It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Superman has gone by many names over the years, but one thing has remained the same. He has always stood for what’s best about humanity, all of our potential for terrible destructive acts, but also our choice to not act on the level of destruction we could wreak. Superman was first created in 1933 by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, the writer and artist respectively. His first appearance was in Action Comics #1, and that was the beginning of a long and illustrious career for the Man of Steel. In his unmistakable blue suit with red cape, and the stylized red S on his chest, the figure of Superman has become one of the most recognizable in the world. The original Superman character was a bald telepathic villain that was focused on world domination. It was like a mix of Lex Luthor and Professor X. Superman’s powers include incredible strength, the ability to fly. X-ray vision, super speed, invulnerability to most attacks, super hearing, and super breath. He is nearly unstoppable. However, Superman does have one weakness, Kryptonite. When exposed to this radioactive element from his home planet, he becomes weak and helpless. Superman’s alter ego is mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent. He lives in the city of Metropolis and works for the newspaper the Daily Planet. Clark is in love with fellow reporter Lois Lane. -

Introduction Who else writes like …? seeks to help anyone who enjoys reading fiction to expand the number of writers that they read. It is designed to address the dilemma one faces when, having exhausted the output from a particular author, one ponders – “What shall I read next?” The book lists over 1,800 authors, and with each name suggests others who write in a similar way. The number of alternative authors listed for each entry is between three and twelve. Alternative ways of finding suitable reading are through the index of genres, or the list of prize winners at the back of the book. There is also an index to characters in fiction as well as a list of further reading, which includes some useful websites and other fiction guides. The entry for each author offers copious detail to help make a choice. The basis for the initial selection of authors continues to be the most popular according to the Public Lending Right lists, with additions suggested by a number of professional librarians from England, Scotland and Wales. In the main, authors are only included when they have three books to their name and when their novels are easily obtainable from bookshops and libraries. Inclusion is therefore determined by a mixture of objective and subjective criteria. Inevitably some cherished favourites may be omitted as a result, and for this we are sorry. This is the fourth edition of what has now become an established tool for readers and those advising readers in their quest to derive the utmost pleasure from fiction. -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

Denning The Profession of IT An Interview with David Brin on Resiliency Many risks of catastrophic failures of critical infrastructures can be significantly reduced by relatively simple measures to increase resiliency. ANY PEOPLE TODAY are concerned about critical infrastructures such as the electrical network, wa- ter supplies, telephones, Mtransportation, and the Internet. These nerve and bloodlines for society depend on reliable computing, communications, and electrical supply. What would happen if a massive cyber attack or an electromag- netic pulse, or other failure mode took down the electric grid in a way that re- quires many months or even years for re- pair? What about a natural disaster such as hurricane, wildfire, or earthquake that disabled all cellphone communications for an extended period? David Brin, physicist and author, has been worrying about these issues for a long time and consults regularly with companies and federal agen- cies. He says there are many relatively straightforward measures that might greatly increase our resiliency—our ability to bounce back from disaster. I spoke with him about this. Secondary Sources About Elizabeth Cummins PREFACE Scope and Purpose This Judith Merril bibliography includes both primary and secondary works, arranged in categories that are suitable for her career and that are, generally, common to the other bibliographies in the Center for Bibliographic Studies in Science Fiction. Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records. This new online bibliography updates and expands the primary bibliography I published in 2001 (Elizabeth Cummins, “Bibliography of Works by Judith Merril,” Extrapolation, vol. 42, 2001). It also adds a secondary bibliography. However, the reasons for producing a research- based Merril bibliography have been the same for both publications. Published bibliographies of Merril’s work have been incomplete and often inaccurate.
