3 Introduction

For the fifth consecutive year we offer a list of AUC faculty publications, in an annual series launched by former Vice Provost Ali Hadi in 2006. Prior to that year, there seems to have been only one previous list, compiled during 1982-83 by I. Moyer Hunsberger, who served at the time as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty.

This 2010 Annual Faculty Publications List is the last to be compiled manually by copying, pasting, editing, and formatting items from individual Annual Faculty Reports. This tedious procedure was the only method available until now, but it will be rendered obsolete in a few months’ time by the new faculty database software. Faculty will be filing their 2011 Annual Faculty Reports using this software, and thus it will be easy to generate future Faculty Publications Lists automatically and in the proper format.

For past Faculty Publications Lists, it was left somewhat open as to whether forthcoming publications could also be included. To eliminate ambiguity, the new policy is that the list includes only those publications that actually appeared during calendar year 2010, along with a small scattering of publications from other recent years that were inadvertently omitted from past lists. This should make it easier to take more transparent measurements of the expected increases in faculty productivity from year to year.

That said, quantity is not everything, and mere quantitative output is no substitute for quality in research and creative endeavors. It should also be noted that many productive AUC faculty do not appear on this list due to the simple accident that none of their completed research happened to appear in 2010. Hence, absence from this list should not be construed as an absence of research activity.

We have also added a new feature to this year’s list: a two-page record of which AUC departments had the most publications or creative works in each of the fourteen categories we measure. This list helps bring attention to departments that were especially productive in various areas during 2010.
