, U.S.A. Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the development of fixed-point retailing in the city of ancient Rome between the 2nd c BCE and the 2nd/3rd c CE. Changes in the socio-economic environment during the 2nd c BCE caused the structure of Rome’s urban retail system to shift from one chiefly reliant on temporary markets and fairs to one typified by permanent shops. As shops came to dominate the architectural experience of Rome’s streetscapes, shopkeepers took advantage of the increased visibility by focusing their marketing strategies on their shop designs. Through this process, the shopkeeper and his shop actively contributed to urban placemaking and the distribution of an urban identity at Rome. Design/methodology/approach – This paper employs an interdisciplinary approach in its analysis, combining textual, archaeological, and art historical materials with comparative history and modern marketing theory. Research limitation/implications – Retailing in ancient Rome remains a neglected area of study on account of the traditional view among economic historians that the retail trades of pre-industrial societies were primitive and unsophisticated. This paper challenges traditional models of marketing history by establishing the shop as both the dominant method of urban distribution and the chief means for advertising at Rome. Interpretation of the Function of the Obelisk of Augustus in Rome from Antique Texts to Present Time Virtual Reconstruction

Hiermanseder Hietzing Consult, Vienna, Austria - [email protected] KEY WORDS: Astronomy, Line of Meridian, Historical Texts, Archeology, Simulation, Virtual World Heritage ABSTRACT: About the astronomical use of the obelisk of Augustus on Campo Marzio in Rome, which has already been described by Pliny, well known astronomers and mathematicians like Euler, Marinoni or Poleni have given their expert opinion immediately after it's unearthing in 1748. With the prevailing opinion, based on a brief chapter in "Historia naturalis", it would constitute a line of meridian rather than a sundial, the question had been decided for more than 200 years. In 1976, however, the prominent German archeologist Edmund Buchner established once more the assumption, that the obelisk has been part of a gigantic sundial for the apotheosis of the emperor Augustus. Excavations of the German Archeological Institute in 1980/81, which brought to light parts of the inscriptions of the scale, were taken as a proof of his theory by Buchner. Since 1990 works by physicists and experts for chronometry like Schütz, Maes, Auber, et.al., established the interpretation as a line of meridian. Recent measurements and virtual reconstructions of the antique situation in 2013 provide valid evidence for this argument as well. The different approach to the problem mirrors the antagonism between interpretation of antique texts and the assessment of archeological findings in the light of far fledged historical hypotheses.
