Amber Burns has been a resident choreographer for the Duluth Playhouse and other theaters in the Duluth since 2010. Choreographer Credits include: Spring Awakening, Singing in the Rain, Nutcracker, Godspell, , , Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Peter Pan, Things to Ruin, Wayside School, Shrek, , Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Reefer Madness. Her work has been seen on the Duluth Playhouse stage, Renegade Theater, Marshall School, Minnesota Ballet, University of Minnesota Duluth, and various dance companies across the Northland. This will be Amber’s first time directing and choreographing a show.

Audition Information

AUDITIONS: Saturday, August 27 from 3:00-6:00pm | Singing auditions only. Prepare 16-32 bars of a Pop Rock song, i.e. Green Day, Panic at the Disco, , etc. Accompaniment will be provided.

CALLBACKS: Sunday, August 28. Time TBA.

 Auditions will be held at the Playhouse Conservatory (230 West Superior St; entrance on 3rd Ave. West between Superior and Michigan St) If you cannot make these auditions contact Robert Lee, [email protected], 218.733.7559 to arrange another time.

 Bring a picture and resume along with the audition form filled out (attached to the packet). Sample picture resumes are available on our website (duluthplayhouse.org under ‘auditions’ tab).

 The Duluth Playhouse auditions are open to all actors and actresses, including those who may be auditioning for the first time and professional or Equity actors and actresses.

Rehearsal and Performance Information:

Rehearsals begin December 12 and will typically be Monday – Friday 6pm-10pm. Times during tech week vary.

Performance Dates: February 2 – 18: Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30pm. Performances will be in the Underground.

American Idiot: Synopsis and Character Breakdown

Synopsis American Idiot follows the exhilarating journey of a new generation of young Americans, lead by friends Johnny, Tunny and Will, as they struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world, borne along by Green Day's electrifying score. When the three disgruntled men decide to flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the armed forces, Michael must stay home to attend familial responsibilities, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous drug addition. This high-octane show includes every song from Green Day's American Idiot, as well as several songs from follow-up release, .

Character Breakdown: JOHNNY: Male, 20-30, The self-proclaimed "." Bored of his do-nothing, go-nowhere existence, he takes off for the city to get a new lease on life. He wages an inner war between a budding love for Whatsername and growing dependency on his alter ego, St. Jimmy, and drugs. (Guitar experience preferred) - Baritone Range

WILL: Male, 20-30, Johnny's friend. He ends up staying in Suburbia to take care of pregnant girlfriend Heather. The more he stays on the couch, the more he becomes slowly disconnected from the world and his own relationships. – Tenor Range

TUNNY: Male, 20-30, Johnny's friend who follows him to the city and eventually enlists in the army and is sent to war. Tunny suffers serious injuries. During his rehabilitation, he falls in love with his nurse, Extraordinary Girl, and she returns home with him. - Tenor Range

ST. JIMMY: Male or Female, 20-30, Johnny's rebellious, drug-dealing alter ego. A figment of Johnny’s imagination that eventually convinces Johnny to choose Jimmy and drugs over Whatsername. Tenor – Range

WHATSERNAME: Female, 20-30, A girl in the city who falls for Johnny. A rebellious activist who is willing to follow Johnny to the ends of the earth, but fights to have him embrace their relationship rather than pursue his addiction. - Mezzo Soprano Range

HEATHER: Female, 20-30, Will's girlfriend in Suburbia. She discovers she is pregnant but has difficulty telling her boyfriend of the news. she settles down with him, she struggles to maintain their relationship with his despondency and eventually leaves him. - Mezzo Soprano Range

EXTRAORDINARY GIRL: Female, 20-30, A girl in the Middle East who appears as a sexual hallucination to injured Tunny. Attractive and mysterious, she later appears as his nurse and accompanies him home after the war. (Some dance skill preferred) Mezzo Soprano Range

ENSEMBLE: Men and Women, 20-30, will play various roles throughout the show.
