At this juncture, we must increase our involvement in the political process or lose the ability to protect our members nationwide. In order to overcome some of the challenges we face, we must maintain and increase our involvement in the political process. We cannot afford to allow Wisconsin’s Governor Scott Walker, or Ohio’s AGovernor John Kasich, or Florida’s Governor Rick Scott and too many others to continue blaming workers for state financial problems that are the product of fiscal irresponsibility on the part of others. Our voice must be heard on the local level as well as the national level. Make no mistake, we are in the fight of our lives. As we head into the 2012 election cycle, we have the opportunity to act and not just stand by as our rights are stripped away. That is why, with the approval of the General Executive Board, the Interna- tional has engaged the services of Solidarity Strategies, a Washington-based firm that is providing assistance to the IATSE’s Political Action Committee and politi- cal fundraising efforts that will help us attain a greater voice in politics. Like it or not, providing financial support to legislators that stand with us undoubtedly enhances our voice. In short, we must become a bigger player in the game. For many in the popula- tion it was marked by an extra day of rest and maybe a backyard bar- beque. The annual newspaper articles made an appearance and each contained the obligatory discussion about why the long weekend at the beginning of September is not merely a marker for the end of summer, but rather recognition of the labor movement. AFor those of us that are a part of the labor movement, this Labor Day felt different than ones of years past. The events of the past few months have reminded us that there are some that see labor as an obstacle to their agenda. There are some that feel the influence of labor in society should be diminished and there are some that are putting a tremendous amount of ef- fort into accomplishing that goal.

Welcome to Calgary, Canada’s fast growing, oil-rich boom city, Heart of the New West and Home of The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. If you come by plane, on the drive from the airport you’ll notice oil storage tanks painted with friendly working characters doffing their hats to you. This July, if you drive downtown on 9th Avenue, you might notice a tri-fold billboard with photographs of two women with cowboy hats. As the slats turn, you can see that they too are making a kind of gesture with their hats. And you can see that the hats are not exactly what they seem. The billboard is Donna White’s first project since her recent return to the Calgary area from Grand Prairie, and a stint in Saskatoon where she got her MFA at the University of Saskatchewan. There she made a series of provocative billboards, also of normal-looking women of different ages, who also wore something unusual, in this case strange Elizabethan-looking paper ruffs around their necks. If you went to the Mendel Art Gallery where the 2006 exhibition, Beautiful as well as Brutal, was held, you could see the Cyborg Collars more closely. The lace patterns were virtually tatted by joining digital photographic details of the office buildings at the intersection where the billboards stood. Essentially, the women on the billboards wore the architecture of the buildings where they hypothetically worked.

    Politcal Science Do Terrorist Beheadings Infuence American Public Opinion? Sponsoring Faculty Member: Dr. John Tures Researchers and Presenters: Lindsey Weathers, Erin Missroon, Sean Greer, Bre’Lan Simpson Addition Researchers: Jarred Adams, Montrell Brown, Braxton Ford, Jefrey Garner, Jamarkis Holmes, Duncan Parker, Mark Wagner Introduction At the end of Summer 2014, Americans were shocked to see the tele- vised execution of a pair of American journalists in Syria by a group known as ISIS. Both were killed in gruesome beheadings. The images seen on main- stream media sites, and on websites, bore an eerie resemblance to beheadings ten years earlier in Iraq. During the U.S. occupation, nearly a dozen Americans were beheaded, while Iraqis and people from a variety of countries were dis- patched in a similar manner. Analysts still question the purpose of the videos of 2004 and 2014. Were they designed to inspire locals to join the cause of those responsible for the killings? Were they designed to intimidate the Americans and coalition members, getting the public demand their leaders withdraw from the region? Or was it some combination of the two ideas? It is difcult to assess the former. But we can see whether the behead- ings had any infuence upon American public opinion. Did they make Ameri- cans want to withdraw from the Middle East? And did the beheadings afect the way Americans view Islam? To determine answers to these questions, we look to the literature for theories about U.S. public opinion, as well as infuences upon it. We look at whether these beheadings have had an infuence on survey data of Americans across the last dozen years.

Paper prepared for the Annual Meetings of the Canadian Political Science Association, June 2004, Winnipeg The federal New Democratic Party experienced a dramatic electoral decline in the 1990s from which it has not yet recovered. Along with difficulties managing provincial economies, the NDP was wounded by Canada’s constitutional debates. The NDP has historically struggled to present a distinctive social democratic approach to Canada’s constitution. Like its forerunner, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), the NDP has supported a liberal, (English-Canadian) nation-building approach that fits comfortably within the mainstream of Canadian political thought. At the same time, the party has prioritized economic and social polices rather than seriously addressing issues such as the deepening of democracy or the recognition of national or regional identities. Travelling without a roadmap, the constitutional debates of the 80s and 90s proved to be a veritable minefield for the NDP. Through three rounds of mega- constitutional debate (1980-82, 1987-1990, 1991-1992), the federal party leadership supported the constitutional priorities of the federal government of the day, only to be torn by disagreements from within. This paper will argue that the NDP’s division, lack of direction and confusion over constitution issues can be traced back to longstanding weaknesses in the party’s social democratic theory and strategy. First of all, the CCF- NDP embraced rather than challenged the parameters and institutions of liberal democracy.
