The collection also includes files of deceased, retired, and resigned missionaries. Size: 336 linear ft. Collection #: AR 551 – 2 Historical Sketch The Foreign Mission Board was one of the two missionary sending agencies established by the Southern Baptist Convention when it organized in Augusta, Georgia in 1845. The Board adopted some missionaries already in China and Africa at that time and began to commission individuals to mission service. The Board used excerpts from the missionaries’ letters in the Foreign Mission Board’s publications to inform Southern Baptists of the missionary activities and challenges and to encourage financial support. The Foreign Mission Board has always been located in Richmond, Virginia. In 1997, the name of the Foreign Mission Board was changed to the International Mission Board. The Archives of the Foreign Mission Board began transferring missionary correspondence files in 1985. The transfer of correspondence files of retired, deceased, and resigned missionaries has continued through the years Scope and Content Note This series of records of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention consists of correspondence files and appointment files of missionaries appointed by the Board from 1846. The appointment and correspondence files of deceased or retired missionaries are included in this collection. The files were transferred to the Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives beginning in the 1980s. The IMB retains ownership of the records, and some records are not accessible to researchers based on the record schedules adopted by the IMB. Information on this collection is located in a database and in a printed report. The files include biographical information on the missionaries, application forms, reference letters, and letters of application. Also included are correspondence and reports from the mission station. The files are arranged in the following scheme: Boxes 1 – 65 are arranged in alphabetical order by missionary name. Boxes 66 and following are maintained in the arrangement in which they were received from the IMB, and the database or list is used to access the files.
