Dear BHCC Members,

I hope that you are as excited as the staff and I for all of the fun things to come this May! From the handful of golf demo days, the ladies, couples, and men’s golf events, the Mother’s Day brunch, Pool dining pavilion opening with Cinco De Mayo specials, and the Memorial Day weekend pool party, we are confident that there will be no shortage of things to enjoy at BHCC. A fun new thing that we’re trying on May 23rd is going to be Yoga & Brunch at the Pool! Stay tuned for more details on that.

In addition to these “can’t miss” events, each of the departments have a number of great things in store for you! The F&B team will be rolling out two new partnerships, the first with a local gourmet cheesecake business: 24th Cheesecakerie, and the second with Mark Klinger, PGA the famous Roos Roast coffee. New menu items are continuously popping up along CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER with updates to the cocktail list. GENERAL MANAGER

The pro shop has received a good bit of new merchandise for the Spring that includes Galvin Green, G4, Sport Haley, Gretchen Scott, Sofibella, Sport Haley, Greyson, RLX, my favorite: Peter Millar, and a really strong new brand for Barton: Holderness & Bourne. Be sure to check out the shop and remember if you don’t see your favorite brand, Kelly will be happy to special order whatever you’d like.

Andrew and his agronomy team will continue working hard to implement his cultivation practices that are aimed at strengthening green health, in preparation for a busy summer and the years to come. You can look forward to Andrew’s bi-weekly updates to begin soon which will outline what you can expect to see on the course.

You have probably seen many new faces while out on the course because we have officially welcomed 43 new members since December, with 20 having joined in April! You will find a listing of those that joined in April on page 4 of the Bartonian. Please help us in welcoming them to our family!

As Mrs. Edwards mentioned, we are committed continuous improvement and are looking forward to focusing on many great things ahead to keep this momentum going.

Kindest Regards,

Mark R. Klinger, PGA Chief Operating Officer/ General Manager MEMBERSHIP NEWS

Dear BHCC Members,

We are excited to welcome several new members into the Club this Springtime! April was a great month for membership – we added nearly 20 new members to our Barton Hills family across all membership categories. We continue to have promising conversations and have scheduled many tours of the facility. All in all, we have had more interest in BHCC then we have had in many years. As many of you are aware, we had a wonderful Fall promotion which called Makiah Huebner perspective members to action and encouraged individuals thinking DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP about joining to do so before our initiation fees increased. We have several ideas for how to keep this momentum going and look forward to introducing new promotions and recruitment strategies in the future. We believe the beautiful renovations of the clubhouse and pool complex are responsible for the increase in membership traffic.

Although recruiting new members is a vital part of sustaining our Club, keeping our existing Members and their families happy and engaged is always our priority. We have several events in the month of May that we encourage you to attend! The pool dining pavilion will be open following the Cinco De Mayo Party on May 5th and the Pool Opening Ryan Hovermale Party is scheduled for May 28th - we hope to see you there! DIRECTOR OF MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS Don’t forget to download the BHCC mobile app and follow us on social media as we are always looking to post fun content as well as reminders and event updates. Scheduling a tee time, or making a dining reservation on the app is simple and convenient. If you have questions about how to download the app or how to use any of the functions, please let us know and we would be happy to walk you through these actions!

We also want to take moment to remember those that have past recently. Our condolences are with the family and friends of Ralph Boehnke and Ronald Cresswell, both long time members of the club.

As always, we are here to help. Please let us know how to make your BHCC experience the very best it can be! We look forward to seeing you at the Club, on the course, or at some of our fantastic Spring events very soon.

Sincerely,

Makiah Huebner Director of Membership

Welcome to Barton Hills, We’re Glad You’re Here! GREENS Course Report

Dear BHCC Members,

Spring is always an exciting time of the year on the golf course. The grass begins to grow, the trees start budding, but it seems one day the grass is brown and the next day it’s green. Just like temperatures, grass growth var- ies throughout the springtime. One day it’s 70 degrees and beautiful, and the grass is growing like crazy; and the next day there is snow, and it shuts right down. Andrew Christesen GOLF SUPERINTENDENT

The greens department has been hard at work preparing for the 2021 golf season. We are working on the bunkers by edging, trimming, and cleaning them up after the winter. Cultural practices which include aerifying, topdressing, seeding, and verti-cutting are taking place. Getting these cultural practices done in the spring time will set the golf course up for success in the summer months. We are excited to see the leagues resume, and so many members out enjoying our golf course.

As high schools and colleges conclude their spring terms, more employees will start returning to golf course. The membership can then start to expect to see more detailed work on the course. Golf course quality and play will continue to rise with the warmer temperatures and increased use of the course by our members. We are very excited to host the USGA Open Champions qualifier on May 10th.

We are excited about the 2021 season, and we will look forward to seeing you out there!

