    The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Anne Levitsky All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky This dissertation explores the relationship of the act of singing to being a human in the lyric poetry of the troubadours, traveling poet-musicians who frequented the courts of contemporary southern France in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. In my dissertation, I demonstrate that the troubadours surpass traditionally-held perceptions of their corpus as one entirely engaged with themes of courtly romance and society, and argue that their lyric poetry instead both displays the influence of philosophical conceptions of sound, and critiques notions of personhood and sexuality privileged by grammarians, philosophers, and theologians. I examine a poetic device within troubadour songs that I term ‘personified song’—an occurrence in the lyric tradition where a performer turns toward the song he/she is about to finish singing and directly addresses it. This act lends the song the human capabilities of speech, motion, and agency. It is through the lens of the ‘personified song’ that I analyze this understudied facet of troubadour song. Chapter One argues that the location of personification in the poetic text interacts with the song’s melodic structure to affect the type of personification the song undergoes, while exploring the ways in which singing facilitates the creation of a body for the song.

The authors present here an exploratory and unspecific method that does not necessitate any a priori on the data – or any heavy trans- formation such as lemmatisation– that would have to be understood as a first step in the apprehension of a corpus. After a first phase of calibra- tion, based on a control sample, the authors will introduce a method which heuristic value is to bring out, at different levels, internal divisions of dif- ferent kinds (diachronic, diatopic, related to authorship or scribes,. ), that can then be analysed specifically. The authors illustrate this method by applying it to a corpus of Occitan medieval texts, the vidas. The cor- pus’s authors and origins are in good part unknown. 1 A peculiar corpus: the vidas 1.1 Elements of context Amongst the relatively small corpus of Occitan prose literature from the XIIIth century that has survived to this day, the vidas, along with the razos, constitute a corpus of roughly 225 texts known as the “biographies” of the troubadours since Raynouard’s edition in 1820. Several debates surround these texts’ origin: were they performed at first or were they created specifically to be integrated into manuscripts? Did they appear in Northern Italy or do they come from an older Languedocian tradition? Despite the lack of medieval unambiguous vocabulary, there is an apparent distinction between commentaries, explanation of a specific poem (a razo), and more general biographical narratives detached from a specific work (vidas as we call them).

Une étude sur les planhs en langue d’oc des XII e et XIII e siècles Le planh est un genre de la poésie lyrique des troubadours qui se présente comme un chant de deuil pour la mort de la femme aimée ou d’un personnage important de la société courtoise. Il présente des caractéristiques formelles, rhétoriques et stylistiques bien déterminées, qui seront analysées au cours de ce travail, lequel se propose d’apporter quelques observations nouvelles sur un genre littéraire qui n’a pas suscité beaucoup d’intérêt dans les dernières années. En effet, plusieurs sous-genres lyriques occitans ont été étudiés de façon approfondie au cours de ces années, mais pas celui-ci. Dans les pages consacrées aux planhs de La poésie lyrique des troubadours , Alfred Jeanroy repère trente-quatre textes écrits « sur la mort d’un grand personnage (ordinairement protecteur ou protectrice de l’auteur) », cinq « sur la mort d’un ami ou parent », et trois « sur la mort de la dame de l’auteur »1. L’étude conduite par Maria Ida Opocher Cevese a porté à quarante-six le nombre des planhs stricto sensu 2. Notre analyse nous a conduit à éliminer de ce compte le planh anonyme élaboré probablement par une femme Ab lo cor trist, environat d’esmay , car il est sans aucun doute catalan, de même que le planctus Mariae anonyme De gran dolor cruzel ab mortal pena 3 et les deux textes du XIVe siècle insérés dans toutes les listes de planhs précédentes, c’est- à-dire Aras quan vey de bos homes fraytura de Raimon de Cornet pour la mort d’Amanieu VII d’Albret (1324) et l’anonyme Glorios Dieus, don totz bens ha creysensa qui célèbre le défunt roi Robert d’Anjou (1343) 4.

Duggan Professor Frank Bezner Fall 2013 1 Abstract Sermo absentium : Rhetoric, Epistolarity, and the Emergence of Italian Literary Culture by Scott Sims Millspaugh Doctor of Philosophy in Italian Studies and Medieval Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Steven Botterill, Chair The goal of this dissertation is to propose a theory for the emergence of Italian literary culture in the Duecento , with particular reference to the lyric production of Giacomo da Lentini and Guittone d’Arezzo, as well as to the Dantean literary history of Purgatorio XXIV and XXVI. ‘Le origini’, the label long preferred by Italian literary criticism to describe the period between 1230 and 1300, presupposes a coherent national narrative framed, on one side, by an irrepressible vernacular spirit that defies political fragmentation and, on the other, by Italy’s hard-won unification in the nineteenth century. Though Italian studies has done much to undermine this fiction for all periods of Italian literature, significant gaps in scholarship remain for the Duecento .

Stephen Jaeger, Chair Associate Professor Karen Fresco Associate Professor Richard Layton Professor Keith Busby, University of Wisconsin-Madison ABSTRACT This dissertation compares the works of select troubadours with three mystical tracts in order to present the similarities found in these two literary traditions. Mystical writings have a far longer history reaching into antiquity and continuing until the present day. The traces in the manuscript traditions situate in the late eleventh century a new poetic form in Occitan with a focus on earthly love. The love as it is described in the songs of the composers who write or sing about it comes to be called bon amors or fin’ amors, the term we use today to name the love of the troubadour tradition. The period of lyrical production in Occitan by troubadours speaking of fin’ amors does not endure more than three centuries if we begin our count with Guilhem IX (1071-1126) and close with the poet so often called the last of the troubadours, Guiraut Riquier (1254-1292). These two traditions of love literature are thus distinguished by the nature of their literary histories and also by the loves they describe.
