CROSSING THE U.S./CANADIAN BORDER Customs and Immigration Information Proof of citizenship and proof of identity are required. For US and Canadian cit- izens, a passport is strongly recommended and may be required as early as January 1, 2008 for all land and sea border crossings, including Amtrak trains and Amtrak Thruway services. This date is subject to change by government agencies. (A passport is required now for any border crossing by air.) Otherwise, a certified copy of a birth certificate AND current official govern- ment-issued photo identification is required. Citizens of all other countries require a valid passport obtained prior to arrival at the border. Passengers under 18 not traveling with both parents require a notarized letter from any par- ent not present giving permission to cross the border. Admission into either country is solely at the discretion of border authorities, and possession of required documentation in no way guarantees entry. When you make your cross-border reservation with either Amtrak or VIA Rail Canada, your date of birth, country of citizenship, and identification information will be required; this information is provided to border authorities. For further information and to determine what is required for your particular situation, contact the appropriate U.S. or Canadian government offices prior to travel. A brochure containing addi- tional information is also available from Amtrak.
