Chairman DEMOCRATIC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF STARK COUNTY OHIO FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Daniel Ken Inouye, United States Senator from Hawaii and Senator Stephen Young of Ohio will be the featured speakers at the Annual Patrons Dinner of the Stark County Democratic Executive Committee to be held at Meyers Lake Ballroom Wednesday, October 14, 1964.

This was announced today by Paul M. Perkins, Stark County Democratic Chairman and Peter Kourmolis, 1964 Patrons Dinner Chairman.

Daniel Ken Inouye was born in Honolulu September 7, 1924 the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Hyotaro Inouye. His father was born in the Village of Yokoyama, Fukuoka Province, Japan. His Mother, Kame Inouye, was born in Puukolii, Maui, the daughter of Japanese Parents from Hiroshima.

A graduate of McKinley High School in Honolulu, Inouye headed a civil defense litter team on the morning of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

At 18, he was a pre-med student at the University of Hawaii when the oppor tunity came to volunteer in the All-Nisei 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

Inouye was a sergeant when the 442nd entered the Rome-Arno Campaign. He led a platoon in the Battle of Bruyeres in the Vosges Mountains when the 442nd relieved a Texas Battalion that had been isolated by the enemy. He received a battlefield commis sion and a bronze star medal during the campaign.

The 442nd returned to the Po Valley in Italy and Lt. Inouye led part of an assault on a hill heavily defended by crack German Infantry Units. He wiped out two machine gun crews with grenades before he was seriously wounded. The injury resulted in the loss of his right arm. He received the Distinguished Service Cross for his role in the attack and received three purple hearts during his combat career. He was re tired from active duty as a captain.

Inouye gave up his plans to be a surgeon and re-entered the University of Hawaii as a pre-law student under the GI Bill. In 1950 he met and married speech teacher Margaret Awamura, daughter of a Honolulu jeweler, who had already won a Master’s Degree at Columbia University.

The couple has a son, Daniel Ken Inouye, Jr., born July 14, 1964 in Washington, D. C.

He received his law degree at George Washington University and returned to Honolulu to become a Deputy Public Prosecutor for the City and County of Honolulu.

Inouye became a candidate for the Territorial House of Representatives in 1954 and led the ticket in his first race. He served as Majority Leader in two sessions and was elected to the Territorial Senate in the 1958 Campaign.

Statehood came to Hawaii in 1959 and Inouye was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives. He was reelected in I960, receiving the greatest vote ever accorded a political candidate in Hawaii.

In the 1962 Campaign for the U. S. Senate, he defeated Republican Candidate Ben Dillingham, by a vote of 136,294 to 60,067.

In 1959 the U. S. Junior Chamber of Commerce named him as one of the ten outstanding young men of the year.

In 1961, he was the recipient of the Alumnus of the Year Award from George Washington University.

In 1962, Inouye was chosen by Life Magazine as one of the 100 Most Important Young Men and Women in the U. S.

Senator Inouye is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Public Works Committee. He is Chairman of the Speakers' Bureau for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. A Director of the Central Pacific Bank in Honolulu, Inouye is a member or director of the Honolulu Council of Churches (He is a Methodist), The Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, Lions International, World Brotherhood, D.A.V., American Legion, V.F.W., the University of Hawaii Alumni Association, and many others.

The Patrons Dinner is an annual affair of the Stark County Democratic Executive Committee, and constitutes the one Fund-Raising Dinner of the Party each year. Tickets are $10.00 and can be obtained at Democratic Headquarters, 132 South Market Ave., Canton, Ohio.

Senator Inouye and Senator Young are close senatorial colleagues and Senator Inouye is coming to Canton from Hawaii for this affair. October 1, 1964

Dear Jack:

I am in receipt of your special delivery letter relating to the scheduled visit of FDR, Jr.

I was most distressed to learn that this was the first you had heard about it. I was under the impression that either Bob Oshiro, Bob Gilkey, Dan Aoki or Mike Tokunaga had discussed this matter with you. Incidentally, the original request for FDR, Jr. ’s participation in our campaign came from the Hawaii Johns on-Humphrey Campaign Committee headed by Bob Gilkey.

