They undertook a vital religious function within both the plantation slave community and the institutionalised biracial and independent black church and many became a focal point for African American Christianity amongst slaves and free blacks. These religious leaders also took on a number of secular responsibilities, becoming counsellors, mediators, and advisors, individuals that blacks would frequently seek out for their opinion, advice and solace. African American religious leaders held a position considered to be vital and prestigious. But such a position was also perilous. Black religious leaders had to reconcile the conflicting demands of two groups whose needs were almost diametrically opposed. Slaves and free blacks wanted to hear a message of hope, but the Southern elite wanted to hear a message of obedience to ensure that their authority remained unchallenged. Appeasing both groups was an almost impossible task. Failing to meet their demands, however, could be disastrous for black religious leaders. Slaves and free blacks who heard a message of obedience to the Southern white elite rejected the authority of the black preacher, who was then often unable to continue his ministrations. Conversely, those who were considered to be teaching a message that was undermining the planter‟s authority faced reprisals from white society. These reprisals could be violent. In order to survive, black religious leaders had to chart a difficult course between the two groups, giving a sense of hope to the enslaved but in a manner that did not appear to undermine white authority. Within historical scholarship, it has been argued that African American religious leaders shared a common role. By the late antebellum period, however, a divide had emerged amongst black religious leaders. Although they continued to share many of the same goals, responsibilities, and challenges, the form of Christianity practiced by black preachers on the plantation was not the same as that practiced by licensed black ministers in the biracial and independent black church. Christianity within the plantation slave community continued to include African traditions and rituals that had survived the transatlantic crossing. Christianity within the biracial and independent black church, however, had begun to reject these African traditions as backward and outdated, and had moved instead towards a form of religion that, whilst still emotional and uplifting, was also more formal and hierarchical, resembling the Christianity of white Southern evangelicals. Black preachers and licensed black ministers were preaching Christianity in the face of adversity and had the potential to become political leaders within the African American community. The realisation of this potential was hindered, not only by the constant supervision of these religious leaders by the white elite but also through the refusal of black preachers and ministers to use Christianity to justify acts of resistance. My parents, Roger and Caroline, as well as my sister Hannah, have supported and encouraged me throughout my research. 6 Introduction In the 1850s, Northern journalist Frederick Law Olmsted visited an African American church in New Orleans. Upon entering he encountered a black preacher about to begin his sermon. Olmsted recalled the rough nature of the preacher‟s discourse, noting that while the sermon was based on a Biblical text „words were frequently misplaced, and their meaning evidently misapprehended, while the grammar and pronunciation were sometimes such as to make the idea intended to be conveyed by the speaker incomprehensible to me‟. Yet despite the uneducated content of the sermon, the preacher‟s words still had a tremendous impact on the black congregants, as members let forth with „shouts, and groans, terrific shrieks, and indescribable expressions of ecstacy [sic] – of pleasure or agony – and even stamping, jumping, and clapping of hands‟. Even Olmsted commented that „I was once surprised to find my own muscles all stretched, as if ready for a struggle, my face glowing, and

    George Liele :Negro Slavery's Prophet of Deliverance EORGE LIELE (Lisle, Sharpe) is o:p.e of the unsung heroes of Greligious history, whose exploits and attainments have gone vir­ tually unnoticed except in a few little-known books and journals of Negro history. Liele's spectacular but steady devotion to the cause of his Master began with his conversion in 1773 and subsequent exercise of his ·cc call" in his own and nearby churches; it ended with mUltiple thousands of simple black folk raisec;I from the callous indignity of human bondage to freedom and a glorious citizenship in the king­ dom of God, largely as a consequence of this man's Christian witness in life and word. George was born a slave to slave parents, Liele and Nancy, in servitude to the family of Henry Sharpe in Virginia. From his birth, about 1750, to his eventual freedom in 1773, Liele belonged to the Sharpe family, with whom' he was removed to Burke County, Georgia, prior to 1770. Henry Sharpe, his master, was a Loyalist supporter and a deacon in the Buckhead Creek Baptist Church pastored by the Rev. Matthew Moore. Of his own parents and early years Liele reported in a letter of 1791 written from. Kingston, Jamaica: ~'I was born in Virginia, my father's name was Liele, and my mother's name Nancy; I cannot ascertain much of them, as I went to several parts of America when young, and at length resided in New Georgia; but was informed both by white and black people, that my father was the only black person who knew the Lord in a spiritual way in that country.

