Mayor White’s Message reetings and I hope you and your family are having a won- derful summer. One of our Not-for-Profit organizations has made a sig- Gnificant move into our downtown area and I thought this would be a good time to introduce you to them. Turner Center for the Arts (TCA) has moved into its new location at 7190 Manchester Avenue and all of its programs are in full swing. TCA is a non-profit organization that strives to foster, through creative self-expression, the social, intellectual, emotional and personal growth of individuals with disabilities. Mayor James White TCA meets a unique community need by providing an open art pro- gram for individuals with disabilities. Through TCA’s largest program, the Adult Open Studio, TCA staff and volunteers provide nurturing, structured artistic direction for adults with disabilities, resulting in increased independence for participants. To foster youth independence, TCA has developed the Teen Open Studio, a weekly drop-in studio for teens with and without disabilities. During July and August, an integrated youth art camp is offered. TCA also offers a supported employment program, Lifeworks. This program gives professionally minded artists with disabilities the chance and guidance to create art as a career. TCA staff vigorously seeks out opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally to display, market and sell Lifeworks participants’ artwork. To help dismantle stereotypes and to spread the joy of art, TCA holds frequent in-house and community based exhibitions highlighting the artists’ work. This summer you will find them in the Sutton during the Let Them Eat Art festivities on Friday, July 11th. Here is all of the contact information: Executive Director: Sheila Suderwalla, MSW, sheila@ turnercenterforthearts.org. The Turner Center for the Arts, 7190 Manchester, (314) 781-4440, turnercenterforthearts.org Hope to see you at Let Them Eat Art on July 11th!
