  • Raft of Incoming, A
Greta Adorni was born in Milan where she graduated in Philosophy and continued her studies with an MA in Curatorial Practices at the Brera Academy. At Birkbeck, she completed her MA in History of Art, which gave her the opportunity to combine philosophical theoretical frameworks with memory and trauma studies. This article is the result of her MA dissertation [email protected] / __________________________________________ This article intends to look at the ways in which three works of art have attempted to deal with the issue of representation and mediation of the refugee crisis. 1 Rather than delving into historical or political discourses surrounding this humanitarian crisis, this article will analyse three works of contemporary art: Fuocoammare (Gianfranco Rosi, 2016), Raft of Lampedusa (Jason deCaires Taylor, 2016) and Incoming (Richard Mosse, 2017) mostly through the spectrum of Professor at UNSW National Institute for Experimental Arts and curator Jill Bennett’s theory of ‘empathic vision’ and ‘transactive art’. Political Philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s notions ‘bare life’ and the ‘Muselmann’ will also be regarded as crucial to an empathic visual engagement with art. These theories have the purpose of injecting new approaches to the idea of ‘breathing through the medium’ as a way of activating representations, and thereby maintaining the meaningfulness of representations of refugees. The three works were selected for their alternative approach to the representation and utilization of the art medium. I will analyse Incoming, a documentary made by Richard Mosse in collaboration with Ben Frost and Trevor Tweeten and screened for the first time at the Curve Gallery, at the Barbican Centre in London from 15 February to 23 April 2017.

Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media no. 18, 2019, pp. 3–11 DOI: https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.18.01 Refugee Filmmaking Editorial Stephanie Hemelryk Donald, Kaya Davies Hayon, and Lucia Sorbera Figure 1: Production still taken for Mare Nostrum (Rana Kazkaz and Anas Khalaf, 2016). Georges Films, Synéastes Film. Photo credit: Eric Devin. The origins of this issue of Alphaville lie in collaborations between the Forced Migration Research Network (UNSW – University of New South Wales) and the Refugee Council of Australia, and in the inspiration afforded us by international colleagues and guests to Sydney (Fadma Aït Mous), Liverpool (Dennis Del Favero) and Lincoln (Hoda Afshar) universities. We have benefited from these academic alliances and invitations, but we also embrace the widest notion of hospitality, whereby the moment of arrival, the request for assistance and shelter, and subsequent decisions over citizenship and long-term residency are located in a moral environment of welcome and mutual learning. We trace and acknowledge our intellectual relationships here in so far as they have allowed us to articulate an emerging and shared recognition that refugee lived experience stands as the barometer for political civility and social health in our time. © Stephanie Hemelryk Donald, Kaya Davies Hayon, and Lucia Sorbera This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License 4 The challenge of the global collapse into conflict and authoritarianism is stark, and the work of refugee filmmakers and documentarists—and indeed those who use scholarship to draw attention to their efforts—is serious and important. This curated collection of essays, films, reflections and reviews seeks to understand the nature and extent of refugee filmmaking today, and to determine who counts as a refugee filmmaker and why.

  • The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather
Finding a Voice: The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather Macdougall A Thesis in the PhD Humanities Program Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Concordia University Montreal, Quebec, Canada August 2012 © Heather Macdougall, 2012 ABSTRACT Finding a Voice: The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather Macdougall, Ph.D. Concordia University, 2012 This dissertation investigates the history of film production in the minority language of Irish Gaelic. The objective is to determine what this history reveals about the changing roles of both the national language and national cinema in Ireland. The study of Irish- language film provides an illustrative and significant example of the participation of a minority perspective within a small national cinema. It is also illustrates the potential role of cinema in language maintenance and revitalization. Research is focused on policies and practices of filmmaking, with additional consideration given to film distribution, exhibition, and reception. Furthermore, films are analysed based on the strategies used by filmmakers to integrate the traditional Irish language with the modern medium of film, as well as their motivations for doing so. Research methods included archival work, textual analysis, personal interviews, and review of scholarly, popular, and trade publications. Case studies are offered on three movements in Irish-language film. First, the Irish- language organization Gael Linn produced documentaries in the 1950s and 1960s that promoted a strongly nationalist version of Irish history while also exacerbating the view of Irish as a “private discourse” of nationalism. Second, independent filmmaker Bob Quinn operated in the Irish-speaking area of Connemara in the 1970s; his fiction films from that era situated the regional affiliations of the language within the national context.

