The six-part story, which was originally devised by Brian Hayles for TV back in 1968, will be out on audio in November – and form another part of Big Finish’s massive fiftieth anniversary celebrations. And what celebrations they will be! As I write, we’re well into recording our multi-Doctor special The Light at the End, and it’s been a blast. History of Intellectual Culture www.ucalgary.ca/hic/ · ISSN 1492-7810 2001 God, Darwin, and Loyalty in America: The University of Tennessee and the Great Professor Trial of 19231 Kimberly Marinucci Abstract This article examines an academic freedom controversy at the University of Tennessee that led to the dismissals of seven faculty members. In the 1920s, evolution teaching in public education pitted the religious fundamentalists against advocates of science and intellectual freedom. The battle dramatized the meaning of these institutions as havens of democracy. In the 1920s, fears of Darwinism became intertwined with perceptions of citizenship and defi nitions of national loyalty. Events at this public university also highlight the politics of educational lead- ership. Finally, they foreshadow the dramatic courtroom showdown in 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee. The Scopes trial constitutes a defi ning historical moment of the twentieth century and symbolizes the resistance to cultural change. Such a treatment advances the current literature by highlighting the greater vulnerability of academic freedom at state institutions determined by economic dependence. As well, it incorporates developments at other institutions and the role of national higher education associations. Additional sources from the AAUP and the ACLU place Tennessee in the broader context of the cause of civil liberties. In 1922, Dr. Jesse Sprowls, Professor of Secondary Education at the University of Tennessee adopted James Harvey Robinson’s The Mind in the Making (1921) for a course he planned to teach. The text drew paral- lels between the mental development of humans and Darwin’s theory of evolution, the latter representing a loaded issue among state legislators who held the power of the purse over public university appropriations. -

Conservation, Gender, and the Tennessee Valley Authority During the New Deal
ABSTRACT BRADSHAW, LAURA HEPP. Naturalized Citizens: Conservation, Gender, and the Tennessee Valley Authority during the New Deal. (Under the direction of Katherine Mellen Charron and Matthew Morse Booker). Broadly, this thesis is an examination of the conservation movement and the Tennessee Valley Authority from the Progressive Era through the New Deal. The creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1933 had been premised upon earlier efforts to capture the river’s power and harness it to meet social needs. Harnessing hydroelectricity to remedy social and economic conditions in the South required both environmental engineering techniques and social engineering methods. By placing women at the center of the story, both in terms of their activism in bringing a conservation plan in the Tennessee River Valley into fruition, and in terms of the gendered implications of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s power policy, this thesis seeks to reexamine the invisible role that the construction of power politics had on the South, and the nation as a whole. This teacher resource guide is the final component of that curriculum and includes information on the content goals in waste reduction education and methods to help teacher integrate instruction to meet those goals in daily classroom lessons. The guide is presented in five sections. Section 1 provides an overview of the new materials that includes educational objectives, a cross-reference to statewide curriculum goals, and a list of materials in the activity packets. Section 2 presents a history of the problem of waste, the Oregon hierarchy of solutions, and special waste reduction concerns, Section 3 discusses the teaching methods that include making use of technology, games, simulations, and parental and community involvement. Exemplary programs are recognized. Section 4 pre ,nts programs to supplement the implementation of the curriculum thdt include an awareness week, a classroom resource center, and plays and songs. -

In the 18th and 19th centuries, libraries were personal collections of books for the elite. Volumes on philosophy, law, natural history, science, religion, and history lined the bookshelves of those who could afford books and—what’s more important—those who could actually read them. During the past century, library privileges became an Ameri- can right. A number of philanthropists from Andrew Carnegie to Bill Gates contributed to the changing nature of libraries, both physical and virtual. Our perceptions of libraries have changed constantly during the 20th century as collections became more centralized, stan- dardized, and accessible. At the beginning of the 21st century there is another wave of change for libraries. -

Prophecy LARP Rulebook By Area Effect An opponent may say “<Incantation> Area Effect <Effect>”. This affects EVERYONE within the sound of the caster’s voice, regardless of whether they can see the caster. Covering your ears so that you cannot hear will not stop the magic, and is considered cheating! Some area effect magic will also have a Level. In this case, it will affect anyone with a “Level of Resistance” less than the level of the effect that is within the sound of the caster’s voice. If you are so far away that you hear only a garbled cry and cannot make out what the caster is saying, you are not affected. Another type of Area Effect may be called “to the room.” In this case, all individuals in the room where the effect is called will be affected. “To the room” cannot be called outdoors. By Touch Some magical effects may be delivered by touch. This may only be done to a willing or helpless target! The caster should lightly touch the target with a hand-held spell packet to signify the “touch”. By Type Some Effects may be specific to one or more type of creature or characteristic. In this case the Type will be stated after the Effect, for example “Charm Undead”. If you are not of the indicated type, you will not be affected. By Name Some Effects may be specific to you by name. In this case the opponent will state: “By name <Your Name> <Incantation> <Effect> <Level>”. Your “Level of Resistance” is HALVED against such a spell (round down). -
