Wool, 156 x 128 cm. paul vandenbroeck The ‘Nameless Motif’: On the Cross-Cultural 113 Iconography of an Energetic Form Paul Vandenbroeck * As I strolled through a quiet Tuscan townlet on a late summer’s afternoon in * KMSKAntwerpen/IMMRC-KULeuven 1973, in the days before the rural hinterland was changed for ever by the tourist invasion, I was struck by the sight of an elderly lady sitting at a table by the entrance to her house. Displayed on the tabletop were various home-made items of lace and textile that she was offering for sale. As a student of the his- tory of art, I was all too familiar with canonised Art, with capital A, but en- tirely ignorant about domestically crafted textiles. Yet I stopped in my tracks, captivated as I was by an ungraspable aesthetics that was quite alien to me, as it was light years away from the universe of male-dominated Renaissance art. There was one piece, featuring both abstract and stylised patterns, that I found particularly attractive – despite myself. When I enquired about the price, the woman asked: ‘Are you married?’. I told her I was not. ‘Then I cannot sell this piece to you’, she said. I stood there dumbfound, unable to comprehend why this should be the case, and tried to assure her that I found the piece genuinely beautiful. Speaking in the local dialect, slowly and clearly for my benefit, she said she believed me, but that that was not the point. -

The kilims are large tapestry-woven textiles. The visually stunning and colorful Anatolian kilims communicate the aesthetic choices of the village and nomadic women who created them. -

Professor Department of Textiles and Apparel Cornell Department of Textiles and Apparel University, Ithaca, NY Cornell University, Ithaca, NY Forms of Production Past research, conducted mainly in the 1970s and 1980s, has identified three forms of production in which carpets are woven as commodities1. These are petty-commodity production, the putting-out system, and workshop production. Petty-commodity production involves weaving in the home, with the male head of the household or other male relatives selling the finished product to a carpet dealer or at a local or regional market (fig. 1). The family owns the loom and other weaving supplies, and family members purchase or prepare the yarn themselves. -

Islamic domes of crossed-arches: Origin, geometry and structural behavior P. Fuentes and S. Huerta Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain ABSTRACT: Crossed-arch domes are one of the earliest types of ribbed vaults. In them the ribs are intertwined forming polygons. The earliest known vaults of this type are found in the Great Mosque of Córdoba in Spain built in the mid 10th century, though the type appeared later in places as far as Armenia or Persia. This has generated a debate on their possible origin; a historical outline is given and the different hypotheses are discussed. Geometry is a fundamental part and the different patterns are examined. Though geometry has been thoroughly studied in Hispanic-Muslim decoration, the geometry of domes has very rarely been considered. The geometrical patterns in plan will be examined and afterwards, the geometric problems of passing from the plan to the three-dimensional space will be considered. Finally, a discussion about the possible structural behaviour of these domes is sketched. Crossed-arch domes are a singular type of ribbed vaults. Their characteristic feature is that the ribs that form the vault are intertwined, forming polygons or stars, leaving an empty space in the centre. The fact that the earliest known vaults of this type are found in the Great Mosque of Córdoba, built in the mid 10th century, has generated a debate on their possible origin. The thesis that appears to have most support is that of the eastern origin. This article describes the different hypothesis, to then proceed with a discussion of the geometry. -
General Carpet and Rug Care
GENERAL CARPET AND RUG CARE If you give it minimal care, a good quality rug will last for generations. First, and foremost, you should always use anti-slip underlay. It will protect the underside of the rug, make it softer to walk on, and keep the rug from sliding around the room. Different types of underlay should be used, depending on the where your rug will be placed. Underlay is a critical flooring component. It is the foundation for your carpet, responsible for enhancing both comfort and durability. Underlay is constructed of several different materials, including sponge rubber, foam rubber, urethane foam, bonded urethane, and felted combinations of hair and jute. In addition, you should use protectors on the feet of any tables or chairs that will be resting on top of the rug. This will prevent indentations and wear. It is also important to keep your rug clean. Dirt and grit settled in the rug work like sandpaper to wear away at the knots. Regular vacuuming should be sufficient. However, be careful of the fringe! If your rug sustains serious damage such as a tear- this is not something to be handled by anyone less than an expert. The same thing is true if your rug is stained. Since many dyes are made from organic substances, it takes a great deal of experience to clean a rug without bleaching it. Finally, note that all rugs, no matter how fine, will fade somewhat over time. But in high-quality rugs, this process is similar to the aging of a fine wine. -

Rugs Weave Scholar-in- New Lives Residence n 1978, German chemist Dr. Harald Boehmer sparked “The Great IAnatolian Rug Revolution,” transforming the entire Turkish rug industry. Even more than an industrial revolu tion, it has become a cultural survival project known as DOBAG, a Turkish acronym for Nat ural Dye Research and Development Project, which has restored the ancient art of handwo ven carpets and established the first-ever woman’s rug weaving cooperative in the Islamic world. Boehmer will give a lecture, Nomads of Anatolia, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, in Hudson Audi torium, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. The lecture is free and open to the public as part of JCCC’s Scholar-in-Residence program. A reception with Boehmer begins at 6 p.m. During his Sept. 13-17 residency, Boehmer will also address JCCC textile classes. Boehmer’s passion for native rugs began when he was teaching in Turkey. Using thin-layer chromatography, the chemist was able to ana lyze the dyes used in old Turkish rugs and match the vibrant colors to their original plant sources.
