Mission: IFB’s mission is prevention of disability as an effective means for achieving the goals of poverty alleviation.

Objectives: To achieve sustainable increase in the living standards of the rural poor by pre venting the causes of disability through education, awareness, training and ap propriate social and economic programmes and also through curative medical services. Projects of IFB ibon Tari, the Floating Hospital, first of its kind for the ci- vilian population, is IFB’s unique venture that has gained Jhuge popularity over the years. Jibon Tari’s greatest forte is its mobility, which enables it to reach to the most remote rural communities in the riverine areas of Bangladesh. Since 1999, the hospital has docked at 26 locations along the different rivers of Bangladesh providing health care services to the most disad- vantaged communities in the remotest areas. At present, Jibon Tari floating hospital is running its 44th project.

mpact Masudul Haque Memorial Community Health Centre (IMCHC) has been in operation in since I1995. Major facilities of the centre include: fully equipped operation theatre; in patient ward; pre and post-natal checkup and delivery facilities; pathology and radiology; OPD etc. The outreach ac- tivities include regular satellite clinics, Mothers’ Club meetings for dissemination of information on relationship between health, sanitation, nutrition and disability, and support to poor families to establish home gardens amongst other activities. In the year 2010:

SJWADC manufactures different kinds of affordable orthotic and prosthetic devices. This Assistive Device Center has a physiotherapy unit where qualified physiotherapists are available to serve the patients. A large number of poor people are receiving physiotherapy and assistive device services at their doorstep through SJWADC.

In the year 2010:

MPACT started a programme for prevention and cure of dis- ability in Meherpur district in September 2004. Initially there Iwas a small Out Patient Department Clinic. Impact Jibon Mela Health Centre, a full- fledged hospital with training facili- ties was constructed. This health center has been providing medi- cal and surgical treatment to the poor people of Meherpur district since April 2007. In Meherpur there are 300 mothers’ club, where around 6,000 un- derserved women are active members and who are meeting the challenges of building a healthy society. In the year 2010:

“It was hard to believe that day by day I was getting blind but I was helpless. I was worried about my husband as he was avoiding me due to my low vision. But it was amazing that Jibon Tari brought tons of hope for me, I received the surgery and can see again. Its really a blessing for me.” - said Monowara after receiving cataract surgery from IFB.

“Now, I don’t have to think to get loan at high interest to village usurer. I’m free from all sorts of anxiety and leading a happy life with my family. And all credit goes to IFB. It is them who helped me to become finan- cially solvent using my own resources and labor” - said Lipi Begum after starting her own home garden in Damurhuda, Chuadanga.

At just five years, Fatema faced the hard fact of life; rejection, denial and disappointment. . Fatema would pray for a miracle that would make her look just like any other child. Her pray comes true after doing a surgery at IMCHC. “I feel joy, much joy. I thank all the doctors of IFB. May they keep performing this good work, not only for my child, but for all the children who need it.” - said father of Fatema.

At the age of 14 years Joynul lost his two legs and one hand in a train accident.. Joynul was given two below-knee prosthetic legs free of cost. and now is able to mobilize himself again using assistive device given by IFB. He has managed a job in a grocery shop and now earning money for his family. “Its really blessing for us and I’m surprised to see my son walking and working. We really grateful to SJWADC who helped my son to have artificial legs.”- said Joynul’s mother. Projects of IFB’ 2010

As a partner of FK, IFB Ijoined the Asia Health Research Network, an exchange programme established by five organizations from 5 countries in Asia led by Prince of Singkla University (PSU) Thailand. The primary purpose of the programme is to promote the development of human resources and health research capacity in epidemiol- ogy and community health care activities.

Exchange Dr. Ferdaws Alam (Medical Officer - Impact Jibon Tari Floating Hospital) is continuing his Masters in Epidemiology in PSU. Mr. Sanchir Bayasakh from Mongolia has been working with Impact Foundation Bangladesh as volunteer consultant for “Capacity Building in Research at IFB since April 2010 under FK Exchange Programme.

Research Dr. Joydhan Tanchangya completed his Masters in Epidemiology from PSU and submitted a research paper for publication titled: “Use of Traditional Fuels and the Risk of Young Adult Cataract in Rural Bangladesh: A Hosbital-based Case-control Study”

IFB organized FK Mid-project review (phase 5) and Planning Meeting (phase 6) in Dhaka on 10-15 October 2010. Impact Bangladesh Receives Prestigious STARS Award-UK

n recognition of its ser- vice in the field of -pre Ivention and cure of dis- ability, Impact Foundation Bangladesh (IFB) received the prestigious 2010 STARS Award in the category of Health. For its tireless efforts and innovative approaches to prevention of disability and meeting substantial health and disability needs in Ban- gladesh since 1993, IFB was selected from among hun- dreds of nominations across the world to become the fi- nalist for this award.

On behalf of Impact Founda- tion Bangladesh, the STARS Award was received by its Director, Dr. Hasib Mahmud in a colorful ceremony in London on December 2, 2010.

Acknowledgement

IFB has been working for 18 years to achieve its mission. Meanwhile, thousands of rural people have been served to overcome different forms of disabilities. Since 1999 IFB has operated 40,585 patients, 742,092 people received treatment, 35,377 patients received physiotherapy treatment, 7,510 physically impaired persons received different assistive devices, 4,848 traditional birth attendants (TBA) received skill de- velopment training, 12,372 adolescent girls received rubella vaccination to avoid German measles, 9,090 school teachers and community leaders were trained on early detection of disabilities and 985,647 people received health education.

These achievements have been possible because of generous financial, material and moral support of our partners in abroad and Bangladesh.
