He was particularly concerned with trends in art and literature from the turn of the century to the end of the Weimar Republic. Richard Huelsenbeck asked Kleinschmidt to edit Memoirs of a Dada drummer, a book of Huelsenbeck's writings which first appeared in 1969. For research purposes, Kleinschmidt also gathered a large collection of correspondence about the German publication, Der Sturm and its founder Herwarth Walden. Processing History Rose Lachman processed the collection and wrote the finding aid. Scope and Content of Collection This collection of assembled material covers the years 1902-1975 but concentrates on the Dada art movement from its inception in 1916 by Richard Huelsenbeck, Hugo Ball and Tristan Tzara, through to the 1940s. The collection begins with Raoul Hausmann manuscripts and letters followed by Richard Huelsenbeck manuscripts and correspondence. Then appear copies of letters to Herwarth Walden arranged alphabetically by correspondent and preceded by a file (folder 6) giving the history of the magazine Der Sturm. The manuscripts and correspondence of Raoul Hausmann and Richard Huelsenbeck present a clear picture of the history of the Dada movement. Examples of phonetic poetry and essays on the topic of Dada are an integral part of this file. Hans J. Kleinschmidt also collected photocopied correspondence from Der Sturm Archive in order to write a history of the magazine Der Sturm and its founder, Herwarth Walden. These letters from artists and writers of the period give insight into the art developments of the early 20th century. Artists and writers include Guillaume Apollinaire, Sonia Delaunay, Otto Freundlich, Albert Gleizes, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Fernand Leger, Adolf Loos, August Macke, Thomas Mann, Franz Marc, Walter Mehring and Max Pechstein. Arrangement note Finding aid for the Hans J. 950005 2 Kleinschmidt research files, 1902-1975 ... The papers are arranged in four series: Series I. Raoul Hausmann manuscripts and letters, 1926-1970; Series II. Richard Huelsenbeck manuscripts and correspondence, 1956-1975; Series III. Der Sturm, 1902-1967; Series IV. Numerous annotations by Hausmann are seen on many of the sheets. All the manuscripts are carbon typescripts. When known, manuscripts are arranged by date according to when they were written or published. Publications are cited. This series also includes letters to Franz Jung, Cläre Jung and Richard Huelsenbeck. Some of the letters address his declining relationship with Huelsenbeck and how Hausmann's publications were being scrutinized and critiqued. Hanne Bergius "JOIN DADA!" ASPECTS OF DADA`S RECEPTION SINCE THE LATE 1950S Lecture for the symposium "Representing Dada", September 9, 2006 in the Museum`s Titus 1 Theater, 11 West 53rd Street, New York held in conjunction with the exhibition "Dada ", on view at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (June 18 - September 11,2006) I thank you for your invitation and I am delighted to talk to you in the context of this exhibition, which would also have made sense in Germany. The last one took place in 1994 and presented above all the Dada collection of the Kunsthaus Zürich. (1) When we now examine some aspects of Dada`s reception since the late 1950s, let us focus on two dada exhibitions: 1958 in Düsseldorf and 1977 in Berlin. They were the most important international Dada retrospectives in Germany since the " First International Dada Fair" of the Berlin Dadaists in 192o ( - beside one exhibition in 1966 which showed only documents.(2)) If "Dada. Documents of a Movement "(3) at Düsseldorf stood in the context of Neo-Dada, "Dada in Europe. Documents and Works"(4) was integrated into the larger "Tendencies of the Twenties" project as the 15th exhibition of the European Council in Berlin.(5). As the Cover of the Exhibition Catalogue of the "Tendencies of the Twenties" (1977) (Fig. 1) shows in addition to Dada , sections on Surrealism/New Objectivity, Constructivism and Architecture of the Twenties were also included. It was a very succesfull exhibition, by which Berlin capitalized in particular on the most exciting chapter in its history - the "Roaring Twenties".