Although it is possible to cancel this engagement at this time, I would be personally reluctant to do so because it was after several hours of haggling that I finally got a commitment from the Under Secretary. I believe I should tell you that, in deciding to participate in the Hawaiian Campaign, FDR, Jr, had to cancel six rather important speaking en gagements on the West Coast.

However, if it is your wish that we cancel FDR, Jr.'s Hawaii engagement, please advise me immediately.

Aloha,

DANIEL K. INOUYE United States Senator

JOHN A. BURNS September 28, 1964 GOVERNOR

De ar Dan:

I received your special delivery letter advising me of the travel schedule for FDR, Jr. , with considerable surprise.

This is the first I had heard of any visit by Under Secretary Roosevelt. I had not been advised that we had requested a national administration speaker or an outside speaker, nor had I been advised that we had secured one.

As I informed you in discussions about a possible Presidential or Vice Presidential visit, I am quite confident that Hawaii can, and will, give to our national ticket an over whelming vote. Since this is the case, and there are places throughout this country where the President and Vice President need to go, I did not believe that we could, with any justifica tion, ask either of them to come to Hawaii.

As a matter of fact, our soft-sell campaign on behalf of the national ticket and of the Democratic Party candidates generally is most encouraging at the present time. There is general acceptance within the community that the Democrats are of the Party that is producing results for the people of Hawaii and the nation, and they should be returned to office in over whelming numbers.

There seems to me to be very good reason for believing that this attitude will continue to prevail. The interjection of anything else in the situation raises potential questions for which we have no answers at the moment.

I will turn a copy of your letter over to the Party Chairman Bob Oshiro for his action.

Warmest personal regards. May the Almighty be with you and yours always.

Sincerely,

Honorable Dan K. Inouye United States Senator Washington 25, D. C. COPY

Mr. Stephen H. Cobb

University of Wyoming University Station Laramie, Wyoming

Dear Mr. Cobb:

Thank you for your letter of September 26th. As a member of the Senatorial Campaign Committee, and primarily as Chairman of the Speakers Bureau of the Senatorial Campaign Committee and the National Campaign Committee, I am fully aware of the difficulties faced by our good and dear friend. Senator Gale McGee. We have tried our utmost and are continuing to do so to assist Gale in his campaign for reelection.

For the October 3d Convention in Casper, Wyoming, the Senatorial Campaign Committee has called upon one of the brightest young members of the United States Senate, Senator George McGovern, to participate at your State Young Democrats Convention by giving the keynote address. I am certain you will find that Senator McGovern will have a fine message for the Young Democrats of Wyoming.

As to whether or not the members of the Hawaii delegation may be able to participate in the Wyoming campaign, I am sorry to say this may not be possible. As you may know, Tom Gill is presently fighting for his political life. This weekend in Hawaii will decide whether Tom Gill will be the Democratic nominee to face Hiram Fong in the General Election. I am certain Tom will be success ful. However, I am sure you will admit that Hiram Fong is a formidable opponent. We are doing our very best to see that Hiram Fong is retired and defeated. Under these circumstances. Tom Gill will net be able to leave Hawaii to participate in the campaigns being held outside of Hawaii. Mr. Stephen H. Cobb 2- September 29, 1964 University of Wyoming

As to Spark Matsunaga, he too is having a difficult campaign and I have been advised that he plans to remain in Hawaii for the remainder of the campaign.

I am presently scheduled to return to Hawaii on October 6th to participate in the Hawaii campaign. However, all of the time thereafter will not be spent in Hawaii. My schedule requires me to return to the Mainland to fulfill several speaking engage ments in , Ohio and New Mexico during the period October 11th to the 17th.

