Produced with financial assistance from The Couchiching Conservancy. The City of Kawartha Lakes Flora Project is sponsored by the Kawartha Field Naturalists based in Fenelon Falls, Ontario. In 2008, information about plants in CKL was scattered and scarce. At the urging of Michael Oldham, Biologist at the Natural Heritage Information Centre at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Dale Leadbeater and Anne Barbour formed a committee with goals to: • Generate a list of species found in CKL and their distribution, vouchered by specimens to be housed at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, making them available for future study by the scientific community; • Improve understanding of natural heritage systems in the CKL; • Provide insight into changes in the local plant communities as a result of pressures from introduced species, climate change and population growth; and, • Publish the findings of the project . Over eight years, more than 200 volunteers and landowners collected almost 2000 voucher specimens, with the permission of landowners. Over 10,000 observations and literature records have been databased. The project has documented 150 new species of which 60 are introduced, 90 are native and one species that had never been reported in Ontario to date. -
Spread of Sporobolus Neglectus and S. Vaginiflorus (Poaceae) in Slovenia and Neighbouring Countries
41 (2): (2017) 249-256 Original Scientific Paper Spread of Sporobolus neglectus and S. vaginiflorus (Poaceae) in Slovenia and neighbouring countries Nejc Jogan Department of Biology, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Večna pot 111, SI-1000 Ljubljana ABSTRACT: Systematic field sampling revealed that within 50 years since the first records in Slovenia, Sporobolus neglectus and S. vaginiflorus became widespread. They are two superficially similar N American annual grass species with cleistogamous spikelets and similar ecology that are confined to dry ruderal places in their European secondary range, especially along roads. The oldest records of naturalised populations of both species in Europe date back to the 1950s, when both were found for the first time in the Vipava valley (SW Slovenia). They spread slowly in the next decades to NE Italy, N Croatia, and S Austria until recently, when an explosive expansion has been observed along almost all the main roads in lowland and montane Slovenia. In addition to that, one or both of them have recently been recorded scattered in SE Europe (Hungary, Serbia, B&H, Montenegro) and W Europe (France, Switzerland). Sporobolus vaginiflorus is herein reported for the first time for Serbia, Herzegovina (in B&H), and Slavonia (in Croatia). INTRODUCTION This Check List of the Plants of New Jersey has been compiled by updating and integrating the catalogs prepared by such authors as Nathaniel Lord Britton (1881 and 1889), Witmer Stone (1911), and Norman Taylor (1915) with such other sources as recently-published local lists, field trip reports of the Torrey Botanical Society and the Philadelphia Botanical Club, the New Jersey Natural Heritage Program’s list of threatened and endangered plants, personal observations in the field and the herbarium, and observations by other competent field botanists. The Check List includes 2,758 species, a botanical diversity that is rather unexpected in a small state like New Jersey. Of these, 1,944 are plants that are (or were) native to the state - still a large number, and one that reflects New Jersey's habitat diversity. The balance are plants that have been introduced from other countries or from other parts of North America. The list could be lengthened by hundreds of species by including non-persistent garden escapes and obscure waifs and ballast plants, many of which have not been seen in New Jersey since the nineteenth century, but it would be misleading to do so. The Check List should include all the plants that are truly native to New Jersey, plus all the introduced species that are naturalized here or for which there are relatively recent records, as well as many introduced plants of very limited occurrence. But no claims are made for the absolute perfection of the list. Plant nomenclature is constantly being revised. Single old species may be split into several new species, or multiple old species may be combined into one. -

Abstract This checklist has 785 species and 801 taxa (for taxa, the varieties and subspecies are included in the count) in 90 plant families. The most common plant families are the grasses (Poaceae) and the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Of this total, 513 taxa are definitely known to occur on the Comanche National Grassland. The remaining 288 taxa occur in nearby areas of southeastern Colorado and may be discovered on the Comanche National Grassland. The Author Dr. Donald L. Hazlett has worked as an ecologist, botanist, ethnobotanist, and teacher in Latin America and in Colorado. He has specialized in the flora of the eastern plains since 1985. His many years in Latin America prompted him to include Spanish common names in this report, names that are seldom reported in floristic pub- lications. He is also compiling plant folklore stories for Great Plains plants. Since Don is a native of Otero county, this project was of special interest. Appendix D – Rare Plant Species and Wildlife Habitats Rare Plant Species and Wildlife Habitats The habitat profiles created for the Wildlife Action Plan have been developed for the purpose of describing the full range of habitats that support New Hampshire’s wildlife species. However, these habitats can also serve as useful units for identifying rare plant habitats. This appendix provides lists of rare plant species known to be associated with each WAP habitat type. In accordance with the Native Plant Protection Act (NH RSA 217-A), the New Hampshire Natural Heritage Bureau (NHB) maintains a list of the state’s rarest and most imperiled plant species. This list has been developed in cooperation with researchers, conservation organizations, and knowledgeable amateur botanists. Plant locations have been obtained from sources including herbarium specimens, personal contacts, the scientific literature, and through extensive field research. The list is updated regularly to reflect changes in information. For each habitat, a list of associated rare plant species is presented. These rare plant – habitat associations are based on known occurrences of each species in New Hampshire. It is possible that an individual species will have different habitat associations elsewhere in its range. For more information on dominant and characteristic plant species for each habitat, refer to the individual habitat profiles. INTRODUCTION The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's Division of Natural Heritage (DCR-DNH) was established to protect Virginia's Natural Heritage Resources. These Resources are defined in the Virginia Natural Area Preserves Act of 1989 (Section 10.1-209 through 217, Code of Virginia), as the habitat of rare, threatened, and endangered plant and animal species; exemplary natural communities, habitats, and ecosystems; and other natural features of the Commonwealth. DCR-DNH is the state's only comprehensive program for conservation of our natural heritage and includes an intensive statewide biological inventory, field surveys, electronic and manual database management, environmental review capabilities, and natural area protection and stewardship. Through such a comprehensive operation, the Division identifies Natural Heritage Resources which are in need of conservation attention while creating an efficient means of evaluating the impacts of economic growth. To achieve this protection, DCR-DNH maintains lists of the most significant elements of our natural diversity. -
