CHORAL FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT

7 MARCH 2021 AT 4:00 PM The Cathedral of the Incarnation Garden City, New York

ABOUT EVENSONG In the monastic tradition of the western church, the “hours” are appointed times for prayer throughout the day. • Matins/Lauds, in the middle of the night; • Prime, at sunrise; • Terce, 9:00 am; • Sext, noon; • None, 3:00 pm; • Vespers, at sunset; • Compline, at bedtime. This continuous cycle of prayer, known as the , includes , , responsories, hymns, versicles & responses, readings, and prayers. Archbishop Thomas Cranmer (1489 – 1556), who compiled the first for the following the , simplified and reduced these hours into the liturgies of Matins (Morning Prayer) and Evensong (Evening Prayer). Choral Evensong is sung Evening Prayer; the choir sings including the Preces (prayers), the Psalm, the canticles ( & Nunc dimittis) and an anthem while the congregation participates vicariously – listening attentively to the choir’s offering of music and to the proclamation of the Scriptures, while singing with vigor the hymns. Terms – a non-metrical song used in liturgical worship. Latin for “little song”. Responsory – a prayer(s) with responses. Preces – brief responsive prayers which are often based on verses of scripture, especially the . Versicle – the first half of the preces, sung by an officiant or cantor and answered by the choir.

ABOUT THE MUSIC AT THIS EVENSONG

Much of the music used today is from Twentieth Century England, with one brief foray into the Netherlands.

The Opening Voluntary is by the Dutch composer Jacques van Oortmerssen, who for much of his life was professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory. He also became organist at the historic Waalse Kerk in Amsterdam, with its fabled Christian Müller organ of 1734, one of the most important historic instruments in The Netherlands. This piece heard today, dedicated to his teacher Marie Claire Alain, is based on the tune O Welt, ich muss dich lassen, which follows as the Introit. The piece is written with sixteenth note varying rhythms in both hands, with the tune in the pedal. Kenneth Leighton's Preces & Responses are representative of his compositional style, combining rhythmic vigor with a free but attractive treatment of dissonance. The Magnificat & Nunc dimittis was written for the dedication of a new organ in Jesus College, Oxford, by the Welsh composer William Mathias. Like Leighton, Matthias’ music is characterized by rhythmic vitality and a liberal use of dissonance. Herbert Howells’ Like as the Hart is one of the most beloved works of the Anglican choral repertoire. A setting of Psalm 42, the piece begins with a mysterious melody sung by the lower voices, transitions to a quicker and more agitated middle section, and finally reprises the opening theme, this time with a soprano descant. Today’s postlude is based on the chorale “O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid” (O sorrow, o pain of my heart). In addition to composing, Ethel Smyth was a leading figure in the English women’s suffrage movement. Her prelude and fugue on “O Traurigkeit” is closely modeled on Brahms’s prelude and fugue on the same tune.

VOLUNTARY Jacques van Oortmerssen (1950 – 2015) INTROIT: The duteous day now closeth Heinrich Isaac Harmonization by J.S. Bach The duteous day now closeth, each flower and tree reposeth, shade creeps o’er wild and wood: let us, as night is falling, on God our Maker calling, give thanks to him, the Giver good. Though long our mortal blindness has missed God’s loving-kindness and plunged us into strife; yet when life’s day is over, shall death’s fair night discover the fields of everlasting life.

Following the Introit, all who are able are invited to stand OPENING SENTENCE (said by the Officiant) I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel: my heart teacheth me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall. THE PRECES Kenneth Leighton (1929 – 1988) Officiant: O Lord, open thou our lips. Choir: And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Officiant: O God, make speed to save us. Choir: O Lord, make haste to help us. Officiant: Glory to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; Choir: As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: World without end. Amen. Officiant: Praise ye the Lord. Choir: The Lord’s Name be praised. Following the Preces, all are seated for the Psalm. PSALM 34 Chant by William Crotch (1775 – 1847) 1. I will alway give thanks unto the Lord: his praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3. O praise the Lord with me:

4

and let us magnify his Name together. 4. I sought the Lord, and he heard me: yea, he delivered me out of all my fear. 5. They had an eye unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. 6. Lo, the poor crieth, and the Lord heareth him: yea, and saveth him out of all his troubles. 7. The angel of the Lord tarrieth round about them that fear him: and delivereth them. 15. The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous: and his ears are open unto their prayers. 16. The countenance of the Lord is against them that do evil: to root out the remembrance of them from the earth. 17. The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth them: and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 20. He keepeth all his bones: so that not one of them is broken. 21. But misfortune shall slay the ungodly: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. 22. The Lord delivereth the souls of his servants: and all they that put their trust in him shall not be destitute. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, And to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: World without end. Amen.