After returning once again to Honolulu on the 17th, I plan to remain in Hawaii for the rest of the year devoting my time in Hawaii’s General Election campaign and, thereafter, to spending as much time as possible with my constituents both in Honolulu and in the Neighbor Islands. I find it most difficult, therefore, to accept your invitation to participate in the Wyoming campaign.

I have already discussed this matter at great length with Gale McGee. But may I assure you that the National Committee, The White House, and the Senatorial Campaign Committee are doing everything physically possible to send every possible assistance to help Gale McGee in his reelection campaign. This is because we love Gale and we want him back here.

Dear President Johnson: Our polls and field work indicate a complete victory in November Your presence in Ohio will do much to make certain that the advantage that we presently have is not lost between now and election day. If we had to estimate the margin of victory at this time, I would pick the figure 375,000 votes. However, on September 14, we’re not prepared to claim victory in an election approximately six weeks away. The purpose of this letter is to add one more important cog in our campaign wheel. WE NEED SENATOR PASTORE IN OHIO. There are certain pockets of resistance to which he could appeal most effectively. We are aware of the fact that he is actively campaigning for his own re-election in Rhode Island. It is our opinion that only a presidential request would cause Senator Pastore to take on this land of assignment. I do hope that you will see fit to urge him to come. PERSONAL

Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson The White House Washington, D. C.

My dear Mrs. Johnson:

I have just been advised by the White House and the Democratic National Committee that the extremely heavy schedules of President Johnson and of our vice presidential candidate, Senator Humphrey, will not permit their participation in the election cam paign in the State of Hawaii.

I presume that this decision was based on reliable polls and indicators which show dramatically that Hawaii may possibly lead the Nation in supporting the candidacies of President Johnson and Senator Humphrey. We expect Hawaii to carry the ticket by a minimum of 65 per cent. Under these circumstances, it would seem that the decision to bypass Hawaii is a reasonable one. However, I deeply believe that there are other circumstances which justify the participation of a great and outstanding Democrat in Hawaii's election campaign.

We are presently faced with a very crucial election involving the Senate seat and two Congressional seats. Therefore, I am most respectfully calling upon you to favor us with your presence in Hawaii during the General Election campaign. I am fully aware that your schedule has been a most exhausting one, and I join the millions of Americans and Democrats in thanking you for your dedication to our national cause. There is no question that you are a star attraction in every village, city and borough of our United States, Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson September 16, 1964 The White House page 2

Mrs. Johnson, we need you in Hawaii and we hope that the First Family of our Nation will favor us with your presence in Hawaii. I feel most certain that your participation in our campaign, whether it be by one speech or by a day’s journey through our villages, will make the difference between victory and defeat for our Congressional candidates. All of our candidates are not only dedicated to President Johnson's program, but they have shown in their voting records and in their utterances that they are fully committed and dedicated to our great President. Please favor us with your presence.

Dear Dan:

On October 25th, the good Democrats of Ocean County, New Jersey, are holding their annual fund raising dinner, and I want very much to help them make it a successful occasion.

The Ocean County Dems are doing a line job in the campaign. Unfortunately, however, they have suffered from several difficult, but nonetheless unavoidable, situations in which their fellow New Jersey Democrats haven't been able to give them the support they deserve. The October 25th event, which is expected to draw 400 guests, is their most important event of the year, and they want, and badly need, a speaker of the highest caliber.

I wonder, therefore, whether the Campaign Speakers Bureau can arrange for a prominate Washington official, per haps a Senator, to speak to them.

Anything you can do to help us will be deeply appreciated, Dan, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best wishes.

The following requests have come up for Pennsylvania which I very much need your help on. These are all Democratic County fund raising dinners for which we will need speakers to attract a crowd, and if we cannot get the ones they specifically want it will be necessary to obtain substitutes: (1) Bucks and Chester Counties want Birch Bayh for Saturday, October 17. These counties are near each other, they are both bedroom counties of Philadelphia, and he could do both on the same night.

(2) Lycoming County — the dinner would be inn Williamsport, Pennsylvania which can be reached by Allegheny Airlines -- wants Secretary Udall on October 17.

