Historical Note

The Radio Corporation of America (renamed RCA Corporation in 1969) was best known for its pioneering radio and television development and manufacturing. In addition to consumer electronics, RCA was a major player in the development of electronics for industrial and military applications. It was also prominent in radio and television broadcasting, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, NBC. Originally created in 1919 as a government sponsored radio monopoly, RCA operated until 1986, when it was acquired by GE and broken up.

Joseph Giardina NBC collection, 1937-1953 Biographical Note

Joseph Giardina is the CTO/CEO of a radio frequency services company, DSI RF Systems, Inc., in Somerset, New Jersey. While working atop the Empire State Building in the 1980s he found a variety of abandoned RCA and NBC documents. Giardina donated some of these documents to the David Sarnoff Library.

The Empire State Building has had a transmitting antenna atop its structure since its construction was completed in 1931. The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) began experimental transmissions from the antenna in December of 1931 and by 1939 the first regular television broadcasts were introduced. Engineers from both RCA and NBC were involved in the research, testing, design, and construction of the Empire State Building broadcasting tower. In 1950 RCA Chairman David Sarnoff and New York City Mayor William O'Dwyer drove the first rivets into the base of the Empire State Building's broadcast tower which allowed for the installation of multiple TV/FM antennas. Presently, Empire State Building Broadcasting offers technical facilities to the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut designated market area for radio, television, and point-to-point broadcasting.

Scope and Content

The Joseph Giardina NBC collection is composed of correspondence, invoices, tests, schematics, and notes related to the broadcasting tower on top of the Empire State Building. The collection also contains correspondence and patents related to Armstrong v. Radio Corporation of America and National Broadcasting Company.

Edward O. Johnson papers, 1948-19751983 Biographical Note

Edward O. Johnson was born in West Hartford, Connecticut in 1919. In 1939, he entered the chemical engineering curriculum at Pratt Institute, but left to serve in the Navy during World War II. Johnson's enlistment as an electronic - Page 9- Records of other RCA divisions 2464.80

equipment maintenance chief changed his interests and when his service ended in 1945, he re-entered Pratt, but in electrical, rather than chemical, engineering. After graduating with a B.S.E.E. in 1948, Johnson was hired by RCA Laboratories.

Johnson worked prolifically in the fields of gaseous discharges and semiconductor devices, earning 30 patents, authoring 35 technical papers, and receiving two RCA Outstanding Achievement Awards. He continued his education, taking graduate coursework at Princeton University and completing a year of study at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Johnson was committed to industry standards and he served as chairman for several Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) committees on solid state devices. His achievements, education, and professional service moved him up the organizational ladder, and in 1964 he became manager of Technical Programs, RCA Electronic Components when the semiconductor and tube divisions were combined. Johnson's managerial duties divided his time between the facilities at Harrison, Somerville, and Princeton. In 1975, RCA appointed Johnson as the Director of RCA Research Laboratories in Tokyo, Japan. He left RCA when the Tokyo lab was purchased by Corning Glass Works in 1982, but stayed on as Corning's director until his retirement two years later. He died in Princeton in 1989.

Scope and Content

The Edward O. Johnson papers consist of Johnson's research, correspondence, and technical reports while at RCA. His correspondence includes weekly activity reports to his supervisor and letters to colleagues.

Ninety-two of Johnson's lab notebooks (1946-1957) from his time at RCA Laboratories can be found in Record group 26 of the David Sarnoff Research Center records (Accession 2464.09). In addition, Johnson's role in the sale of the RCA research laboratory in Tokyo to Corning in 1982 can be found in Record group 3, Series XI of the same finding aid.

Loren F. Jones papers, 1921-1996 - Page 11- Records of other RCA divisions 2464.80

Biographical Note

Loren F. Jones was born as Lorraine F. Jones in Kirkwood, Missouri on July 4, 1905. He received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in 1926 and began his career as a test engineer at General Electric in Schenectady the same year. From 1928 to 1929, Jones attended the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

In 1930, he was transferred to RCA Camden, but was immediately sent to Rome for five months to manage the installation of RCA's "Radio Roma" broadcast transmitter. After the successful conclusion of this project, which culminated with Benito Mussolini making Italy's first trans-Atlantic radio broadcast, Jones was sent to Moscow for several weeks.

Returning to Camden, Jones spent the next six years developing and installing radio and television broadcast transmitters, including the pioneering Empire State Building television system in 1931.

When the Soviet Union requested RCA assistance in establishing a television system in Moscow, Jones was the obvious choice. In 1937-1938, at the height of Stalin's purges, he spent eleven months supervising the installation of Moscow's first television station.

Back in the , Jones rose to senior positions in RCA. When the RCA Victor Division established the New Products Division in 1945, Jones was appointed Manager. Over the next two decades, he held a variety of posts, including Manager of Product Planning for RCA Industrial Electronic Products.

In the early 1960s, Jones joined the New Business Programs unit at the David Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton. In 1969, he was appointed Director of Education Development and retired the following year.

After his retirement, he worked as a consultant and died in 1999.

Scope and Content

The Loren F. Jones papers contain correspondence, diaries, patents, and writings documenting his career at RCA, especially from the 1930s to 1950s. Particularly valuable is the correspondence and writings that document his unique perspective of the Soviet Union gained during his work on the Moscow television station in 1937 to 1938.

William H. Offenhauser, Jr. papers, 1928-1972 Biographical Note

William Henry Offenhauser, Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1904. He earned degrees at Columbia College and the Engineering School of Columbia University, and began working at RCA Photophone as an electrical engineer shortly after graduation. Offenhauser's work focused on developing and improving the transmission of sound to film via light – a technology vital to producing sound motion pictures. He transferred to RCA Victor in 1931, and left the company some time before 1942, after which his research focused on sound motion picture standards, particularly on picture-sound synchronization.

Offenhauser was awarded the John Grierson International Gold Medal Award in 1977 by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), authored several books, and received 70 patents. He died in Connecticut in 1995.

Scope and Content

The William H. Offenhauser, Jr. papers are composed of notes, schematics, and correspondence from his work at RCA Photophone on recording sound on motion picture film. The papers include licensing agreements, meeting reports on the progress and problems of Photophone technology, parts catalogs, RCA press materials like the booklet, "RCA, who we are and what we do," and a copy of his patent for "Sound Reproduction" by light (2,018,315). Of special note is a list of movie theaters with sound motion picture projection rooms in New York in 1928.
