Robert Service’s passion for Russia began when he was a and literature student at Cambridge, where he reveled in the chance to read Dostoevsky and Solzhenitsyn in their native language. He then switched to Soviet politics for his master’s and to the history of the USSR for his doctorate. As an exchange program student in Leningrad in the mid-1970s he also became a fan of Russian popular music. “No other country offers such a vibrant diversity of culture and aspiration,” explains Professor Service.

His research interests cover Russian history and politics in all its aspects, from the late 19th century to the present day. His biography of Leon Trotsky won the 2009 Duff Cooper “An excellently prize awarded to the best work of history, biography, political science or poetry published in English or French. He is currently working on a book about the end of the Cold War, conceived, which will be a counterpart to his recently published Spies and Commissars: Russia smoothly run and the West in the Bolshevik Revolution. During our program, Professor Service will discuss the workings (and nonworkings) of communism, Russian authors of the last two journey to centuries, and the future of Russian politics and leaders. fascinating — Fellow, St. Antony’s College, Oxford University — Senior fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University places....” — MA and PhD, government, University of Essex; Lois Miller, ’62, MA, modern language, University of Cambridge Imperial Russian Waterways, 2010