  • This Film Is a Poem 1,380 Words
This Film is A Poem 1,380 words - by Cynthia Close - published in 2016 in Documentary magazine- Review of the newly remastered Criterion released A Poem is a Naked Person, by Les Blank commissioned by Leon Russell, shot from 1972-74. Blu-Ray edition contains: *90 minute restored feature A Poem is a Naked Person *New conversation between musician Leon Russell and Harrod Blank, Les Blank’s son *Excerpts from a 2013 Q&A with Les Blank *The new documentary, A Film’s Forty-year Journey: The Making of “A Poem is a Naked Person”, 2016 *Out in the Woods, a short documentary by Maureen Gosling *An Essay by critic Kent Jones Why has A Poem is a Naked Person, a film Les Blank considered the greatest he ever made, remained virtually unknown and unseen, until now, over forty years after it was completed? An answer to this question can be found in the newly restored, Criterion released Blu-Ray DVD. It is clear that such a project would never have happened if it were not for the persistence and memory of “being there”, of Harrod Blank, Les Blank’s son. As a young boy, tagging along with his filmmaker dad in the backwaters of 1970’s Oklahoma he drew admiring portraits in magic marker of Leon Russell, the intended subject of his father’s film. It was the year following the release of Mad Dogs and Englishmen, a classic concert film starring Joe Cocker and Russell who at that time was at the peak of his fame. Russell was an accomplished pianist, session musician, and star performer who was in the process of building a top notch studio and music compound ninety minutes outside of Tulsa when he and his then-partner Denny Cordell commissioned Les Blank to make what they may have envisioned as a biopic with Leon Russell at the center.

FREE THE ATLANTEAN IRISH: IRELANDS ORIENTAL AND MARITIME HERITAGE PDF Bob Quinn | 256 pages | 15 Jan 2006 | The Lilliput Press Ltd | 9781843510246 | English | Dublin, Ireland Atlantean | Irish identity is best understood from a maritime perspective. For eight millennia the island has been a haven for explorers, settlers, colonists, navigators, pirates and traders, absorbing goods and peoples from all points of the compass. Over the past twenty years Bob Quinn has traced archaeological, linguistic, religious and economic connections from Egypt to Arann, from Morocco to Newgrange, from Cairo and Compostela to Carraroe. Taking Conamara sean-nos singing and its Arabic equivalents, and a North African linguistic stratum under the Irish tongue, Quinn marshalls evidence from field archaeology, boat-types, manuscript illuminations, weaving patterns, mythology, literature, art and artefacts to support a challenging thesis that cites, among The Atlantean Irish: Irelands Oriental and Maritime Heritage recent studies of the Irish genome, new mitochondrial DNA analysis in the Atlantic zone from north Iberia to west Scandinavia. The Atlantean Irish is a sumptuously illustrated, exciting, intervention in Irish cultural history. Forcefully debated, and wholly persuasive, it opens up a past beyond Europe, linking Orient to Occident. What began as a personal quest-narrative becomes a category-dissolving intellectual adventure of universal significance. It is a book whose time has arrived. Lilliput Press — July 18, This book revises and expands his thesis. Bob Quinn confronts received knowledge and upends the status quo. Living in a Conamara gaeltacht sincehis adopted locale inspired him to ask two questions that impelled the saga adapted in this update Dublin: The Lilliput Press,20 euro to his work, Atlantean.
