Variable frequencies, variable and value labels, and missing values have been checked. If neces- sary, the data have been anonymised. The original data creators and the archive bear no responsibility for any results or interpretations arising from the reuse of the data. The codebook contains information on data content, structure and data collection, and includes a list of publications wholly or in part based on the data, according to publication informa- tion received by the FSD. The second part of the codebook contains information on variables: question texts, response options, and frequencies. The third part contains indexes. Variable distributions presented in this codebook have been generated from the SPSS files. Dis- tribution tables present variable values, frequencies (n), frequency percentages (%), and valid percentages (v. %) which take into account missing data. All distributions are unweighted. If the data contain weight variables, these will be found at the end of the variables list. In some cases frequency distributions have been substituted by descriptive statistics. Categorised responses to open-ended questions are not always included in the codebook. Distributions may contain missing data. The note "System missing (SYSMIS)" refers to missing observations (e.g. a re- spondent has not answered all questions) whereas "Missing (User missing)" refers to data the user has defined as missing. For example, the user may decide to code answer alternatives ’don’t want to say’ or ’can’t say’ as missing data. The codebook may contain attached files, the most common one being the questionnaire. Abstract The dataset is the first part of a survey studying voter opinions on polling, and the impact of polling on the 1994 presidential elections in Finland. The respondents were asked by what name they call polls measuring support for the presidential candidates and political parties. Next questions asked when they had voted in the first round of the presidential elections, how often they had seen poll ratings of different candidates in the media, and whether they had discussed these ratings with others. Views on to what extent polls affected people’s choice of candidate were studied. Several questions focused on the impact of polls on the respondents’ decision to vote in the elections, voting tactics, and choice of candidate. The respondents were asked how reliable they had thought the polls published before the first round were. The respondents’ voting behaviour was studied by asking whether they had voted in the first round, whom they had voted for, whether they had voted in advance in the second round, and how certain they were that they would vote for the candidate they supported at the time of the interview. They were also asked what party they would vote for if the parliamentary elections were held at that time. Background variables included the respondent’s gender, age, basic and vocational education, economic activity, province of residence, and municipality type. 1.3 Structure and collection of the data Country: Finland Geographic coverage: Finland Analysis or observation unit type: Individual Universe: Enfranchised Finnish population living in Finland. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Essays in Political Economy A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science by Imil Nurutdinov 2019 © Copyright by Imil Nurutdinov 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Essays in Political Economy by Imil Nurutdinov Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Leslie Nicole Johns, CoChair Professor Ronald L. Rogowski, CoChair This dissertation studies the determinants of political institutions and their impact on economic development in various historical contexts. The first chapter focuses on the Catholic Church, which for centuries determined the political, economic, and cultural development of Europe and was the greatest and most enduring rival to the nationstate. Why did the Church’s power decline earlier in Northwestern Europe than in the East and South? I argue that to a large extent the differential political influence of the Church can be explained by differential demand for collective security in the face of the possible invasion by the militarily superior “infidels.” Catholic states had to cooperate to achieve military success. To mitigate the interstate collective action problem, Catholic states voluntarily delegated legal and fiscal authorities to a common nonterritorial jurisdiction, which was the Church. States in Northwestern Europe had lower demand for protection against the “infidels,” therefore, commitment to the Church was weaker. To measure the Church’s political power across time and space at the subnational (diocesan) level, I have assembled a novel dataset on appointments of bishops between 1198 and 1517, the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

Finland constitutes no exception to this general rule. In her case it is a fact, however, that the framework of her political · structure, as molded by centuries of experience and development, proved capable of withstAnding the strain and hardships of two wars. The Constitution she gave herself in 1919 stands intrinsically intact, and the Finnish democracy faces the postwar tasks of rehabilitation convinced of the soundness of its principles. Two treaties agreed upon by Finland and the nations against whom she found herself engaged in war, viz. the Peace Treaty signed in Moscow on March t2, 19,0, and the Peace Treaty signed in Paris on February 10, t9,7, govern Finland's position as an independent republic. The Finnish people· see in a faithful and scrupulous fulfilment on their part of the obligations laid down in these documents a guarantee for Finland's future existence and security. First and foremost, I would like to mention Vilho NIITEMAA, Professor Emeritus of General History at the University of Turku, who originally guided me to a topic of research which has since then dominated my activities in many ways. In conjunction with Professor Niitemaa's Migration History Project, I have had a number of opportunities to carry out research in the United States and Canada. These visits have also given me the personal occasion to interiorize those factors making to diminish or increase the probability of return, towards which each and every migrant was forced to clarify his stance, and which form the central theme in my dissertation.

Re: Finland In 1997, the number of the provinces (Finnish: läänit) in Finland was reduced from twelve to six. The relocation notes in the current development in Edition 23 of the Dewey Decimal Classification reflects this change. Also in 1997, nineteen regions (Finnish: maakunta) were created as second-order administrative units. On January 1, 2010, the provinces were abolished. The regions are now first-order administrative units.
