General Alexandre Gefen, Réparer le monde: la littérature française face au XXIe siècle, Corti, 2017, 392 pp., argues that contemporary French literature has undergone a therapeutic turn, with both writing and reading now conceived in terms of healing, helping, and doing good. G. defends this thesis with extraordinary thoroughness as he examines the turn’s various guises: as objects of literature’s care here feature the self and its fractures; trauma, both individual and collective; illness, mental and physical; mourning and forgetfulness, personal and historical; and endangered bonds, with humans and beyond, on local and global scales. This amounts to what G. calls a new ‘paradigme clinique’ and, like any paradigm shift, this one appears replete with contradictions, tensions, and opponents, not least owing to the residual influence of preceding paradigms; G.’s analysis is especially impressive when unpicking the ways in which contemporary writers negotiate their sustained attachments to a formal, intransitive conception of literature, and/or more overtly revolutionary political projects. His thesis is supported by an enviable breadth of reference: G. lays out the diverse intellectual, technological, and socioeconomic histories at work in this development, and touches on close to 200 contemporary writers. Given the broad, synthetic nature of the work’s endeavour, individual writers/works are rarely discussed for longer than a page, and though G.’s commentary is always insightful, specialists on particular authors or social/historical trends will surely find much to work with and against here. -

Rosalyn Drexler: Likes a little humor with her humanity AMY SUTHERLAND JUNE 10, 2016 Artist, novelist, playwright, critic, Rosalyn Drexler obviously never felt compelled to limit herself to one genre over the past six decades. That is why she’s won an Obie Award and an Emmy Award as well as created enough paintings and collages to warrant a retrospective. If you missed the recent exhibit of Drexler’s pop art, “Who Does She Think She Is?,” organized by Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum, the show travels to the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y., this fall. The exhibit catalogue is available from the Rose. BOOKS: What are you reading currently? DREXLER: I was re-reading Kafka’s short story “A Hunger Artist,” and I also just read part of Joan Didion’s “After Henry,” a collection of essays dedicated to her longtime editor Henry Robbins at Simon and Schuster who died in 1979. BOOKS: Who are some of your favorite authors? DREXLER: Balzac, whom I read as a kid. I found out about sex by reading his “Droll Stories.” I didn’t understand the book but thought it was funny, with what these people were up to. I very much enjoyed Gabriel García Márquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Te last book of his I read, “Memories of My Melancholy Whores,” however, was slow and not as exciting as his other stuf. I love Nathanael West’s “Te Day of the Locust” and “Miss Lonelyhearts,” and Samuel Beckett’s “Endgame.” I never stopped crying afer reading that because at the end one of the characters climbs a ladder and looks out the window and reports he sees nothing. -

NIKA Maklena University of Tirana, Albania E-mail: [email protected] Received 26.01.2015; Accepted 10.02. 2015 Abstract Transplanting the surrealist movement and literature in Greece and feedback from the critics and philological and journalistic circles of the time is of special importance in the history of Modern Greek Literature. The Greek critics and readers who were used to a traditional, patriotic and strictly rule-conforming literature would find it hard to accept such a kind of literature. The modern Greek surrealist writers, in close cooperation mainly with French surrealist writers, would be subject to harsh criticism for their surrealist, absurd, weird and abstract productivity. All this reaction against the transplanting of surrealism in Greece caused the so called “surrealist scandal”, one of the biggest scandals in Greek letters. Introduction When Andre Breton published the First Surrealist Manifest in 1924, Greece had started to produce the first modern works of its literature. Everything modern arrives late in Greece due to a number of internal factors (poetic collection of Giorgios Seferis “Mythistorima” (1935) is considered as the first modern work in Greek literature according to Αlexandros Argyriou, History of Greek Literature and its perception over years between two World Wars (1918-1940), volume Α, Kastanioti Publications, Athens 2002, pp. 534-535). Time, Elements and the Phoenix Hour in Lives and Poetry of Nobel Laureates and their Celestial Twins. Elizabetha Levin Haifa, Israel E-mail: [email protected] We see that human creativity and innovation can be understood as the amplification of laws of nature… Ilya Prigogine {NL, Air} Abstract. In our times both the works and the biographies of the Nobel laureates {NL} are accessible to empirical study. Their biographic materials portray distinguished personalities as real people with their faults and weaknesses. Such biographic studies become available mainly because in our epoch the quality and quantity of psychological observation have increased dramatically. By opening the books of their own life stories, the Nobel laureates invite us to witness the circumstances of their growth and to gain a better understanding of the limits of free will and of "Zeitgeist" dynamics. Assuming that poetry is an even more valuable source of authors' attitudes towards life than their respective autobiographies, the Nobel laureates in Literature who were awarded their prizes explicitly for poetry, constitute the most informative group for biographical research. Furthermore, according to Alfred Nobel's will (1895), the poetry of the laureates should be also "the most outstanding work in an ideal direction." The ability of such laureates to inspire entire societies makes them attractive for historical research. This paper is a pioneer venture into temporology. It seamlessly blends three different types of time: calendar times, the primordial cycles of the elements and the factor of birth-time (the Theta-factor). To make this fusion possible, this essay opens with a brief Introduction written in four parts, each part being a thumbnail sketch of one of the following basic temporal aspects: definitions of time, the four elements, the Effect of the Celestial Twins (ECT) and the model of the Phoenix Clock. -

Appendix B: A Literary Heritage I. Suggested Authors, Illustrators, and Works from the Ancient World to the Late Twentieth Century All American students should acquire knowledge of a range of literary works reflecting a common literary heritage that goes back thousands of years to the ancient world. In addition, all students should become familiar with some of the outstanding works in the rich body of literature that is their particular heritage in the English- speaking world, which includes the first literature in the world created just for children, whose authors viewed childhood as a special period in life. The suggestions below constitute a core list of those authors, illustrators, or works that comprise the literary and intellectual capital drawn on by those in this country or elsewhere who write in English, whether for novels, poems, nonfiction, newspapers, or public speeches. The next section of this document contains a second list of suggested contemporary authors and illustrators—including the many excellent writers and illustrators of children’s books of recent years—and highlights authors and works from around the world. In planning a curriculum, it is important to balance depth with breadth. As teachers in schools and districts work with this curriculum Framework to develop literature units, they will often combine literary and informational works from the two lists into thematic units. Exemplary curriculum is always evolving—we urge districts to take initiative to create programs meeting the needs of their students. The lists of suggested authors, illustrators, and works are organized by grade clusters: pre-K–2, 3–4, 5–8, and 9– 12.
