Pop sonnets call me maybe

Continue I think I can safely say that this is the first book I've ever reviewed where I had to make a playlist in advance. That's right, Pop Sonnets, a project that gained fame on Tumblr, is now printed with a canon of 100 strong sonnets. How to prepare: Add a pop song. Steep in Shakespearean verse (allergy advice: contains imambic pentâmeter). Once manufactured take off immediately. It sounds simple, perhaps, but the results are spectacular. Of course Didriksen had a great time writing these sonnets, and the joke is the order of the day. I would gladly recommend reading a sonnet while listening to the music that inspired it, or listening and then reading. It's fit for the ultimate value of comedy, you'll be laughing out loud with your ripped asses while Carly Rae Jepson sings about ripped jeans when Call Me Maybe gets the pop-sonnet treatment. I must warn you though, with 100 sonnets long, listening along means that your first reading will pass will mark in about 7 hours in a straight session. But maybe you're familiar with all the songs already, in that case, smarty-pants, you'll probably get all the jokes right away. Didriksen demonstrates the affinity of poetry and pop songs through his witty Shakespearean interpretations of old and new songs. Maybe you do not tire at the top of your lungs Should compare it with a summer day ... in the shower, but how about Beyoncé's bachelorettes? All together now, a two three' If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it. If you really wanted to win my hand, you should have graced a wedding ring. From to Tom Jones, many of our favorite songs receive Shakespearean covers. Playing with Sonnet 130, Didriksen's version of 's Just the Way You Are is particularly bright, his mistress's eyes are nothing like the sun, but, as with the speaker in Sonnet 130, the speaker of this sonnet loves his mistress 'Just the way you are'. Sonnets are subdivided into 5 useful categories. If you need a sonnet to articulate feelings of despair that it comes to contaminated love, or one about having one less problem, you know the letter: we must separate ourselves, the problems quickly subtracted from my heart. Or maybe you want to cry 'three cheers for the well rounded derriere' (because you can't lie), that's right, Baby Got Back also appears in the collection. But I'm not going to give it all away; I'll save that joy for when you have your hands on a copy. It fills a nerd gap that no one had considered, but boy, I'm glad Didriksen found the niche. With erudite wit and humor in equal measure, Didriksen captures Shakespeare's voice and pop songs and brings them together in happy harmony. Shakespeare is fun, and Pop Sonnets shows it This title is released in the U.S. and Canada on October 6 on October 8 elsewhere. P.s. I wasn't kidding about making a playlist if you'd like to listen along with 'Pop Sonnets' just click here. (Please note that due to Spotify restrictions, this playlist does not contain Taylor Swift's music featured in the book). William Shakespeare is considered the greatest writer in the world - he was a brilliant playwright, but his genius really shines in his glorious sonnets and poems. Although Shakespeare wrote plays for a living, he wrote poetry to nourish his soul - his art. Four centuries after they were published, sonnets remain the most widely read and recited poems in all English literature. Stop and think for a moment: if Shakespeare were alive today, would he also be writing pop songs? Would we be singing Shakespearean pop songs? Why not? Meet Erik Didriksen, a 27-year-old software developer and poet by night, who was inspired to reinterpret pop songs in the form of Shakespearean sonnets (14 lines in iambic pentâmeter) using authentic Shakespearean dialect. His epiphany occurred when he came across Simon Fletcher's sonnet version of the rap song Thrift Shop written by American rapper Macklemore. It was one of the funniest things I've read, Didriksen said. His first poem was a sonnet version of 's Call Me Maybe. Didriksen created a blog, popsonnet, where he could post a new song every week. Didriksen dives into the Bard's wordsmithing arsenal - using clever puns, words, rhymes and melancholy couplings - to create devilishly entertaining pop sonnets. In October, Didriksen published a collection of his best songs, titled Pop Shakespeare, with the Swan of Avon swinging in a laúde on the cover. It catches your eye immediately, since you never see images of the Bard having fun (the best-known portrait, an engraving by Martin Droeshout, shows a very gloomy Shakespeare as if his head had been cut by a heavily plastered frill). Below are two of Didriksen's delicious pop sonnets that will make you smile and beat your feet. Sonnet XXIV (Bohemian Rhapsody's interpretation of Queen) Is this the awake world, or do I sleep? I guess I can't be awakened, to my dismay, but I can't but you shouldn't for this delinquent crying because I'm gross whose soul was thrown away. O sweet mother, I bring you news of dread - my life is at an end, for I have another dead; I pressed my beast against his head I turned the screw off to his brain. — but hark! I see a dark, ghostly shape in the midst of lightning by Jove aloft! The cries of mercy, silenced by the storm, are futile; I won't be released, but I will die. My fate has now sealed,'tis clear for all to see: the direction of the wind does not matter to me. Sonnet LXXIX (portrayal of Billie Jean by Michael Jackson) The memory of her face will persist for a long time, as she could be the Queen of Beauty crown, but I will remember more how she would insist that I was the only one who danced within the round. The scene she caused made people turn their heads as her name and slander gave: it caught the attention advice I once heard say to act cautiously hearts of young rounds. My mother, too, had shared deep disgust that lies can be seen quickly as gospel truth, and then I swear: she is ne'er my lover was, and I am not the father of this youth. No act of carnel among us occurred; therefore the boy is not a son that I have sir. Read related posts: Were Shakespeare's sonnets written for a young man? When was Shakespeare born?
