Advisor: David Armitage Author: Dzavid Dzanic The Civilizing Sea: The Ideological Origins of the French Mediterranean Empire, 1789-1870 Abstract This dissertation examines the religious, diplomatic, legal, and intellectual history of French imperialism in Italy, Egypt, and Algeria between the 1789 French Revolution and the beginning of the French Third Republic in 1870. In examining the wider logic of French imperial expansion around the Mediterranean, this dissertation bridges the Revolutionary, Napoleonic, Restoration (1815-30), July Monarchy (1830-48), Second Republic (1848-52), and Second Empire (1852-70) periods. Moreover, this study represents the first comprehensive study of interactions between imperial officers and local actors around the Mediterranean. -

L’individuo nella crisi della coscienza europea 1 si propone di analizzare, attraverso il filtro della filosofia leibniziana, i fondamenti etico-teorici, che hanno contribuito maggiormente allo sviluppo della «crisi della coscienza europea». Vero è che da alcuni anni, una nuova serie di studi va producendo una sempre migliore conoscenza della cruciale fase di passaggio dalla fine del Seicento ai primi decenni del Settecento 2, l’epoca storica che ha segnato il passaggio dal «mondo chiuso all’universo infinito» 3, e che Paul Hazard definì con una formula felice e, da allora, ampiamente utilizzata, di crisi della coscienza europea, di profonda riformulazione delle categorie concettuali con le quali la cultura del tempo pensava se stessa e il mondo. -

It will be analysed the reportationes of three of his sermons preached on the same liturgical date (Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity Sunday), between 1303 and 1305, which adopts as thema the verse Di- liges proximum tuum sicut te ipsum (Love your neighbour as yourself); a model-sermon of the same liturgical date (c. 1267-1286) by the also Dominican Iacopo de Varazze (1228-1298); and a homily of Augustine of Hippo (354-430) from the early fifth century. Thus, it is stres- sed that Giordano approached the subject both by the use of an Aristotelian-naturalist theory as well as by an Augustinian-voluntarist conception, and it is concluded that the greater emphasis given to the first line of thought is due to its more positive character as regards the city, which allowed a treatment more consistent with the preaching thema and with its internal composition mechanisms. -

This does not mean, however, that conceptions of peace and peacemaking ef- forts do not have their own rich and variegated histories within their own cul- tural contexts. Indeed they do, and this book is a contribution to the history of one of the most significant of them in the Middle Ages. Firmly contextualized in the peacemaking practices of late medieval Italy, with an eye trained on Florence in particular, this study frames the subject in Christian ideas about penitence, which were disseminated in a great whirlwind of mendicant and lay preaching that swept over the Italian peninsula, gathering force in the early thirteenth century. The Oxford English Dictionary offers multiple definitions of “peace,” of which the first five are relevant for our discussion. -

Acta Poloniae Historica 112, 2015 PL ISSN 0001–6892 Zofi a Anuszkiewicz Department of Italian Studies, University of Warsaw THE COMMUNAL IDEOLOGY IN GIOVANNI VILLANI’S NUOVA CRONICA Abstract The essay analyses the ideological message of Giovanni Villani’s Nuova Cronica. Rather than a cohesive theory of good governance, the Florentine chronicler shows scattered images, and in the comments added to the events described he makes explicit what political virtues and inadequacies he considered crucial. Insofar as the earlier books seem to have been inspired by the Roman republican ethos and the Franciscan cult of paucity preached by Dante, he focuses in the fi nal section mostly on the citizens’ internal disposition: their expected attitude would be to hold the Commune in magnanimous love. Villani discerns between the virtues of citizens and those of the rulers, with whom discretion and prudence, rendering political practice effi cient, is paramount; such prudence is easier to fi nd with affl uent burghers than good artisans. The superior value that ought to be sought through the citizens activities, in the area of policymaking and not only, is the grandeur of their Commune. Keywords: Nuova Cronica, Giovanni Villani, political ideology, commune, popolo, good government, Florence I INTRODUCTION The Nuova Cronica by Giovanni Villani (ca. 1275–1348)1, one of the major narrative sources for the general history of the former half of the fourteenth century, is a resource of information that has invari- ably been used an extremely great deal by historians since as far back as the fi fteenth century (in the latter half of the fourteenth, it was visited by other Florence chroniclers2).
