Global Odyssey: a Bibliography of Travel Literature, 1940 to the Present Global Odyssey: A bibliography of travel literature, 1940 to the present Compiled for the Center for the Study of Global Change by Dawn Childress Indiana University Bloomington 2006 PREFACE The books included in this bibliography represent the body of literature that serves, not just as a guide or roadmap to distant (or not so distant) lands and unfamiliar cultures, but records the impres- sions and experiences of the traveler as he explores a new culture different from his own. These titles offer narrative accounts of the authors’ travels, contributing unique perspectives on the many and diverse cultures throughout the world. The bibliography encompasses travel literature produced from the 1940’s through the present, cov- ering destinations around the globe. Titles are arranged geographically by continent, and where a title covers more than one geographic area, it has been included under each section in which it falls. Titles were selected using a number of print and electronic resources including WorldCat, Encyclo- pedia of Travel Literature, Dictionary of Literary Biography, and a number of other travel literature guides and bibliographies. Signed: Alban Webb ABSTRACT The Second World War had radically changed the focus of the BBC's overseas operation from providing an imperial service in English only, to that of a global broadcaster speaking to the world in over forty different languages. The end of that conflict saw the BBC's External Services, as they became known, re-engineered for a world at peace, but it was not long before splits in the international community caused the postwar geopolitical landscape to shift, plunging the world into a cold war. At the British government's insistence a re-calibration of the External Services' broadcasting remit was undertaken, particularly in its broadcasts to Central and Eastern Europe, to adapt its output to this new and emerging world order.

Since its inception in 1992, through its various yet interrelated programmes, the Foundation continues to appreciate the significant role that art can play in instigating key shifts, and at times, ruptures, in our perception of and engagement with the cultural, social and political conditions of our times.

August 2013 ABSTRACT From the late 1970s on, as competition intensified, British broadcasters searched for new ways to cover the escalating budgets for top-end drama. A common industry practice, overseas co-productions seems the fitting answer for most broadcasters; for the BBC, however, creating programmes that appeal to both national and international markets could mean being in conflict with its public service ethos. • Paine, Ships of the World Bibliography
Bibliography The bibliography includes publication data for every work cited in the source notes of the articles. It should be noted that while there are more than a thousand titles listed, this bibliography can by no means be considered exhaustive. Taken together, the literature on the Titanic, Bounty, and Columbus’s Niña, Pinta, and Santa María comprises hundreds of books and articles. Even a comprehensive listing of nautical bibliographies is impossible here, though four have been especially helpful in researching this book: Bridges, R.C., and P. E. H. Hair. Compassing the Vaste Globe of the Earth: Studies in the History of the Hakluyt Society 1846–1896. London: Hakluyt Society, 1996. Includes a list of the more than 300 titles that have appeared under the society’s imprint. Labaree, Benjamin W. A Supplement (1971–1986) to Robert G. Albion’s Naval & Maritime History: An Annotated Bibliography. 4th edition. Mystic, Conn.: Mystic Seaport Museum, 1988. Law, Derek G. The Royal Navy in World War Two: An Annotated bibliography. London: Greenhill Books, 1988. National Maritime Museum (Greenwich, England). Catalogue of the Library, Vol. 1, Voyages and Travel. London: Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, 1968. There are many interesting avenues of research in maritime history on the Internet. Two have been particularly useful: Maritime History Virtual Archives, owned and administered by Lar Bruzelius.
