This story is set in the closing months of the Spanish Civil War with the TARDIS arriving just before a bombing raid and the crew finding themselves trying to help a struggling Republican unit. It's one of those stories that benefits very much from the setting, with the inevitable fact that the Republicans are doomed hanging over events. There are also a number of nice touches bringing the setting to life, and a good mix of peril and humour. Nonetheless, this is an alien invasion story, not a straight historical, with the Nationalist bombing having awoken something nasty in a nearby cave. The monster has some original traits, although its function in the story is mostly just as something to run away from. Even so, the story is structured so as to give Fiesta of the Damned ups and downs in the conflict, with a few twists here and there to keep things moving and a reason for the soldiers' reluctance not to simply shoot it on sight. Nonetheless, it's not the monster that's the real pleasure here. Rather, its the characterisation and the quieter moments of reflection and dialogue that lift this above the average. The Republican leader is notable here, a decent man caught up in the conflict that has engulfed his entire country, and so is Mel. The latter has enough nods to her characterisation on the TV show to be clear it's the same person, but she's far better written here, a strong and compassionate character who has, perhaps, grown in the years that are supposed to have passed for her since Dragonfire. By putting her in a darker and more serious setting, this manages to do a better job of developing Mel than the preceding episode, A Life of Crimedid, although Ace, oddly enough, seems to be closer to her TV self than she was when paired with Hex. The Seventh Doctor seems to work best when viewed against a backdrop of war so this story's Spanish Civil War setting ought to have been a slam dunk for me. So why did I feel distinctly underwhelmed at its conclusion? Both companions are less interesting when viewed together and the characterization of Ace in particular seems to have regressed. Of all of the Doctors working with Big Finish, the Seventh is most in need of a brand new companion to show him at his best. I also feel that the insertion Fiesta of the Damned science fiction elements into this story took the focus away from its setting for me though the zombie conceit is handled pretty well. • The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: the Life Cycle of the Child Performer
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Humanities Faculty School of Music April 2016 \A person's a person, no matter how small." Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

Doctor Who: A Personal Voyage The second most common question I hear whenever I bring up Doctor Who is “What is Doctor Who?” (the most common one being “Who is Doctor Who?”) It’s really hard to summarize. Too few words and you don’t capture the spirit of it. Too many and you quickly alienate the newcomer. I’ve heard people describe it as “the story of an alien who travels through time and space in a box that’s bigger on the inside.” That’s great. It encapsulates the strangeness inherent in such a series. The only problem is that you shouldn’t just give all of this info to a newcomer right off the bat.

  • A Student's Guide to Cold Fusion
A Student’s Guide to Cold Fusion Edmund Storms KivaLabs, Santa Fe, NM (updated, April 2012) Abstract Evidence supporting cold fusion (LENR) is summarized and requirements an explanation must take into account are justified. A plausible nuclear-active-environment is identified by ruling out various possibilities and by identifying an environment that is common to all methods used to produce LENR. When this environment is combined with a plausible mechanism, many testable predictions result. These insights and proposals are offered to help clarify understanding of LENR and to suggest future studies. FOREWORD My interest in cold fusion began shortly after Pons and Fleischmann announced their claims in 1989, while I was a conventional research scientist working at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) on methods to produce nuclear energy for applications in space. A Ph.D. in radiochemistry from Washington University in St. Louis gave me knowledge about both material behavior and nuclear interaction. I mention this only because “believers” in cold fusion are sometimes identified in critical writings as being ignorant and/or gullible. The only difference between my approach and that of skeptics was my willingness to explore the idea. Since retiring from LANL 22 years ago, I have continued to investigate the subject using laboratory research and to write papers including several scientific reviews and a book. The large collection of references, now nearly 4000 acquired in this effort, was used to create the original LIBRARY on www.LENR-CANR.org. Jed Rothwell keeps this collection of literature up to date and the website functional. Literature on the subject of cold fusion has grown beyond a point where casual reading can lead to useful scientific understanding.
