I gave this book 3 stars out of 5, balancing good Daak and bad Hulk. Paul Cornell is a British writer of science fiction and fantasy prose, comics and television. In the 26 th century the Earth Empire is in a death struggle with voracious Dalek forces yet still riven Doctor Who: Nemesis of the Daleks home-grown threats. Doctor Who fans in the s and s were a pretty devoted lot. It's a magnificent illustration of why I despise multi-part storytelling with a passion. Davros has activated the long-dormant Doctor Who: Nemesis of the Daleks army hidden there, converting them to the white and gold colour scheme applied to the Daleks he created on the planet Necros in Revelation of the Daleks. However all the creators involved have managed the ultimate task of any artisan — to Doctor Who: Nemesis of the Daleks engaging, thrilling, fun work which can be equally enjoyed by the merest beginner and the most slavishly dedicated and opinionated fans imaginable. The Doctor is now accompanied by Bernice Summerfieldand it is not long before the two discover that Daak's former team the "Star Tigers" are alive and well, having been presumed dead when their vessel crashed in the previous story. But otherwise, quite an enjoyable read. It's a magnificent illustration of why I despise multi-part storytelling with a passion. Performance and Analytics. For most of its run and in all its guises the Doctor Who title suffered from criminally low budgets and restricted access to concepts, images and character-likenesses from the show many actors, quite rightfully owning their faces, wanted to be paid if they appeared in print… but diligent work by successive editors gradually bore fruit and every so often fans got a real treat….

    2019 Gally Academic Track Friday, February 15, 2019 3:00-3:15 KEYNOTE “The Fandom Hierarchy: Women of Color’s Fight For Visibility In Fandom Spaces” Tai Gooden Women of Color (WoC) have been fervent Doctor Who fans for several decades. However, the fandom often reflects societal hierarchies upheld by White privilege that result in ignoring and diminishing WoC’s opinions, contributions, and legitimate concerns about issues in terms of representation. Additionally, WoC and non-binary (NB) people of color’s voices are not centered as often in journalism, podcasting, and media formats nor convention panels as much as their White counterparts. This noticeable disparity has led to many WoC, even those who are deemed “important” in fandom spaces, to encounter racism, sexism, and, depending on the individual, homophobia and transphobia in a place that is supposed to have open availability to everyone. I can attest to this experience as someone who has a somewhat heightened level of visibility in fandom as a pop culture/entertainment writer who extensively covers Doctor Who. This presentation will examine women of color in the Doctor Who fandom in terms of their interactions with non-POC fans and difficulties obtaining opportunities in media, online, and at conventions. The show’s representation of fandom and the necessity for equity versus equality will also be discussed to craft a better understanding of how to tackle this pervasive issue. Other actionable solutions to encourage intersectionality in the fandom will be discussed including privileged people listening to WoC and non- binary people’s concerns/suggestions, respectfully interacting with them online and in person, recognizing and utilizing their privilege to encourage more inclusivity, standing in solidarity with them on critical issues, and lending their support to WoC creatives.

The absent postcolonial transition in Doctor Who Lindy A Orthia The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract This paper explores discourses of colonialism, cosmopolitanism and postcolonialism in the long-running television series, Doctor Who. Doctor Who has frequently explored past colonial scenarios and has depicted cosmopolitan futures as multiracial and queer- positive, constructing a teleological model of human history. Yet postcolonial transition stages between the overthrow of colonialism and the instatement of cosmopolitan polities have received little attention within the program. This apparent ‘yawning chasm’ — this inability to acknowledge the material realities of an inequitable postcolonial world shaped by exploitative trade practices, diasporic trauma and racist discrimination — is whitewashed by the representation of past, present and future humanity as unchangingly diverse; literally fixed in happy demographic variety. Harmonious cosmopolitanism is thus presented as a non-negotiable fact of human inevitability, casting instances of racist oppression as unnatural blips. Under this construction, the postcolonial transition needs no explication, because to throw off colonialism’s chains is merely to revert to a more natural state of humanness, that is, cosmopolitanism. Only a few Doctor Who stories break with this model to deal with the ‘sociopathetic abscess’ that is real life postcolonial modernity. Doctor Who: A Personal Voyage The second most common question I hear whenever I bring up Doctor Who is “What is Doctor Who?” (the most common one being “Who is Doctor Who?”) It’s really hard to summarize. Too few words and you don’t capture the spirit of it. Too many and you quickly alienate the newcomer. I’ve heard people describe it as “the story of an alien who travels through time and space in a box that’s bigger on the inside.” That’s great. It encapsulates the strangeness inherent in such a series. The only problem is that you shouldn’t just give all of this info to a newcomer right off the bat.
