Verena Bentele hatte im November ihre Karriere als Langläuferin und Biathletin beendet. Nach dem Gewinn zahlreicher Medaillen, darunter alleine zwölf paralympische Goldmedaillen, will sich die blinde Athletin künftig als Botschafterin des IPC vor allem für den Nachwuchs einbringen. Die Bambi- Preisträgerin 2010 hat sich bei der Wahl des IPC gegen ihre Konkurrentinnen, die russische Biathletin Wassiljewa Ljubow sowie die alpinen Skiläuferinnen Lauren Woolstencroft (Kanada), Henrieta Farkasowa (Slowakei) und Alana Nichols (USA), durchsetzen können. Auch Gerd Schönfelder ließ starke Konkurrenz hinter sich. Mit ihm im Rennen um den Paralympics Sport Award standen der russische Biathlet Irek Zaripov, die Skialpinfahrer Jakub Krako (Slowenien) und Adam Hall (Neuseeland) sowie der Skilangläufer Brian McKeever (Canada). Gerd Schönfelder, der im Januar vom Behindertensport zurückgetreten war, hat bei sechs Paralympics- und fünf WM-Teilnahmen 30mal Gold errungen.
