2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT A COMMITMENT TO OUR MISSION

Education Through Music- (ETM-LA) provides and promotes music education in disadvantaged schools as a part of the core curriculum to enhance students’ academic achievement, creativity, and overall development.

2017-2018 Annual Report | 2 IN-SCHOOL MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS

ETM-LA provides each partner school with weekly music classes on a yearlong basis. These classes provide a variety of musical disciplines including violin, , ukulele, guitar, recorder, general music, music technology and chorus. Each school’s program is tailored to meet the needs of their specific population based on the vision of the principal with guidance from an ETM-LA supervisor or mentor. In the 2017-2018 school year, students at all partner schools performed in concerts to showcase their musical learning in the fall and spring semesters.

In 2017-18, Education Through Music-Los Angeles expanded our reach across Los Angeles County to provide approximately 13,000 students in 29 low-income area schools with top-notch music education. Each partner school received sequential, comprehensive weekly music classes on a yearlong basis which included such musical disciplines as violin, viola, cello, ukulele, guitar, recorder, general music, band, music technology, songwriting, and chorus. 2017-2018 Annual Report | 3 O U R P A R T N E R S C H O O L S

Our reach encompassed five school districts: Burbank, Compton, Inglewood, Los Angeles, and Pasadena Unified. On-site support, curriculum development, professional development, parent workshops, and ongoing guidance from Multiple sstaff members including the Executive Director, Program Directors, Music Educators, and Mentor Teacher Supervisors were key components implemented to ensure continued growth and excellence. 100% of our partner schools in 2017-18 were Title 1 schools which on average served a population in which 81.5% of the students were on the Free or Reduced Price Lunch Program. Furthermore, ETM-LA provided support services to 3 additional schools utilizing the ETM model: Emerson Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, and West Elementary. 13,000 29 students schools Aldama Elementary ICEF VISTA Academy Altadena Elementary Ingenium Charter School Aspire Junior Academy Kelso Elementary Aspire Titan Academy McKinley Elementary (Burbank) Bursch Elementary McKinley Elementary (Compton) Castelar Elementary Nora Sterry Elementary Ingenium Clemente Normandie Avenue Elementary Charter Fishburn Norwood Street Elementary Cleveland Elementary Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Dolores Mission School Providencia Elementary Dorris Place Elementary Resurrection School El Dorado Avenue Elementary Rio Vista Elementary Foster Elementary Saint Michael’s School Guardian Angel School Washington Elementary Hooper Elementary Worthington Elementary 2017-2018 Annual Report | 4 A LETTER ON LEADERSHIP TIME TO LISTEN With cobblestone-paved streets stretched as far as the eye could see, Victoria Lanier bordered by a tranquil lake perfectly situated beyond a lined row of Executive Director ancient trees, the global leadership retreat I attended this summer in Berlin became an oasis of deep connection, reflection, and listening. Along with 79 other leaders from 22 countries representing a wide scope of fields, I spent five intensive days immersed in the exploration of creating change.

I had been invited to participate along with seven other arts leaders from California to continue our ongoing work of the Arts Innovation Lab through the LA County Arts Ed Collective, which is focused on building equity and access for all Los Angeles County students to receive quality arts instruction.

Having devoted the majority of my adult life to this charge through the work of Education Through Music-Los Angeles, I am hopeful for the Photo: Danny Moloshok future on the horizon.

One salient message which resonated through the retreat was that if we are to affect change, we must be willing to “turn the telescope” around on ourselves - individually and societally - to actively listen. So often, as we seek new innovations and solutions, we tend to look “forward” and “outwardly.” But only through personal reflection of who we are in relationship to others will we be given a more profound perspective on our situation, and given a better direction on how to move forward thoughtfully, carefully, and respectfully through the ecosystem in which we find ourselves.

As a musician and music educator, I liken this to playing music in an ensemble. One must constantly be listening and reflecting on what he or she is doing while concurrently being aware of and actively listening to other musicians; one must open his or her ears, heart, and mind to the others in the group. Despite differences among musicians in backgrounds, beliefs, education, or personalities, music (and all the arts) can teach us how to listen to those around us.

In turn, such listening through music can teach young children and adults alike to move from a “me” to “we” mentality and can bring about unity and acceptance in unexpected ways. It is with this kind of relational approach that Education Through Music-LA seeks to uplift our school partners, districts, and communities in order to truly meet the diverse needs of our stakeholders. We ensure that we are tuned into the struggles and challenges that our schools, parents, and children face so we can be adept in our response. When we are in concert with our stakeholders and with those whom we serve, will we be able to better outcomes in rhythm with our constituents.

So, it is time to listen. Always, it is time to listen.

During the retreat, I found that being surrounded by “openness” helped to encapsulate how we must listen in relation to others - especially where new thoughts and ideas exist - if we are truly going to create positive change.

I am both hopeful and anxious for the future. I am hopeful when I witness music’s awesome power in developing the careful and responsive listening we all need. And to the extent that leaders are willing to listen openly with humility, can we truly begin to create equity and access for all. - Victoria Lanier, ETM-LA Executive Director 2017-2018 Annual Report | 5 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

DEVELOPING QUALITY MUSIC EDUCATORS

Rigorous professional development and continued training are paramount to the success of the music education programs. Over 100 hours of professional development and training were provided to each ETM-LA music teacher to improve instruction and student outcomes. This included our quarterly trainings and site visits and intensive Summer Training Institute August 16-17 / 21-25, 2018 for new/ returning music teachers and guest artists from other arts organizations.

ETM-LA provided deeper opportunities for music teachers to receive certifications in pedagogical areas including Kodály, Orff, and Suzuki. Our annual Principals Leadership Institute was held on January 25, 2018 with a focus on building sustainability.

In addition, ETM-LA offered workshops to both classroom teachers and parents on: • Building vocabulary, expression, joy, and teamwork through music. • The value of teaching music inside and outside the academic classroom. • How to make connections across the curriculum and reinforce skills and content through musical instruction.

2017-2018 Annual Report | 6 Music class makes me feel like I’m one of a kind and special. What I love about music is that it is inspiring and helps me “ to express personal feelings and to better relate socially with people. Now that I learn music in school, I am able to make more friends. Thank you for givingme music and new experiences. Joshua, 4th Grade “
