Peaks Island Branch Library Archives Finding Aid to the Collection.

The Peaks Island Branch Library Archives comprise the 15 linear feet of Special Collections assembled and located at the Peaks Island Branch of the Portland Public Library. The collection of ephemera, cemetery records, scrapbooks, postcards, photographic images, periodicals, maps, reports, audiovisuals, and Peaks Island printed material span the 20th century- up to the present. Bulk dates for the archive are from circa 1960 – present. Subjects include Peaks Island community and government topics, tourism, history (particularly the role of Peaks Island during World War II), development and land use, genealogy, education, theatre (including the Gem Theatre and Greenwood Garden- both popular in the 1920s and 1930s), writing, and visual art. The Peaks Island community- part of the city of Portland, - developed a distinct identity and culture. These aspects and emphases are documented in the Archives’ collection of Periodicals. The full collection was processed and digitized in the Portland Public Library’s Portland Room (PPL Special Collections & Archives), from October 2017 – January 2018. Special thanks to Peaks Island volunteers Monica Stevenson, Nancy Hall, Sarah Alechnowicz, and Portland Room volunteer Eric Pomorski.

During the school year 2000 – 2001, Author/Illustrator Debby Atwell came to Peaks Island School for a week, working with the students to make a book of short stories. There were four classes that year, Kindergarten, Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4 and Grade 5. Each class created its own story in an unusual arrangement where the class collaborated on the story, with each student getting to write a page, but another child would illustrate that text. When the work was complete, Debby Atwell took it home and bound the stories into a single volume with handmade-paper- covered board covers.

The Peaks Island Branch Library secured a grant for the author residency and handled arrangements in partnership with school principal Barbara Hoppin. Classroom teachers were Heidi Farr, Kindergarten: Wendy Litchfield, Grades 1-2; Martha Gross, Grades 3-4; Roberta Deane, Grade 5.
