A Timeline of Women at Yale Helen Robertson Gage Becomes the first Woman to Graduate with a Master’S Degree in Public Health
1905 Florence Bingham Kinne in the Pathology Department, becomes the first female instructor at Yale. 1910 First Honorary Degree awarded to a woman, Jane Addams, the developer of the settlement house movement in America and head of Chicago’s Hull House. 1916 Women are admitted to the Yale School of Medicine. Four years later, Louise Whitman Farnam receives the first medical degree awarded to a woman: she graduates with honors, wins the prize for the highest rank in examinations, and is selected as YSM commencement speaker. 1919 A Timeline of Women at Yale Helen Robertson Gage becomes the first woman to graduate with a Master’s degree in Public Health. SEPTEMBER 1773 1920 At graduation, Nathan Hale wins the “forensic debate” Women are first hired in the college dining halls. on the subject of “Whether the Education of Daughters be not without any just reason, more neglected than that Catherine Turner Bryce, in Elementary Education, of Sons.” One of his classmates wrote that “Hale was becomes the first woman Assistant Professor. triumphant. Secretary I SUNDAY SCHOOL BOARD OF THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE FOREWORD Southern Baptists have made history in the collection of data on churches during 1950. For the first time since the Department of Sur vey, Statistics, and Information was formed in 1920, a report has been received from every association for work done in the churches during the current year. This record involves work done by multiplied thou sands of organization’s secretaries and church clerks. Primary credit must go to the work done by the associational clerks and the state statistical officers. Reports received from Southern Baptist churches are classified in four different groups: open country churches; churches located in villages of less than 500 population; churches located in towns with Copyright, 1951 500-2500 population; and churches located in cities with more than BROADMAN PRESS 2500 population. These classifications are also separated according to Nashville, Tennessee the number of preaching services held each month, since experience has shown that there is a positive correlation between the number of service, the location of the*church and the record reported. -

M ARY C HARLOTTE Y . C ARROLL When Marriage Is Too Much: Reviving the Registered Partnership in a Diverse Society abstract. In the years since same-sex marriage’s legalization, many states have repealed their civil union and domestic partnership laws, creating a marriage-or-nothing binary for couples in search of relationship recognition. This Note seeks to add to the growing call for legal recognition of partnership pluralism by illustrating why marriage is not the right fit—or even a realistic choice—for all couples. It highlights in particular the life-or-death consequences matrimony can bring for those reliant on government healthcare benefits because of a disability or a need for long- term care. Building upon interview data and a survey of state nonmarital partnership policies, it proposes the creation of a customizable marriage alternative: the registered partnership. author. David Bentley, Ph.D., is Chief Scientist for Illumina’s Sequencing business. His major research interest is the study of human sequence variation. He was previously Head of Human Genetics and founding member of the Board of Management at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute where he played leading roles in the Institute’s contribution to the human genome referencing sequence, the SNP Consortium and the International HapMap Project. Yale and the Vietnam War Page 1 of 21 Presented at the 2nd Meeting of the 1999-2000 Year October 19,1999 Gaddis Smith Yale and the Vietnam War A DRAFT NOT TO BE QUOTED OR CITED WITHOUT THE AUTHOR'S PERMISSION In 1919 President Arthur Twining Hadley said that the men of Yale who had died in the Great War were the fortunate ones, for they had fulfilled the ultimate purpose of the University in service to the nation. A generation later, on the eve of the entry of the United States into World War II, faculty, students, and alumni were as divided on the issue of isolation or intervention as were the American people and Congress. But President Charles Seymour took sides on behalf of the University. He deplored student isolationism and committed Yale to support all measures necessary to defeat Nazi Germany. There was no place in his mind for personal or institutional neutrality. Pearl Harbor, of course, ended all debate. Yale became a military camp until 1945. The Korean War was relatively brief and had less impact than the Yale administration feared, but once again hardly anyone suggested institutional neutrality in that conflict or more broadly in the Cold War. In 1951 President A. Whitney Griswold defended liberal education as essential preparation for lieutenants who knew why they were fighting.1 Until the mid-1960s the Cold War consensus reigned in the classroom, the research and writing of faculty concerned with international relations, and in the minds of almost everyone connected with Yale. This was the university of Henry L Stimson's commitment to "active duty in peace and war", of Secretary of State Dean Acheson who was "present at the creation" of American world power, and of the pioneer geopolitical "realist" Professor Nicholas Spykman. -

O'Leary announced I her Openness Initiative. As part of this initiative, the Department of Energy Iundertook an effort to identify and catalog historical documents on radiation experiments that had used human subjects. The Office of Human Radiation Ex- I periments coordinated the Department's search for records about these experi- ments. An enormous volume of historical records has been located. Many of these records were disorganized; often poorly cataloged, if at all; and scattered across I the country in holding areas, archives, and records centers. The Department has produced a roadmap to the large universe of pertinent in- I formation: Human Radiation Experiments: The Department of Energy Roadmap to the Story and the Records (DOE/EH-0445, February 1995). The collected documents are also accessible through the Internet World Wide Web I under http: //www. ohre. doe. gov. The passage of time, the state of ex- isting records, and the fact that some decisionmaking processes were never documented in written form, caused the Department to consider other means to I supplement the documentary record. In September 1994, the Office of Human Radiation Experiments, in collaboration I with Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, began an oral history project to fulfill this goal. The project involved interviewing researchers and others with firsthand knowledge of either the human radiation experimentation that occurred during the I Cold War or the institutional context in which such experimentation took place.