The decision to produce our own version does not imply any criticism of the October translation (which was of great help to us) but merely reflects our decision to bring the Introduction in line with the bulk of the book to produce a stylisti cally coherent text. All translations of the primary texts interpolated by Kittler are our own, with the exception of the following: Rilke, "Primal Sound," has been reprinted from Rainer Maria Rilke, Selected Works, vol. • Approaching Performance Philosophy with Salomo Friedlaender (1871-1946)
PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY MINDING THE GAP – OF INDIFFERENCE: APPROACHING PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY WITH SALOMO FRIEDLAENDER (1871-1946) ALICE LAGAAY UNIVERSITY OF BREMEN One of the playful – and therefore also deadly serious – debates that has continued to polarise discussions within and around the Performance Philosophy network since its inaugural conference in Surrey in 2013, is the question of whether, or how, or in what way, or for what reason, and with what effect, we should, or should not, “mind the gap” between the wor(l)ds ‘Performance’ and ‘Philosophy’. There are those who argue in favour and those who argue against drawing a clear distinction between the two terms. I will not attempt to reconstruct the intricacies of the respective arguments or examine the sound reasoning on either side of this debate, nor will I begin to analyse the extent to which there might be (and probably is) some common ground between them.1 My purpose is not to consider the content so much as the structure of this debate, namely a ‘this vs. that’ or ‘either/or’ structure, and to present this as an example of polar differentiation, which, according to the artist-philosopher, or performance philosopher, Salomo Friedlaender (1871- 1946), corresponds to nothing less than the principle of all life-knowledge. Central to Friedlaender’s philosophy is the recognition of the importance of a non-place, a place of neutrality, which lies at the zero point of polar differentiation, i.e. between two polarities whatever they may be. According to Friedlaender’s theory, which draws most explicitly on the works of Kant and Nietzsche, this mysterious place “in between”, the gap, in other words, or zone of indifferentiation, is the very place from which all polarity stems.

The publishing opportunities in these periodicals allowed Lasker- Schüler the space to explore genre conventions and to begin including her own graphic art. Central to Lasker-Schüler’s creation of Prinz Jussuf and her increasing incorporation of visual art, were her unsuccessful and successful collaborations with Oskar Kokoschka and Franz Marc. The texts published in the two periodicals ranged from short theater, book, and art gallery reviews to her poetry and two epistolary novels. In Der Sturm, Lasker-Schüler serially published Briefe nach Norwegen, a series of letters written to her husband and Der Sturm editor Herwarth Walden on his two-week trip to Scandinavia. The letters were published over nine months and chronicle life in bohemian circles in Berlin, merging Lasker-Schüler’s emerging fantasy world into her artistic practice.

  • Hannah Höch’S Radical Imagination: a Study on the Transformation of Reality Through Space, Language and a Politicised Psychoanalysis
Hannah Höch’s radical imagination: a study on the transformation of reality through space, language and a politicised psychoanalysis. Volume 1 of 2: Written thesis Andrea Kay Tabernacle UCL PhD Thesis September, 2017 1 Declaration I, Andrea Kay Tabernacle confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis presents an analysis of Höch’s work in relation to the idea of radical imagination. It proposes that Höch activated radical imagination in her work, aiming to transform perceptions of reality, in order to create social change. In pursuit of such change, Höch was influenced both by psychoanalysis and philosophy, in particular, by Salomo Friedländer’s concept of creative indifference. The target for radical imagination is the dismantlement and reconstruction of the prevailing moral, social and aesthetic order, from its root. This study argues that its effect derives from its rootedness in the perception of subjective realities. Beginning in the unconscious processes of looking and the construction of concepts of self and other, it is radical in means as well as in intention towards fundamental changes in values. While not directed at specific political aims, it is argued here that there is, nonetheless, an ethical and political imperative. The research has been carried out through an examination of Höch’s work in context, including by reference to Walter Benjamin and Sigmund Freud. Her work is also considered in relation to other Dada artists and the writer, Til Brugman.