(3) Payette County which is in Congressman Morgan's district in southwestern Pennsylvania wants Pierre Salinger for October 21. This will be a very big dinner with a couple thousand people.

(4) Huntingdon County which is in south-central Pennsylvania is very anxious to have Sargent Shriver for their dinner on October 23.

(5) Erie County which as you know, is the extreme northwest, of the State wants Bob Weaver for October 8.

I will go after Weaver, Udall, and Shriver directly but I give you the dates in the event I can't get them. Needless to say, I will very much appreciate anything you can do for me on these engagements.

Dear Senator:

The California Johnson-Humphrey Campaign will schedule visiting dignitaries in the state, arranging appearances and press coverage.

We are anxious to provide maximum service for members of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and believe we can best do this by scheduling individual Senators in California when their plans permit them to visit, instead of by requesting specific dates. We would appreciate knowing which Senators might be available and when.

Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Gatov will direct scheduling in Northern California, working from headquarters at 45 Second Street, San Francisco, SUtter 1-1700. Charles Bosley will direct arrangements in Southern California from head quarters at 1212 Wilshire Boulevard, , HUntley 1-2930.

I am sorry I have been so slow getting back to you. One of the reasons is that I have been in touch with Senator Inouye on my out-of-state speaking engagements. I have offered to go to Hawaii and it has thus far not been worked out. Anything you can work out with Senator Inouye is fine with ma.

With best regards.

Sincerely,

Pierre Salinger

Dear Senator Inouye:

You have recently received a letter explaining the role of Young Citizens for Johnson in the current campaign and requesting your assistance by speaking at large YCJ rallies. In order to simplify your response, we are enclosing a reply card for your considerations.

Again, your assistance will be invaluable to our campaign effort. We need your help in carrying the President's message to the young people of America.

Our thanks for your help.

Mr. Walter H. Moeller Moeller for Congress Headquarters

Lancaster, Ohio

Dear Walter:

Exactly a week ago, Maggie and I became the parents of a son. Our cup of joy runneth over.

I shall immediately touch bases with Chuck Lipsen to discuss your financial problem with him. Furthermore, I shall com municate with "Mim" Daddario, Chairman of the Speakers Bureau in the House, to seek his assistance in acquiring a speaker for your OxRoast in Lancaster.

May I strongly suggest that you personally communicate with Congressman Emilio Q. Daddario for his assistance. He has been appointed Chairman of the Speakers Bureau of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. I shall work with him to select a suitable speaker.

In order to do a good job, may I request the following information:

1) Approximate size of the crowd.

2) The purpose of the meeting: political, social, union gathering, etc. etc.

3) The ethnic and social make-up of the audience, in other words, is this a meeting of Poles, trade-unionists, Methodists, etc. etc.

4) Exact time and place of the gathering. July 21, 1964 Lancaster, Ohio Page 2

5) The name of your contact man for this activity. I should point out to you that, according to the policy of the Senate and the House Committe s, the candidate will be required to pay for the cost of the transportation for a maximum of two persons (just in case the speaker desires to take along his wife or his assistant); the cost of the hotel ac commodations and meals; an expense account of $50.00.

6) The type of speaker desired. It is suggested that you list down specific names in the order of your preference.

7) The type of speech desired. For example, if you wish to have the speaker discuss medicare, war on poverty, foreign relations, etc.

Your assistance in furnishing me the above information will aid us in the selection of a suitable speaker. May I hear from you.

Aloha,

Dear Dan:

We think of you and Maggie often. Last evening in Dr. Crewson’s home in Athens we met his daughter, who is a student at the Univ ersity of Hawaii. After hearing her talk I think everyone there must respect you as much as we do. From her remarks they are waiting to give the big salute when the little one arrives. I have a feeling that Maggie might not think it so little about now!

