Re: Finland In 1997, the number of the provinces (Finnish: läänit) in Finland was reduced from twelve to six. The relocation notes in the current development in Edition 23 of the Dewey Decimal Classification reflects this change. Also in 1997, nineteen regions (Finnish: maakunta) were created as second-order administrative units. On January 1, 2010, the provinces were abolished. The regions are now first-order administrative units. Unfortunately, the embassy did not have such a map, and advised us to use the maps we had identified on the web. The maps given in the appendix were used to determine the boundaries of the regions and in which former province they were located. The form of the name of 2 the region was first based on the form given on the Finland page in the CIA’s World Factbook. We then asked the National Library of Finland to review the draft, with special attention to the form of name. The form of name given in the exhibit is that approved by Ms. Eeva Karki, Librarian at the National Library of Finland. Because most of the development is new, there is no underlining. —489 7 Finland See also —16334 for Gulf of Finland —489 71 Southern Finland Class here former Southern Finland province (Etelä-Suomen lääni) —489 711 South Karelia region (Etelä-Karjalan maakunta) —489 713 Kymenlaakso region (Kymenlaakson maakunta) —489 715 Päijät-Häme region (Päijät-Hämeen maakunta) —489 716 Tavastia Proper region (Kanta- Hämeen maakunta) —489 718 Uusimaa region (Uudenmaan maakunta) Including Helsinki —489 72 Åland region (Ahvenanmaan maakunta) Class here former Åland province (Ahvenanmaan lääni); Åland Islands —489 73 Western Finland Class here former Western Finland province (Länsi-Suomen lääni) —489 731 Finland Proper region (Varsinais-Suomen maakunta) —489 733 Satakunta region (Satakunnan maakunta) 3 —489 734 Ostrobothnia region (Pohjanmaan maakunta) —489 735 Central Ostrobothnia region (Keski-Pohjanmaan maakunta) —489 736 South Ostrobothnia region (Etelä-Pohjanmaan maakunta) —489 737 Pirkanmaa region (Pirkanmaan maakunta) —489 738 Central Finland region (Keski-Suomen maakunta) —489 75 Eastern Finland Class here former Eastern Finland province (Itä-Suomen lääni) —489 762 North Savo region (Pohjois-Savon maakunta) —489 765 South Savo region (Etelä-Savon maakunta) —489 768 North Karelia region (Pohjois-Karjalan maakunta) —489 76 North central Finland Class here former Oulu province (Oulun lääni) —489 763 Kainuu region (Kainuun maakunta) —489 767 North Ostrobothnia region (Pohjois-Pohjanmaan maakunta) —489 77 Lappi region (Lapin maakunta, Lapland) Class here former Lappi province (Lapin lääni) Use of this notation for comprehensive works on Sápmi (Lapland) discontinued; class in —48 4 Appendixes Information from the CIA’s World Factbook – Finland page https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/fi.html 19 regions (maakunnat, singular - maakunta (Finnish); landskapen, singular - landskapet (Swedish)); Aland (Swedish), Ahvenanmaa (Finnish); Etela -Karjala (Finnish), Sodra Karelen (Swedish) [South Karelia]; Etela -Pohjanmaa (Finnish), Sodra Osterbotten (Swedish) [South Ostrobothnia]; Etela -Savo (Finnish), Sodra Savolax (Swedish) [South Savo]; Kanta-Hame (Finnish), Egentliga Tavastland (Swedish); Kainuu (Finnish), Kajanaland (Swedish); Keski-Pohjanmaa (Finnish), Mellersta Osterbotten (Swedish) [Central Ostrobothnia]; Keski -Suomi (Finnish), Mellersta Finland (Swedish) [Central Finland]; Kymenlaakso (Finnish), Kymmenedalen (Swedish); Lappi (Finnish), Lappland (Swedish); Paijat -Hame (Finnish), Paijanne-Tavastland (Swedish); Pirkanmaa (Finnish), Birkaland (Swedish) [Tampere]; Pohjanmaa (Finnish), Osterbotten (Swedish) [Ostrobothnia]; Pohjois-Karjala (Finnish), Norra Karelen (Swedish) [North Karelia]; Pohjois - Pohjanmaa (Finnish), Norra Osterbotten (Swedish) [North Ostrobothnia]; Pohjois - Savo (Finnish), Norra Savolax (Swedish) [North Savo]; Satakunta (Finnish and Swedish); Uusimaa (Finnish), Nyland (Swedish) [Newland]; Varsinais-Suomi (Finnish), Egentliga Finland (Swedish) [Finland Proper] Information from Taru Spiegel, the Finnish expert in the European Reading Room at the Library of Congress The following has the names of the AVIs in a variety of languages. sv=Swedish, Finland’s other official language. http://www.kotus.fi/files/1825/toponymic_guidelines.pdf UNITED NATIONS GROUP OF EXPERTS ON GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES 22nd session, New York, 20-29 April 2004 Item 17 of the provisional agenda TOPONYMIC GUIDELINES FOR MAP EDITORS AND OTHER EDITORS FINLAND Fourth, revised edition 2004* (v. 4.5, March 2011**) 6 ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS 6.3 Regions Since February 1997, the municipalities of Finland have been grouped into twenty regions (fi maakunta, sv landskap); see Map 2.
