MUS 2008 Critical Perspectives on Contemporary Music Instructor: Peter Johnston Album Review Assignment Length: 800-1000 words (2-3 pages) Format: double-spaced, no extra line between paragraphs, size 12 font, 1” margins Submission: online through Blackboard, PDF or MS Word ﬁles only Late penalty: 10% per day late, counted from 11:59 pm each day Assignment Details: The purpose of this assignment is to comparatively examine the criteria used by two different music reviewers to judge the merits of an album. It is expected that you will use terms and concepts from the course content to frame your analysis. Please refer to the example reviews on Blackboard. This short essay must include the following: (1) References to two contrasting reviews of an album of your choice, meaning one that reviews the album positively and another that offers a negative reading of the album’s merits. The album can be from any popular music genre, but must have been made in the last ten years. These reviews should come from published music critics (from newspapers, magazines, industry websites like pitchfork.com, allmusic.com or billboard.com, etc.) but not fans’ websites, blogs, amazon.com comments, or the like. ABSTRACT CEREMONIALS: A RECLAMATION OF THE WITCH THROUGH DEVISED RITUAL THEATRE by Rachel Lynn Brandenburg Rituals have been used throughout history as a way to process change and emotion. In the modern day, people are beginning to turn away from organized religion and to take on more personalized rituals and spirituality. As such, identifying as a witch is a growing phenomenon that serves to empower many personally, politically, and spiritually. This creative thesis takes an autobiographical approach to explore how ritual and the identity of the witch can be used as tools of empowerment, tracing the artist’s own journey from Catholicism to a more fluid spiritual life. On February 22nd, 2019, Ceremonials: A Ritual Play opened as part of Miami University’s Independent Artist Series. The play was devised with a student ensemble over a period of five months and stands as the culmination of a series of performance projects that sought to combine ritual and theatre. This portfolio spans the breadth of that practice-based research and includes examples from performance experiments and the devising process, as well as reflections on how ritual and devised theatre can help to empower the individual and the artist. The intent is to lift up the prayers by viewing them through a new lens, and perhaps gain new insight into beloved, contemporary songs, whether familiar or new to us. “Both Sides Now” speaks to several relevant themes in our service and in our hearts: • This week’s Torah portion, B’Shallah, begins with our Israeilite ancestors in slavery, on one side of the Sea of Reeds and ends with them as a newly freed people on the other side.