    Religions and the abolition of slavery - a comparative approach William G. Clarence-Smith Economic historians tend to see religion as justifying servitude, or perhaps as ameliorating the conditions of slaves and serving to make abolition acceptable, but rarely as a causative factor in the evolution of the ‘peculiar institution.’ In the hallowed traditions, slavery emerges from scarcity of labour and abundance of land. This may be a mistake. If culture is to humans what water is to fish, the relationship between slavery and religion might be stood on its head. It takes a culture that sees certain human beings as chattels, or livestock, for labour to be structured in particular ways. If religions profoundly affected labour opportunities in societies, it becomes all the more important to understand how perceptions of slavery differed and changed. It is customary to draw a distinction between Christian sensitivity to slavery, and the ingrained conservatism of other faiths, but all world religions have wrestled with the problem of slavery. Moreover, all have hesitated between sanctioning and condemning the 'embarrassing institution.' Acceptance of slavery lasted for centuries, and yet went hand in hand with doubts, criticisms, and occasional outright condemnations. Hinduism The roots of slavery stretch back to the earliest Hindu texts, and belief in reincarnation led to the interpretation of slavery as retribution for evil deeds in an earlier life. Servile status originated chiefly from capture in war, birth to a bondwoman, sale of self and children, debt, or judicial procedures. Caste and slavery overlapped considerably, but were far from being identical. Brahmins tried to have themselves exempted from servitude, and more generally to ensure that no slave should belong to 1 someone from a lower caste.

    “I think I shall never be comfortable again . .” The Family During Slavery No less than any other population, enslaved African- Americans acted upon the fundamental human aspiration to perpetuate their family lineage and care for their kin, but slavery posed daunting obstacles. They created extensive kinship networks, in part because all West African societies placed a high value on such networks. In the New World, such networks took on a new significance, as they mitigated the worst effects of the slave system. As owners routinely separated husbands and wives, parents and children, sisters and brothers, enslaved people visited each other and remained in touch as long as they stayed within the region. As such, kinship networks extended from plantation to plantation and, in some cases, from plantation to city. These connections helped soften the impact of family separations, as enslaved people remained in contact with at least some of their family members. Kinship ties helped foster a distinct identity among enslaved people so that they never absorbed their owners’ interests as their own. This consciousness enabled them to resist the exacting work regimens and arbitrary punishments as they weathered the family separations imposed by their owners.1 When Adam Plummer and Emily Saunders married in 1841, they not only pledged to take care of each other and their children, but they also joined together two large extended families with deep roots in Prince Georges County, Maryland. These connections sustained Adam and Emily, as they raised eight children (a ninth child died as an infant). While enslaved, Adam and Emily never lived in the same quarters, separated by as much as twenty-six miles.

Simon Schama’s Rough Crossings recounts the hitherto underrepresented history of the contribution of black enslaved peoples to the American war of Independence while Caryl Phillips’s dramatized adaptation of Schama’s narrative history is both a response to and critique of Schama’s methodology, revealing its limitations and unintentional biases. Both historian and playwright use formal narrative or dramaturgical devices to resolve the restraints of historiographical methodology, employing linguistic strategies which themselves pose various ontological challenges. This paper examines how emplotment, while making the story Schama tells vivid and engaging, also marginalises some of its chief actants, privileging the role of the white abolitionists over the agency of the black protagonists. On the other hand, Phillips uses emplotment and other dramaturgical devices – especially the rejection of authenticity and the deployment of anachronism - to reposition the black protagonists at the centre of the narrative, while constructing a dialogue between past and present, revealing in the process the impact of the ongoing legacy of the trans-Atlantic slave trade on contemporary life.

Drawing on a range of reformist narratives and writings, I suggest that the representational tendencies surrounding slavery and education in eighteenth-century reform literature can best be understood through what I call the “Protestant utopianism” that informs the didactic imagination of the Georgian era. This study thus examines a specific current of intellectual thought animating representations of colonial slavery—a tradition that was both independent of (and often in tension with) colonialist attempts to naturalize and legitimate the racial ideologies upon which the system of Atlantic chattel slavery depended. In contrast to current critical approaches, which continue to rely heavily upon the lens of imperial race ideology or “colonial discourse” to read slavery in Georgian literature, I examine the ways in which slave societies were engaged as universal landscapes—allegorical and emblematic spaces in which a variety of social process relating to the reform of civil society were enacted. These narratives of amelioration, I argue, continually depict the reform of slave societies not to establish a clear self-other ii dialectic based on discrete racial or geographical differences, but rather to identify Britain’s own unfinished reformation—the everyday forms of mental slavery and social violence which proliferated at home no less than in the far-flung world of the colonies.
