Collection and Importation of an Egg Parasitoid - Anaphes nipponicus from China to the USA for Biological Control of the Cereal Leaf Beetle
Report - October 2007

This was a follow-up to a previous two-year foreign exploration project to search for cereal leaf beetle natural enemies in China. The US scientist (Bai) traveled to China during May 17 – 30, 2007 and collected extensively with Chinese collaborators in Fujian Province. Contacts were also established in Shanghai, Beijing and Fujian for future cooperative works. Local Chinese collaborators - Dr. Lin and his crew from Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, had surveyed potential rice fields before the arrival of the US scientist. The US/China team collected the rice leaf beetle Oulema oryzae and its egg parasitoid Anaphes nipponicus mainly from Fuzhou area.
After the departure of the US scientist, the collaborators in Fujian continuously collected in seven counties around Fuzhou area. About 15 field collection trips were made during the entire season. Four shipments of parasitized rice leaf beetle eggs were sent to Washington State University’s quarantine facility for further screening and host range/non-target testing. Each shipment contained up to a few hundred rice leaves with the leaf beetle eggs. About 40 parasitic wasps emerged from the shipped materials. They attacked CLB eggs readily in the quarantine facility and successfully completed one generation in the CLB eggs. More parasitoids need to be collected from China next year to continue assessment and testing of the potential of Anaphes nipponicus as biological control agent against CLB.
