Popular Selection List 2019 Edition PopularPopular SelectionSelection ListList 20192019 EditionEdition ANAN ADDENDUMADDENDUM TO TO THE THE PIANO PIANO SYLLABUS SYLLABUS 2015 EDITIONEDITION Preface The Popular Selection List, 2019 Edition is an addendum to The Royal Conservatory Piano Syllabus, 2015 Edition which embodies the official requirements for the piano examinations conducted by the RCM Certificate Program. The Popular Selection List is a compilation of non-classical pieces, carefully selected to suit each level. Students in Levels 1 to 9 have the option of substituting a piece chosen from the Popular Selection List for one etude in their level. Students should consult the Piano Syllabus, 2015 Edition for detailed information on substitution policies. Students do not need prior approval from the Certificate Program to use a piece from the Popular Selection List as a substitute for one of the etudes from the same level. Each piece has musical value, containing rhythmic or technical challenges pertinent to the level for which it has been selected. The required edition for each selection is clearly identified. These editions have been chosen to ensure that students prepare the appropriate arrangement at each level. Please consult the Bibliography on p. 28 for more information on the collections and sheet music referenced in the Popular Selection List. Da Capo, Dal Segno Signs, and Repeats • When performing repertoire in an examination, students should observe Da Capo and Dal Segno signs, unless stated otherwise in the Popular Selection List, 2019 Edition. • Repeat signs should generally be omitted. However, repeat signs should be observed only if indicated in the Popular Selection List, 2019 Edition. ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SELECTED WORKS OF COMPOSERS ASSOCIATED WITH HOWARD UNIVERSITY Guericke Christopher Royal, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Chris Gekker School of Music Throughout its over 100 year history, Howard University has produced and attracted many talented composers of many musical genres. Limiting this project to any one genre or focus would have lessened the overall impact of the music they created and the inspiration that has been a lauded part of the institution. The project will demonstrate the various harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and emotional contributions of the selected composers through interpretation of their music on the trumpet. Composers have been connected to the university in three general ways: as students, alumni and faculty; as commissioned artists; and through the performance of their works by notable performers associated with Howard. The pieces selected for this project exemplify a wide range of musical expressions and compositional techniques, and hopefully have been presented in a way that allows the emotional impact of each piece to resonate in a unique fashion. The selected works tended to fall into the categories of A. Trumpet and Brass Works B. Spirituals/ Meditational/ Religious Works C. Popular and Jazz Pieces D. Organ or other Instrumental Works E. Works of Historical Reference or Significance In some cases, certain pieces may be categorized across multiple categories (e.g. an organ piece based on religious material). As this was also a recording project, great care was taken during the recording process to capture as much emotional content as possible through stereo microphone techniques and the use of high quality equipment.

  • Interview with Asa Taccone from Electric Guest
Interview with Asa Taccone from Electric Guest By artistically fusing both vintage and contemporary aesthetics, Los Angeles indie soul act Electric Guest brings a unique groove. Frontman Asa Taccone has a velvety and soulful voice that reaches different levels of vocal range while Matthew “Cornbread” Compton creates electronically fueled beats and rhythms. It’s a melding of Motown swagger with modern pop and an abundance of substance. While a lot of their contemporaries seem to lack something, Taccone and Compton convey sounds that come complete in full force. It’s what makes this duo one of the top up-and-coming music groups of the 2010s. With Brooklyn indie pop wonders Chaos Chaos opening things up, Electric Guest will take the upstairs stage at the Columbus Theatre in Providence’s west end on March 4. Before the show I had a chat with Taccone about the band’s latest album, Plural, the songwriting partnership he has with Compton, growing tired of hip-hop, being a former writer for “Saturday Night Live” and what we can expect from Electric Guest for the rest of the year. Rob Duguay: Electric Guest are Plural on February 17. It’s the follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed debut, Mondo, that came out in 2012. Did you feel any pressure while making the new album in the studio and what did you do differently with Plural versus what you did with Mondo? Asa Taccone: There was definitely pressure. It was part of the reason why it took so damn long for Plural to come out.

Hap, hap, happy days for songwriter Charles Fox By Paul Freeman For The Daily News Posted: 01/05/2012 12:07:51 AM PST Updated: 01/05/2012 12:07:51 AM PST It should come as no surprise that Charles Fox recently received recognition from the Smithsonian Institute. The award- winning composer is, himself, an American institution, having penned such pop classics as "Killing Me Softly," "Ready To Take A Chance Again" and "I Got A Name," such iconic TV themes as "Happy Days," "Laverne and Shirley" and "The Love Boat," and scores for many films. Fox's success is the result not only of rare talent, but of dedication to his craft. "You never know what the public is going to reach for," he said. "But I do know if I've written a good song and I do know if there's something unique about it. You just have to know, as a songwriter, when you've written something that's special, that says what you want to say. Until then, I'm not satisfied. You keep working on it, honing away.

Biography Mark Ronson is an internationally renowned DJ and five-time-Grammy-Award-winning and Golden Globe-winning artist and producer. Ronson spent the first eight years of his life growing up in London, England. Having played guitar and drums from an early age, it wasn't until moving to New York City following his parents’ divorce, that he discovered DJ culture. At age 16, and already a fan of artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, Ronson began listening to mixtapes released by various hip hop DJs. Inspired, Ronson confiscated his step-father's vinyl collection and tried his hand at mixing. It was the first step in a career highlighted by work on a multi Grammy-winning album by Amy Winehouse, as well as his own Grammy-winning, global smash hit with Bruno Mars, "Uptown Funk." In the late 1990s into the early 2000s, the New York club scene was percolating with booming hip-hop and glitzy R&B. Ronson quickly earned himself a reputation through stints on the decks in downtown clubs before becoming the DJ of choice for many noteworthy parties. Hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs hired Ronson to DJ his fabled 29th birthday bash. These and other high-profile gigs boosted Ronson's profile and connected him with other artists, many of whom were interested in collaborating. His first production gig came from British soul singer Nikka Costa and he found that his experience of working a club crowd informed his production skills. Fusing his eclectic turntable skills with his knowledge of musical instruments and songwriting, Ronson soon embarked on his first solo record.

POPS FOUR We Have Liftoff! The Rocket City in Space SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 2020 • 7:30 p.m. • MARK C. SMITH CONCERT HALL, VON BRAUN CENTER Huntsville Symphony Orchestra • C. DAVID RAGSDALE, Guest Conductor • GREGORY VAJDA, Music Director One of the nation’s major aerospace hubs, Huntsville—the “Rocket City”—has been heavily invested in the industry since Operation Paperclip brought more than 1,600 German scientists to the United States between 1945 and 1959. The Army Ballistic Missile Agency arrived at Redstone Arsenal in 1956, and Eisenhower opened NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in 1960 with Dr. Wernher von Braun as Director. The Redstone and Saturn rockets, the “Moon Buggy” (Lunar Roving Vehicle), Skylab, the Space Shuttle Program, and the Hubble Space Telescope are just a few of the many projects led or assisted by Huntsville. Tonight’s concert celebrates our community’s vital contributions to rocketry and space exploration, at the most opportune of celestial conjunctions: July 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon-landing mission, and 2020 brings the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, America’s leading aerospace museum and Alabama’s largest tourist attraction.
