    THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

Jahrhunderts hatte sich Hamburg infolge der Reichsgründung und eines rasanten wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs zu einer modernen Hafenstadt von Weltformat entwickelt. Jedoch fehlte Hamburg bis dahin eine repräsentative Schauspielbühne, die dem gewachsenen Selbstbewusstsein der Stadt und seines Großbürgertums Rechnung tragen konnte. Die damals existierenden Theater in Hamburg boten vor allem musikalische Genres und kommerzielle Unterhaltung. Auf Initiative des Theaterkritikers Heinrich E. Wallsee und des Vereins „Hamburger Bürger zu St. Georg“ entstanden Pläne zur Errichtung eines Schauspielhauses nach Vorbild des Wiener Burgtheaters. Es sollte in direkter Nähe des geplanten „Centralbahnhofs“ entstehen. Im Juni 1899 gründeten 84 Teilhaber, überwiegend Hamburger Finanziers und Kaufleute, die „Aktiengesellschaft Deutsches Schauspielhaus“. Sie beriefen den bekannten Wiener Literaturprofessor Alfred von Berger zum ersten Intendanten und beauftragten die erfahrenen Wiener Architekten Ferdinand Fellner und Hermann Helmer mit einem Theaterneubau, der sich in seiner neobarocken Gestalt am Wiener Volkstheater anlehnte. Die Benennung in „Deutsches Schauspielhaus“ knüpfte nicht zufällig an das Nationaltheater-Projekt an, welches Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts ebenfalls durch finanzkräftige Hamburger Bürger betrieben worden war und für das sich zeitweise auch Gotthold Ephraim Lessing engagiert hatte. Die Gründerjahre 1900-1918 Mit seiner Kapazität für 1.831 Zuschauer war das Deutsche Schauspielhaus überaus ambitioniert und auch größer als manches Opernhaus konzipiert worden. Bis heute zählt das Schauspielhaus zu den größten Sprechtheatern im deutschsprachigen Raum. Am 15. September 1900 wurde es mit einer Vorstellung von Goethes „Iphigenie auf Tauris“ eröffnet. Regie führte Alfred von Berger selbst.

Department of History of Art [email protected] Abstract Cities have been inspirational for the creators of visual art works long since, first as mere secondary, additional motifs to indicate the “urban” environment of the main scene, then as subject-matters in their own right. Those images could depict both imaginary and actual cities of the past and of the future, including mythological and Biblical locations, documenting distant lands and fantasizing on the appearance of utopian cities. In some of these aspects, the history of city representations shares significant similarities with the history of landscape depictions. In the present paper, however, I aim to focus on a curious and particular detail in this pictorial tradition. Following and further investigating a brief reflection by Michel Makarius from his 2004 book on Ruins, I would like to compare the visuality and aesthetic effects of dense and empty cityscapes, of which two classical examples could be the capriccios – imaginary views of cities completely filled with aesthetically pleasing elements, including magnificent remnants of the Antique heritage – and representations of cities in which their emptiness is highlighted vol 63, nr 4 June the 5th 2021.   • Life Magazine and the Power of Photography Is Organized by the Princeton University Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
    LIFE Magazine In the period from the Great Depression to the Vietnam War, the majority of photographs printed and consumed in the United States appeared on the pages of illustrated magazines. Among them, Life, published weekly from 1936 to 1972, was both extraordinarily popular, with studies suggesting that at its height the magazine reached approximately 25 percent of the US population, and visually revolutionary. It used images in ways that fundamentally shaped how its readers understood photography and experienced key historical events. Drawing on unprecedented access to Life magazine’s picture and paper archives, this exhibition brings together original press prints, contact sheets, shooting scripts, internal memos, and layout experiments that shed new light on the collaborative process behind many now-iconic images and photographic stories. Life’s editorial and layout teams worked together, sequencing photographs and crafting brief captions to create stories that often ran across multiple pages of the magazine. Life’s impact relied on its approach to visual storytelling, and its photographs played an important role in twentieth-century dialogues surrounding war, race, technology, art, and national identity. Through the vision of its founder, Henry R. Luce, its editorial teams’ points of view, and the demo- graphics of its readers, Life’s stories promoted a predominately white, middle-class perspective on politics and culture. It has been our attitude for twenty-five years. ... This wheel is a Robber Wheel [Räuberrad], and a wheel has to move. It is not a museum, it doesn’t stay put, it moves onto the next place. ... It may come back, but it is our Robber Wheel and that meant: “Beware, Volksbühne! Danger lurks here!” And that is what we did. We practiced solidarity with the homeless, with political lepers, with anti- socials. A friend of mine from Hamburg said: “It’s unbelievable how an antisocial —like you—lasted so long and actually brought people together through work, through artistic work.” ... I thank my enemies for making it clear to me that art has to polarize. More, I thank my friends, and I thank you—whatever you think: it is important to have brought you together. I have a political hope for this city. As always, one will be disappointed. That’s part of it. You win battles and lose wars. But you have to try again and again. That is the bottom line.1 There is so much to say about the persistent critiques of and mobilizations against Chris Dercon’s vision (or lack thereof) of the newly named Volksbühne Berlin. My task here, however, is a different one: to begin to understand why there has also been such persistent mobilization on behalf of the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.

