MOSCOW PRE-TOUR EXTENSIONS RUSSIA Moscow is full of interesting sites. More, in fact, than the CSO patron tour permits. For those patrons arriving early, here is a sampling of activities in and around Moscow. If you are arriving early, please indicate which of the following activities might appeal to you. After the booking deadline, when we know how many patrons plan to arrive early, we’ll offer some options as a group for both the pre- and post-tour extensions. Sergiev Posad. DAY TRIPS OUTSIDE MOSCOW: Sergiev Posad, 1.5 hours drive each way This is essentially the Vatican of the Russian Orthodox Church as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tour the 15th-century lavra (a lavra is the highest rank of Orthodox monastery, and there are only four in all of Russia). Then we have special access into the seminary. Hear the monks’ choir perform, and sit down to lunch and a chat with the resident monks. Russian Space Exploration, 1.5 to two hours drive each way Russia’s space program is alive and well. Tchaikovsky,Two hours drive each way Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky spent the last eight years of his life in the town of Klin. Today’s Tchaikovsky Museum has preserved the composer’s home, where he lived and worked. Here he completed the Sleeping Beauty, the Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky House. Klin. and Symphony No. 6, which he called his “best and most elaborated composition.” It was from this house that he left for his last concert trip to St. Petersburg on 7 October 1893. It was built to celebrate the museum’s 150th anniversary. Here we see exceptional pieces by Kandinsky, Chagall, Malevich, Goncharova, and many others. Cosmonautics Memorial Museum in Moscow. Housed within an enormous monument to the explorers of the cosmos, this museum, which opened in 1981 to mark the 20th anniversary of manned Russian space flight, traces the history of space exploration. Learn about the first interplanetary satellite flights, the Kandinsky’s “Composition VII” at the first dogs in space, and such. State Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val. of Art. This delightful museum showcases a rich collection of Western art that spans the ages, from Boticelli, Bronzino, and Cranach to Rembrandt, Renoir, Gaugin, van Gogh, and Picasso. A stunning look at European painting through the ages. Tchaikovsky Museum in Moscow. This museum was once the apartment of the great Tchaikovsky when he lived in Moscow between 1872 and 1873. Recently renovated and expanded, it is part of the Glinka Museum of Musical Culture. BOLOGNA POST-TOUR EXTENSION ITALY One-Day Post-Tour to Bologna. The patron tour ends in Ravenna, Italy, the morning of Saturday, 28 April. The previous night’s concert begins at 9 p.m. and there is a post-concert dinner, which add up to a very late night. Bologna has the closest international airport to Ravenna, which is about a 75-minute drive from Ravenna. Those interested may extend their tour with a one-day visit and overnight to Bologna, where you are conveniently located to “The Red Vineyard,” by Vincent van Gogh. catch an early-morning flight home on Sunday, 29 April. Pushkin Museum, Moscow Late morning, we drive to Bologna. Upon arrival, sit down to lunch. Next, take a walking tour of the city, which is known for its towers and porticoes. Bologna’s historical downtown is magnificently preserved, thanks to a careful restoration and conservation policy set in place in the 1970s. In 2006, UNESCO declared Bologna a “city of music.” Our walking tour includes the Basilica of San Petronio, fifth largest church in the world; the city library, with manuscripts dating back to the 1400s; the Internazionale e Biblioteca della Musica, a music museum featuring manuscripts, paintings, and antique instruments; the city’s market street; and our favorite food shops. Tchaikovsky Museum, Moscow. Take the evening at your leisure. We stay at the delightful Grand Hotel Majestic Già Baglioni, the oldest and most prestigious hotel in Bologna, in the heart of the city. The hotel’s palazzo was designed by Alfonso Torregiani in the early 18th century and commissioned by Cardinal Prospero Lambertini, who later became Pope. The palazzo stands atop an ancient Roman road, part of which can be seen inside the hotel. The next morning, Sunday, 29 April, you can take a 20-minute taxi to the airport to catch your flight home.
