El concepto, lanzado por un grupo de 44 escritores a través del manifiesto publicado en Le Monde des Livres el 16 de marzo de 2007, dio lugar a la aparición del libro con el mismo título formado por un conjunto de artículos de algunos de los firmantes del manifiesto. Tres años después los editores de esta obra, Michel Le Bris y Jean Rouaud, publicaron un segundo volumen con el título de Je est un autre: Pour une identité-monde. Sus principales novedades radican en la redefinición de conceptos como el de francofonía, identidad, alteridad e incluso el propio concepto de mundo en su relación con la literatura. Starring Hitler! Adolf Hitler as the Main Character in Twentieth-First Century French Fiction Abstract Adolf Hitler has remained a prominent figure in popular culture, often portrayed as either the personification of evil or as an object of comedic ridicule. Although Hitler has never belonged solely to history books, testimonials, or documentaries, he has recently received a great deal of attention in French literary fiction. This article reviews three recent French novels by established authors: La part de l’autre (The Alternate Hypothesis) by Emmanuel Schmitt, Lui (Him) by Patrick Besson and La jeunesse mélancolique et très désabusée d’Adolf Hitler (Adolf Hitler’s Depressed and Very Disillusioned Youth) by Michel Folco; all of which belong to the Twenty-First Century French literary trend of focusing on Second World War perpetrators instead of their victims. -

A re-reading of the manifesto allows us to interrogate the supplementary logic (in Derrida’s term) between Francophone literatures and French literature through analyzing the controversies around the manifesto and some French literary awards of the last decade. This reconstruction allows us to examine the possibilities and limits of the notions of Francophonie and world-literature in French. Finally, this overall critical approach is demonstrated in the analysis of Atiq Rahimi’s novel Syngué sabour. Pierre de patience. Cruz, B.A., M.A. Denton, Texas May, 1996 Cruz, Richard A., Andre Malraux: The Anticolonial and Antifascist Years. Doctor of Philosophy (History), May, 1996, 281 pp., 175 titles. This dissertation provides an explanation of how Andr6 Malraux, a man of great influence on twentieth century European culture, developed his political ideology, first as an anticolonial social reformer in the 1920s, then as an antifascist militant in the 1930s. Almost all of the previous studies of Malraux have focused on his literary life, and most of them are rife with errors. This dissertation focuses on the facts of his life, rather than on a fanciful recreation from his fiction. The major sources consulted are government documents, such as police reports and dispatches, the newspapers that Malraux founded with Paul Monin, other Indochinese and Parisian newspapers, and Malraux's speeches and interviews. Other sources include the memoirs of Clara Malraux, as well as other memoirs and reminiscences from people who knew Andre Malraux during the 1920s and the 1930s. The dissertation begins with a survey of Malraux's early years, followed by a detailed account of his experiences in Indochina. -

Chapel Hill 2018 Approved by: Dominique Fisher Lydie Moudileno Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja Donald Reid Jessica Tanner © 2018 Angela Lynn Ritter ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Angela Lynn Ritter: Exile’s Shifting Narrative: Disassociation, Co-habitation, and Intrusion in French Literature’s Corporeal Spaces (Under the direction of Dominique Fisher) Migration has touched French-speaking countries and has inspired a large body of literature recounting migrant experiences in the francophone world. Much of the scholarship on this literature has focused on questions of exile and foreignness in relation to geographical border-crossing as well as on France’s policies toward immigrants in relation to philosophies of hospitality. Yet, authors are also thinking about “home” in ways that transcend geopolitical borders. My dissertation, “Exile’s Shifting Narrative: Disassociation, Co-habitation, and Intrusion in French Literature’s Corporeal Spaces,” examines a set of creative works that displace and theorize the politics of exile and of welcome in terms of the borders of the human body. Considering contemporary French and francophone literature, performance, and film by authors Claire Denis, Wajdi Mouawad, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Marie NDiaye whose works are linked through their staging of dispossessed bodies, my dissertation offers a reconsideration of what it means to have or own a body, demonstrates the blurred boundaries between the Self and the Other, and reveals the possibility of being exiled from one’s own body or to someone else’s body. -

ARC OF THE ABSENT AUTHOR: THOMAS PYNCHON’S TRAJECTORY FROM ENTROPY TO GRACE A Dissertation Submitted to the Department of English and German Philology In partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of English Philology Matthew Clayton Cissell December 2016 Director: María Felisa López Liquete Co-director: Ángel Chaparro Sainz (c)2017 MATTHEW CLAYTON CISSELL Abstract The central thesis of this dissertation is that Thomas Pynchon has come to occupy a specific position in the field of literature and that this can be seen in his latest novel, Against the Day , in which he is not so much writing about the past or even the present, but about what the present can become, about where it might be driven. Pynchon is self-consciously exploring the politics in the discursive field in which his book is situated, using the fin-de-siècle to highlight the ways that the present is geared toward catastrophe and that people, in a dans macabre , hurl themselves toward that endgame. The theoretical view and methodology behind my analysis of the novel draws to a great extent on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, specifically his sociological literary analysis. This sets an academic precedent in studies of Pynchon’s novels but it also requires applying an approach that has several necessary and onerous steps. In order to see how the social space of the novel is a refracted image of the author’s own social world one must analyse the field of power, after that the literary field and the positions of agents, next the space of possibilities, all of which help one understand the genesis of the author’s habitus and thus his trajectory and the creative project that develops. -