FIRST LESSON Jeremiah 6:9-15 hus says the LORD of hosts: Glean thoroughly as a vine the remnant of T Israel; like a grape-gatherer, pass your hand again over its branches. To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? See, their ears are closed, they cannot listen. The word of the LORD is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it. But I am full of the wrath of the LORD; I am weary of holding it in. Pour it out on the children in the street, and on the gatherings of young men as well; both husband and wife shall be taken, the old folk and the very aged. their houses shall be turned over to others, their fields and wives together; for I will stretch out my hand against the inhabitants of the land,

5 says the LORD. For from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is greedy for unjust gain; and from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely. They have treated the wound of my people carelessly, saying, ‘Peace, peace’, when there is no peace. They acted shamefully, they committed abomination; yet they were not ashamed, they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time that I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says the LORD. At the end of the Lesson, the Reader says The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Following the First Lesson, all stand for the Office Hymn

OFFICE HYMN: Wilt thou forgive that sin where I begun? Donne 1 Wilt thou forgive that sin, where I begun, which is my sin, though it were done before? Wilt thou forgive those sins through which I run, and do run still, though still I do deplore? When thou hast done, thou hast not done, for I have more. 2 Wilt thou forgive that sin, by which I won others to sin, and made my sin their door? Wilt thou forgive that sin which I did shun a year or two, but wallowed in a score? When thou hast done, thou hast not done, for I have more. 3 I have a sin of fear that when I’ve spun my last thread, I shall perish on the shore; swear by thyself, that at my death thy Son shall shine as he shines now, and heretofore. And having done that, thou hast done, I fear no more. Following the Hymn, all are seated for the Magnificat

MAGNIFICAT (Jesus College Service) William Mathias (1934 – 1992) My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold

6

from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. SECOND LESSON Mark 5:1-20 hey came to the other side of the lake, to the country of the Gerasenes. And T when he had stepped out of the boat, immediately a man out of the tombs with an unclean spirit met him. He lived among the tombs; and no one could restrain him any more, even with a chain; for he had often been restrained with shackles and chains, but the chains he wrenched apart, and the shackles he broke in pieces; and no one had the strength to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always howling and bruising himself with stones. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him; and he shouted at the top of his voice, ‘What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.’ For he had said to him, ‘Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!’ Then Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ He replied, ‘My name is Legion; for we are many.’ He begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. Now there on the hillside a great herd of swine was feeding; and the unclean spirits begged him, ‘Send us into the swine; let us enter them.’ So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the lake, and were drowned in the lake. The swineherds ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came to see what it was that had happened. They came to Jesus and saw the demoniac sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the legion; and they were afraid. Those who had seen what had happened to the demoniac and to the swine reported it. Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their neighbourhood. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him. But Jesus refused, and said to him, ‘Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy he has shown you.’ And he went away and

7 began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed. At the end of the Lesson, the Reader says The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

NUNC DIMITTIS (Jesus College Service) Mathias Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED Said by ALL, standing I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sin, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE SALUTATION, LORD’S PRAYER & SUFFRAGES Leighton Officiant: The Lord be with you; Choir: and with thy spirit.

8

Officiant: Let us pray: Choir: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Choir: Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name. thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Officiant: O Lord, show thy mercy upon us; Choir: and grant us thy salvation. Officiant: O Lord, save the state; Choir: and mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Officiant: Endue thy ministers with righteousness; Choir: and make thy chosen people joyful. Officiant: O Lord, save thy people; Choir: and bless thine inheritance. Officiant: Give peace in our time, O Lord; Choir: because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. Officiant: O God, make clean our hearts within us; Choir: and take not thy Holy Spirit from us. THE COLLECTS (sung by the Officiant) Almighty God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior.

9

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. ANTHEM: Like as the hart (all are seated) Herbert Howells (1892 – 1983) Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, so longeth my soul after thee, O God. My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for the living God: when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? My tears have been my meat day and night: while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy God? THE PRAYER OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM (said by the Officiant) Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well- beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. THE GRACE (begun by the Officiant) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen. CLOSING HYMN King’s Lynn 1. At the Name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now; ’tis the Father’s pleasure we should call him Lord who from the beginning was the mighty Word. 2. In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true; crown him as your Captain in temptation’s hour; let his will enfold you in its light and power.

10

3 Christians, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father’s glory o’er the earth to reign; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now.

VOLUNTARY: Prelude & Fugue on “O Traurigkeit” Dame Ethel Smyth (1858 – 1944)