Dan, now to a little business that is on my mind. Tn looking over the list of candidates running here in Ohio, this seat surely has the best prospects of winning. As a state, Ohio, is in a state of disorganized confusion. Financially, our campaign is in a bad way. I resigned my job, so you can see what I mean. I contacted most of the Unions in this area, but if you could apply a little pres sure or mention my campaign in your contacts there, we shall be forever grateful.

I am reminded that you are a friend of Chuck Lipson of the Retail Clerk's Union. I asked Chuck before I left Washington to get his group behind me. He suggested I write to Mr. Dunlap in Cleveland, which I did. So far I haven’t even heard from him. I would be grateful if you would give Chuck a call in regards to some support for me. Now the big item; I need a speaker for our OxRoast here in Lan caster. The date is Thursday, August 6. Can you be of any help on this?

I'll need a prompt reply to get plans organized for a successful event. Respectfully yours,

Walter H. Moeller

Dear Mr. Bridger:

Your letter of September 14th addressed to our Majority Leader , Senator Mansfield, has been referred to the Speakers Bureau of the National Democratic Party for appropriate action.

We note that an invitation has been extended to Senator Humphrey to participate in your Eastern Montana College Homecoming Parade and for him to speak at the college on October 16th.

After conferring with Senator Humphrey about your request, I have been asked by him to convey to you his deep regrets. Senator Humphrey’s speaking schedule for the month of October has been fully finalized and it appears quite impos sible at this date to make any changes. Senator Humphrey tried everything possible to see whether or not some adjust ment could be made in his schedule to comply with your request but was unsuccessful. I am very sorry we were not able to help you.

Very sincerely yours,

Thank you for your note of September 19th advising me that Mr. J. A. Bridger, Chairman of the Parade Committee, Eastern Montana College Homecoming, has invited Senator Humphrey to participate in the Parade on October 17th and also to speak at the College on October 16th.

Although I strongly doubt that Senator Humphrey will be available for these functions, I will submit a request through the National Committee for Senator Humphrey's parade talents.

Dear Dan:

I have received a letter from Mr. J. A. Bridger, Chairman, Parade Committee, Eastern Montana College Homecoming, Billings, Montana, advising that he has invited Senator Humphrey to be in the Homecoming Parade on October 17th at 8:45 a. m. , and also to speak at the College on October 16th at 2:00 p. m.

I do not know whether Mr. Bridger has contacted the State Central Committee concerning this matter, however, I have advised him to do so. I would appreciate any consideration which can be given to this request by the office coordinating these activities.

Thanking you for your courtesy in this matter and with best personal wishes, I am

Sincerely yours Honorable Mike Mansfield United States Senate Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Leader:

I am in receipt of a copy of your letter dated September 18th and addressed to Mr. J. A. Bridger, Chairman of the Parade Committee of the Eastern Montana College Homecoming.

I would assume from this letter that you wish to have the Speakers Bureau of the Senatorial Campaign Committee assign a Senator to participate in the activities of this Homecoming on October 16th and 17th.

As I indicated to you last week, as Chairman of the Speakers Bureau, I have been most reluctant to comply with similar requests for senatorial speakers because of the uncertainty of our legislative schedule. However, if it is your desire that we tentatively assign some Senator for this affair, I shall be happy to look into this matter with all seriousness.

Dear Mr. Bridger:

Your good letter of the 14th was on ray desk on ray return to Washington this morning, and I want to thank you for your very kind invitation to take part in the activities at Eastern Montana College's Homecoming, October 16th and 17th.

I wish it were possible for me to comply with your request. However, as you know, the Senate is still in session, and in view of the legislative schedule, it is not possible for me to make any commitments for the next few weeks. I do hope to get out to the State again, as soon as possible, but because of the schedule back here, I have not been able to make any kind of definite commitments.

With respect to your invitation to Senator Humphrey, it would be ray suggestion, if you have not already done so, that you contact the Montana State Democratic Central Committee in Helena, as all speakers' engagements are being coordinated through the State committees. I will also see that your request is brought to the attention of the appropriate officials back here for consideration.

Must close now, but again thanking you for your good letter, and with best personal wishes, I am
