Sightings of bald eagles, countless ducks, hawks, swans, and Canada Geese are commonplace. Spring is Spectacular Magee Marsh Wildlife Area has more than 2,000 acres of prime habitats in which more than 300 bird species have been sighted in the past – making this an outstanding American birding “hot spot.” The wildlife area is open dawn to dusk, year-round. Spring migration of warblers is spectacular; ducks, trumpeter swans, bald eagles, and shorebirds are also common. Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is an over 8,000 acre refuge with winding hiking trails traversing a variety of habitats. Area bird watchers regard the refuge as one of the premier bird watching spots in the Midwest. Trails are open dawn to dusk, year-round. A newly constructed Visitor’s Center is open weekdays. Ottawa County History Ottawa County was formed March 6, 1840, and named for the Indian word meaning “trader”, based on the trading of furs and skins between the Ottawa Tribe and the settlers. 8LI¾IIXSJ'SQQSHSVI3PMZIV,E^EVH4IVV][EW±TYXMR²RIEV7SYXL Bass Island before defeating the British in the Battle of Lake Erie, during the War of 1812. The site now called Put-in-Bay was derived from this IZIRX4IVV]´WWLMT2MEKEVE¾I[EFERRIV[MXLXLI[SVHW±(SR´X+MZI9T The Ship”. Perry’s victory was celebrated throughout the United States, the only surrender of the British Fleet in history, which helped prevent a western invasion of the United States. Middle and North Bass Islands were settled by Germans, who found the lands suitable for growing grapes and making wine. Notably, Middle Bass Island was once a retreat for four Presidents: Hayes, Cleveland, Harrison, and Taft. Built in 1821, and the oldest lighthouse in Ohio, the Marblehead Lighthouse was originally called the Sandusky Bay Light. This noted lighthouse stands at the end of the Marblehead Peninsula, which has been the roughest point on Lake Erie since the beginning of navigation on the Great Lakes. Between April 1862 and September 1865, Johnson’s Island served as a QMPMXEV]TVMWSRTVMQEVMP]JSV'SRJIHIVEXISJ½GIVW2SFYMPHMRKWVIQEMR but the Island is the site of the prison cemetery.
