The reconstruction of its kinematics, age and state of activity is presented, through a detailed description of its morphological, geomechanical and structural features. An inte- grated multi-disciplinary approach was performed to achieve a clear comprehension of the phenomenon. Field surveys and aero-photo interpretation were carried out in order to clarify the structural, geological and geomorphological setting in which the DSGSD developed. A kinematic conceptual model of the slope deformation was developed through the analysis of morpho- structures, of their signi®cance and relationships with lithological markers and Quaternary deposits. After a geomechanical characterisation of the rock mass involved in the slope deformation, numerical modelling was performed to verify the hypotheses made on kinematics and driving factors of the phenomenon. The sackung affects pre-Permian metapelites, meta- basites and marbles belonging to the Upper Austroalpine basement of the Campo Nappe, as well as Late Pleistocene and Holocene glacial and rock glacier deposits. The deformation started after the Late-Wurmian age (15,000±11,000 years B.P.), and continued until few centuries ago, not excluding a present-day low-rate activity.

  • I Velari Medievali Dipinti in Valtellina. Lettura E Confronto
PORTICVM. REVISTA D’ESTUDIS MEDIEVALS NÚMERO IV. ANY 2012 ISSN: 2014-0932 I velari medievali dipinti in Valtellina. Abstract: The fictive ornamental curtains are depicted in many medieval churches in Lombardia. In Valtellina (Province of Sondrio) there are four drapes with interesting iconographic and typological elements, similar to curtains preserved in the Province of Varese and Como (XI- XII). In Postalesio, at Saint Colombano’s church, a velum with a cycle of the Months decorates the base of the apse, in relation with calendars of: Gornate Superiore, Jerago, Gattedo, Piona, Borgomanero, Pallanza. A drape depicted with stars is on the apse of Saint Perpetua in Tirano and Saint Alessandro in Lovero; a drape with lions adorned a destroyed church of Saint Martino of Serravalle in Sant’Antonio Morignone.

Il territorio Comunale è nettamente diviso in zona pianeggiante, in gran parte urbanizzata e marginalmente agricola e in zona montuoso-boschiva, semi-abbandonata.

  • Geomechanical Studies of an Alpine Rock Mass
ROCKENG09: Proceedings of the 3rd CANUS Rock Mechanics Symposium, Toronto, May 2009 (Ed: M.Diederichs and G. Grasselli) Geomechanical studies of an alpine rock mass Tiziana Apuani , Gianpaolo Giani, Andrea Merri University of Milan - Dept. of Earth Science ABSTRACT: The study refers to an area of about 70 km2, extended in the Italian Central Alps along the the San Giacomo Valley where different civil and mining works are present The re- gional geological setting is related to the Pennidic Nappe arrangement, characterized by the em- placement of sub-horizontal gneissic bodies resulting from the Mesoalpine isoclinalic folding of crystalline basements, emplaced throw East, and separated by matasedimentary cover units. The investigated geological rocks, belong to the “Tambò”Unit, overlapped by its meta-sedimentary cover and by the “Suretta” Unit. The tectonic contact gently dips to the E–NE. The valley, fur- rowed by the Liro Torrent, follows a N–S striking tectonic lineament, almost parallel to the nappe contact. A number of more then 70 sites, distributed in the studied area, were chosen and detailed structural and geomechanical field surveys were performed to characterize the rock masses, its intact rock and discontinuities. The procedure identifies the number of joint sets, their representative orientation, the set spacing, the type of movement, the amount of dilatation, the degree of alteration, the roughness coefficient, the presence and nature of infill. Rock mass quality indexes, such as the Rock Mass Rating (Bieniawski, 1989) or the Geological Strength Index (Hoek et al. 2002) have been evaluated in each surveyed site. The work is a contribute in assessing how the geometrical and geomechanical properties of the rock masses can be regarded as regionalized variables.

  • The Route of Terraces in Valtellina: Community Involvement and Turism for the Enhancement of Cultural Landscape
TERRACED LANDSCAPES CHOOSING THE FUTURE 1 III World Meeting on Terraced Landscapes THE ROUTE OF TERRACES IN VALTELLINA: COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND TURISM FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF CULTURAL LANDSCAPE Dario Foppoli* Fulvio di Capita** Fondazione di Sviluppo Locale Amministrazione Provinciale di Sondrio Via Piazzi, 23 Corso XXV Aprile, 22 23100 Sondrio - ITALY 23100 Sondrio- ITALY [email protected] [email protected] * Local Development Foundation - Sondrio - ** Provincia di Sondrio, servizio ITALY Produzioni vegetali, assistenza tecnica, infrastrutture e foreste - Sondrio - ITALY Abstract Following the experience acquired in the Distretto Culturale della Valtellina (Valtellina Cultural District) project, the territory was stimulated to further strengthen the relationship between culture, heritage/cultural landscape and the economy. The process emphasized the need to implement positive synergies across these fields and to experiment models of collaboration, which due to the distinctive features of the Valtellina valley hinge on an appropriate development of cultural tourism. The cultural landscape of the Valtellina terraced area was identified as the first asset from which to begin to develop a quality tourism policy. The idea is to create a walking and cycling route called ‘Via dei Terrazzamenti’ (The Route of Terraces), linking existing routes and paths (thus minimizing environmental impact) and allowing tourists to visit the terraced landscape. This has resulted in the local community acquiring a greater awareness of its territory and offering tourists an interesting cognitive experience. Key words: cultural landscape, quality tourism, community involvement, pedestrian route, cycle route 1 Introduction In Valtellina, as in all other alpine areas, the landscape is characterized by centuries-old signs traced by the man and by the close relationship that has necessarily developed between the territory and human activities: there are signs of this both in high-mountain and valley-bottom areas.

Since the day it was finished, art students have journeyed to Milan to view the work, which takes up a refectory wall in a Dominican convent next to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The 20th-century writer Aldous Huxley called it “the saddest work of art in the world”: he was referring not to the impact of the scene – the moment when Christ tells his disciples “one of you will betray me” – but to the fresco’s state of deterioration.
