Technologie & Materialien,Zerspanung, Schlei 6 Diamantenkunde 1/2008Serie A visit to Mirny The first thing which came to my attention when I looked out of the small window of the Alrosa air plane was an enormous crater, the famous „big hole“ of Mirny. The crater is spiralling down to a depth that is hardly visible from above, and I learn later that it is in the range of !"! meters. The „big hole“ is what remained of the Mir pipe, the first kimberlite pipe that was worked for diamonds in Yakutia, from #$!% till "&&'. It is one of the largest pipes, both in Russia and worldwide. FEATURE AR ICLES GEOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOMONOSOV DIAMOND DEPOSIT, NORTHWESTERN RUSSIA Karen V. Smit and Russell Shor The Siberian craton in Russia hosts many of the country’s famous diamond mines. The Lomonosov mine, however, occurs within the boundaries of a different craton—the Baltic shield, most of which lies in Eu- rope. Unlike many diamond mines in South Africa, Canada, and Siberia, the Lomonosov deposit is not in a stable Archean geologic setting. Similar to the Argyle diamond mine in Australia, Lomonosov is in a younger Proterozoic orogenic (or mountain-building) region. Fancy pink diamonds at both these lo- calities likely relate to these Proterozoic tectonic processes.
