Kitsilano Coast Guard Station (1 record)
Information provided by the donor: Image depicts primary SAR vessels. The first two larger vessels were the CCGC Ready, Rider, and or Racer, (there were three, but obviously only two in the picture, and I cannot make out the names on their sterns). They were over 90’ and patrolled the coast of BC. They are all decommissioned now. In fact, all of them are in the boat grave yard so to speak. The next three are the 104, 105, 106. They were steel-constructed, self-righting lifeboats made in 1969, powered by two large diesel engines, but only had a top speed of around 14 knots. However, they could handle any sea, (even hurricane force 1, which I was in once on Hectate strait. The seas were 20’-30’ high with breaking waves on top of that, so we had to pick a window where the sea swells were not breaking at the top, but I felt safe enough, just a little queasy). They were stationed at Port Hardy, Bamfield, and Tofino. They have all been replaced with 47’ aluminum vessels that can transit faster. The last two are the CCGC Moorhen and Mallard crash boats. They were built in the early 1950s, They were built to attend to downed planes, hence the name crash boats, but they stayed on at Kitsilano Coast Guard Station until they were replaced by the CCGC aluminum constructed vessels, the 41’ Osprey, and the 26’ Swift.

Oakalla Prison Farm
File consists of images of Oakalla Prison. The Oakalla Prison Farm was a model prison farm on 185 acres of land next to Deer Lake. The farm opened in 1912 and was initially designed to hold 150 men and 50 women. By the 1950s, the population was well over 1000. A working farm, the prison had its own dairy, vegetable gardens and livestock. Following a riot and mass escape in the late 80s, Oakalla was closed down in 1991 and was developed into a new residential housing development and an expansion of the park.