Zu Gast ist heute Professor Ivan Nagel. Er ist Theaterintendant, Dramaturg, Kritiker, Festivalerfinder und -leiter, Entdecker von jungen Theatertalenten, emeritierter Professor aus Berlin und nicht zuletzt natürlich glänzender Essayist und Schriftsteller. Herr Professor Nagel, Sie haben 1999 den Fritz-Kortner-Preis bekommen und Sie haben in Ihrer Rede bei der Verleihung gesagt, der innere Antrieb für alle diese Berufe in und um das Theater herum war und ist, Künstlern zu danken und von Künstlern zu lernen. Daraus spricht innige Nähe zur Kunst und zu Künstlern, aber auch Freiheit und Distanz. Nagel: Ich glaube ganz einfach, dass ich in meinem Leben einigen großen Menschen begegnet bin. Und in meinen ersten 20, 30 Jahren waren das natürlich ältere Leute als ich. Mein Lehrer an der Universität war Theodor W. Adorno.     Does Documentary Photography Still Matter? by Kim Newton A culminating document submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Photography Brooks Institute of Photography June 2006 ABSTRACT This research establishes the importance of Life magazine as a benchmark for determining whether the Internet and its Web-based new media environment is an effective venue for publishing documentary photography. By posing the question, Does Documentary Photography Still Matter? this study examines the medium’s ability to reach an audience and effect social, political or economic change in the current new media environment as it once did during the Golden Age of photography, when Life magazine dominated the scene. The findings point to an evolution in documentary photography that reached its peak during the print medium years of Life magazine but since has evolved and taken on powerful new forms in the current multimedia environment. The findings define specific examples attributed to affect and change resulting from the new media capability of instantaneous interaction for the viewer. In addition, the research conveys a need for new business models to support the work of documentary photographers and the publishers that support it. This latter point is crucial for the future development of media, documentary photography and those who define them as their livelihood. The research concludes that the future of documentary photography as an effective communication tool continues to evolve with new trends in society and technology.     The PHOTO REVIEW NEWSLETTER July / August 2020 BLACK LIVES MATTER Black Lives Matter. This is an indisputable statement. Around the world, murders of Black people by police and vigilantes have inspired uprisings, rage, despair, and demands for systemic change. While these demands often focus on the injustices of the government, non-Black people should all be asking ourselves what systems we are a part of and how we might influ- ence these systems to be part of necessary change. As you well know, I am the editor of The Photo Review. As you might know, I am a white, cisgender, straight man, old enough to be in the at-risk group during this pan- demic. Inhabiting these places of privilege, I consider it particularly important for me to ask myself what my place is in this struggle. My family is Jewish — my father and his family were immigrants escaping pogroms in Russia, and the reality of the Holocaust was ever present in my childhood. I do not com- pare these experiences with those of Black Americans — rather, I want to express that I see my fight against various forms of white supremacy on a very personal level. I know I must use what privilege I have to work toward the implementation of the values of the Black Lives Matter movement.     The Photographic Spirit Inspiring Photo Lives and Images By David Joseph Marcou Photo by MAM David Joseph Marcou is a playwright, poet, journalist, documentary photographer, author, editor, and father/father-in-law. He’s published more than 50 of his own books, including his online version of the complete history of Picture Post Magazine, ‘All the Best’ (La Crosse History Unbound), and his 11-volume photobook series, ‘Human Character’. His works have twice been nominated for Pulitzer Prizes, and have been included in archives, museums, libraries, and galleries, around the world. In 2011-2012, two of his Presidential Campaign 2008 photos were included in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s group-exhibition, ‘Gift of the Artist’. In November 1981, he met and interviewed Bert Hardy and Mr. Hardy’s Korean War journalist-partner James Cameron in their respective homes in Brit- ain, and photographed Mr. Hardy and his dogs for the British National Portrait Gallery Photographs Collection then. The Centennial of Bert Hardy’s birth is May 19, 2013. From 1984-87, David worked and lived as a journalist in Seoul, Korea. He was a college writing and photography instructor from 1991-2002 in Wisconsin, and has held Migrant Mother Photo-Portrait, many journalism and related jobs during the last 35 years, having lived Nipomo, California, ca. 1935, by Dorothea Lange, in Missouri, Iowa, Britain, and South Korea, in addition to Wisconsin.
