The monographs concern not only subsequent stages of military activities, in which the Lithuanian army participated, but also a number of organizational and political aspects which affected the attitude of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania2. For the subsequent periods, mostly for the years 1675 –1676, the situation looks worse. So far the main source of knowledge about the size and composition of the Lithuanian army at the time were editions of manuscripts of the registers of the Lithuanian army, which were frequently misleading4. We shall try to show that most of them referred to unrealized projects, which often concerned another decade. The basic aim of this edition is to rectify many inaccuracies in the litera- ture of the subject matter, which have arisen owing to the uncritical use of those documents. The main source basis to reconstruct the composition of the Lithuanian army in three quarters of the service in the years 1675 –1676 constituted the billings of the Grand Lithuanian Sub-Treasurer Paweł Sapieha prepared for the Grodno Sejm of 1678/79, which are easily available to Polish historians. It must be underlined that the ma- terials have been already used by historians, e.g. in order to reconstruct the unitary composition of a banner of the medium cavalry – petyhorcy – in the Lithuanian army in the years 1675 –16766. In order to show the composition of the army in the first half of 1675, the author used the register of Lithuanian military units from the Cracow Archive of the Sanguszko Family, which seems to be the best source to present this issue. The Lithuanian army in the war between the Polish-Lithuanian Common- wealth and the Ottoman Empire participated in all the war campaigns except the first year of the conflict, when it was under the reconstruction after the dissolution of the army in the camp near the village of Dubienka, which had taken place a year before. The reason why the army was gathered was not the threat from the Turkish army, but the necessity to support King Michał Kory- but Wiśniowiecki in his struggle with the opposition. The magnitude of the re- constructed army, which in November formed the confederation in Kobryń to support the king, was estimated at 4,000 to 5,000 soldiers7. The paper analyzes Turkic glosses in Hungarian and Polish post/mediaeval texts from the point of view of their correlation with historical events, and of their com- patibility with the Piotrovskij-Altmann law. The correspondence is found to be very good in both cases. A slight modification is proposed to the equation to lend more lin- guistic significance to one of the coefficients. 0 Rationale The goal of the present paper is twofold. On one hand, it continues the work pioneered by Karl-Heinz Best (Best/Kohlhase 1983, Best 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010 and others), of collecting empirical evidence for the so-called Piotrovskij-Alt- mann law. By providing Hungarian and Polish data, it also adds to the issue of Turkic influence in Europe, first discussed quantitatively in Best (2005) using the example of German. On the other hand, it attempts to show how the quantitative and qualitative " ' ' ' K & '+ &D 8T 6 worked to demonstrate this to a more traditionalistic audience (1990: 371). My aim here is to illustrate how the quantitative approach can reveal a general ten- dency in a collection of detailed observations gathered and explained with the philological method. I will: 1. explain how I prepared the data for analysis, 2.

  • The Grand Duchy of Lithuania As a Successor of Rome in the Early
Open Political Science, 2018; 1: 170–181 Research Article Joanna Orzeł* From imagination to political reality? The Grand Duchy of Lithuania as a successor of Rome in the early modern historiography (15th–18th centuries)# https://doi.org/10.1515/openps-2018-0015 received December 17, 2018; accepted December 31, 2018. Abstract: At the beginning of the Renaissance Lithuanians understood that to join the civilization of Western Europe, it was necessary to have an appropriate (it means: very long) tradition. Like other countries, they had to create their own myth of origin. The most prestigious tradition was Greek-Roman antiquity, so the country’s origin story was invented, claiming its people descended directly from Rome. According to subsequent chronicles, the founder of the new state was Palemon (Publius Libon, initially Vilia). Using the theory of cultural memory of Jan and Aleida Assmann, the article presents how and why the Lithuanian myth of origin was transformed from 15th to the end of the 18th century. Particular attention was paid to the current needs of the state and the powerful noble families of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which also found their origins in the state myth. During the early modern period, the changes in the story were made (including the date of Palemon’s arrival in the Lithuanian lands). Nonetheless, the myth was not questioned for a long time. Even once it had already been established that it was no more than a fairy tale, the story was revived again, performing other functions in the 19th century. Keywords: cultural memory; foundation myth; mythical genealogy; Palemon; the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; Polish- Lithuanian historiography; Greco-Roman antiquity in early modern period.

  • The Triumphant Genealogical Awareness of the Nobility In
LITHUANIAN HISTORICAL STUDIES 22 2018 ISSN 1392-2343 PP. 29–49 THE TRIUMPHANT GENEALOGICAL AWARENESS OF THE NOBILITY IN THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA IN THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES Agnė Railaitė-Bardė (Lithuanian Institute of History) ABSTRACT This article attempts to show how the manifestation of ancestors was expressed in the genealogical awareness of the nobility in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, using publications to mark special occasions in the 17th and 18th centuries, genealogical trees and diagrams. The research seeks to establish what effect the exaltation of various battles had on the genealogical memory of the nobility in the Grand Duchy, bearing in mind the context of its involvement in one of the most famous battles it ever fought. The genealogical sources mentioned were examined in order to ascertain which battles and what memories of the commanders who fought in them were important to the genealogical awareness of the nobility, and why this memory was selective, for some battles and notable heroes from these battles are remembered and glorified, while others are simply forgotten. Memories of which battles were important to the genealogical presentation of certain families, how was it expressed, and in what period were the ancestors who participated in these battles remembered? The first part of the study presents the memory of ancestors as soldiers, and the ways this memory was expressed. The second part focuses on an- cestors who distinguished themselves in specific battles, and which family members who participated in battles are remembered and honoured, in this way distinguishing them from other ancestors. KEYWORDS: Grand Duchy of Lithuania; nobility; genealogical awareness; militaristic; heraldry.

Link to the lesson You will learn with whom Poland waged wars in the 17th century; how the Polish‐Russian war ended; what the course of the Polish‐Turkish war was. Nagranie dostępne na portalu epodreczniki.pl Nagranie abstraktu The 17th century was a period of armed conflicts for Poland, which weakened the country. One of the countries with which Poland waged war was Russia. After the death of Ivan IV the Terrible, a tsar of the Rurik dynasty, Russia faced deep crisis, uprisings and riots. This time was called as the „Time of Troubles”. This situation in the Tsardom of Russia was a consequence of the internal politics of the deceased tsar. In 1598 Tsar Feodor died, thus ending the reign of the Rurikids. The power was then seized by the boyar Boris Godunow, who was accused of murdering tsar Feodor's brother - Dmitry. However, a man calling himself Dmitri and professing to be the rightful heir to the throne returned to Russia in unclear circumstances and took over power. He married a daughter of a Polish magnate, Marina Mniszchówna. His reign had no support from his compatriots, because he did not respect Orthodox customs and surrounded himself with Polish Catholics. This led to riots in which Dmitry was slain. Power was then seized by the boyar Vasili IV of Russia.