Sincerely,

Andrew Christesen Golf Course Superintendent A Letter From Your Pro GOLF Course Report Golf is booming at Barton Hills with 2,000 rounds played so far this season and many more to come. With all this excitement from new and younger members joining, plus a number of lapsed golfers returning to our great game, we are set to ride this wave for another exciting summer. Event registration continues to fill up fast and sell out for many of our events, like the Men’s Tradition and Invitational, plus the Tuesday Night Couples League with over 40 teams. Mov- ing forward, we suggest you get registered for your favorite event sooner than later, so you are not left behind. For our Women’s Invitational, scheduled for June 23rd and 24th we anticipate selling out as the field has been limited to 72 players this year. Golf is booming at Barton Hills with 2,000 rounds played so far this season and many more to come. Our golf course continues to improve, but all this play requires your continued involvement by caring for the course. We ask that you leave the course in the same or better condition than you found it Pat Markley by fixing some extra pitch marks, replacing divots and raking our bunkers. HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL

For cart riding members, please scatter your cart traffic, use designated paths and stay away from our greens and tees when parking carts. If you bring guests, do your part and care for them by arriving early and inform them pri- or to their arrival about our dress code on the golf course, practice areas and inside the Clubhouse. In the event you are unaware of our dress code you can find it listed under the “golf traditions” portion of the 2021 yearbook. For members bringing three guests, we would highly recommend employing a cart caddie or forecaddie to add further care and enjoyment for your .

Many members continue to ask about booking golf online and what are some of the restrictions on guests or pitfalls when booking online. We would like to remind all members that you are welcome to book starting times online seven days in advance, but for tee times less than 24 hours out or on the same day, you must call in these requests. When booking a group, we ask that you enter all the names in your group or place a hold for players still in question or “join me” if you are open to having other members join you. For weekend start times, we have a lottery process for early morning times before 10:00 and this lottery is drawn on Thursday mornings. Guests on weekends and holidays are limited to one member with one guest prior to 10:00. In the event you have house guests or need to make even more advanced starting times, we ask you to arrange these requests with Pat and his Golf Professional team. Members can always enjoy the use of carts, caddies, to walk or take pull carts at any time. For those who would prefer caddies, we ask that you give us at least 24 hours advance notice and indicate the level of caddie you prefer because our rates have recently changed. Our new caddie rates, which include tip, are $65/$35 for Championship and $45/$25 for Captain level caddies for 18 or 9 holes.

Last, we continue to receive new inventory in our Golf Shop each day to help you look and play your best. Despite some of the pitfalls this pandemic continues to cause we remain dedicated to helping you find items. Shipping delays continue to cause havoc with many hard good items taking four to eight weeks to get for special orders. Some of the biggest delays for merchandise these days are bags, grips, golf balls and clubs. Stock apparel has been delayed as well from most vendors and some of our orders have seen long wait times. The next time you visit our Golf Shop and see something you like and intend to purchase, we recommend you pick it up that day because spe- cial orders might be unavailable or up to eight weeks delayed. As always, we are dedicated to assisting you with your merchandise needs.

In closing, to all of our new members, do not hesitate to reach out to us. We want to tell you all about the wonder- ful upcoming events and activities you should take part in. Our professional golf staff would love to get out and play golf with you, give you a course tour and answer any questions that you have to help make your experience more enjoyable. We look forward to seeing some new faces and families. On behalf of the entire staff we thank you for your continued support.

Dan Goldberg-Director of Tennis [email protected] PLATED What’s Cookin

Dear Barton Hills Country Club Membership,

May is on the horizon and the culinary staff at Barton Hills is preparing for another great summer season. We look forward to the early opening of the pool kitchen on May 5th and will be offering many specials to choose from in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. The pool menu for the month of May will be reduced in size but will still offer all the pizzas, salads and oven baked subs that we have all come to love. We will resume with the full pool menu on Memorial Day weekend with new and exciting offerings for the 2021 pool season. Chris Lothamer EXECUTIVE CHEF The month of May has additionally presented us with new opportunities to begin working with new purveyors and featuring some of their unique products. I wanted to take a minute in this communica- tion to acknowledge those purveyors and highlight some of the newer menu items we will be featur- ing at the start of the month. The dinner menu in the clubhouse will now be offering Michigan-based Sweet Grass Farms (Pickford, MI.) lamb chops. Unlike many of the lamb chops we are accustomed to from New Zealand, Australia and Colorado, the Michigan-raised lamb we will now be serving has a much milder flavor and does not leave a lingering “gamey” taste associated with lamb. We are excited to be featuring this new product and encourage all of our membership to give them a try during your next dining experience here at Barton Hills.

On a final note, I am extremely excited to announce our recent part- nership with the 24thCheesecakerie (Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Madison Heights). Through years of communication, planning and doing busi- ness together, Chef Sean from the 24thCheesecakerie and I have finally collaborated to bring his unique and delicious cheesecakes to Barton. If you are not familiar with the amazing cheesecakes pro- duced by the 24thCheesecakerie, then I can simply say they are the absolute most creative and best cheesecakes out there!! I highly en- courage you to save room for dessert during your dining experience and give the cheesecakes a try.

Thank you all for your continued support of the culinary operation here at Barton Hills Country Club. As always, I look forward to seeing you and your guests at the pool, on the golf course and in the clubhouse in the summer months. Have a safe and enjoyable May!

Sincerely,

Christopher Lothamer Executive Chef Happenings in May COCKTAIL HOUR

The season is off to a wonderful start with some great weather, lots of play, and many new food and beverage options. Chef Chris has been at the top of his game and has added tempting and tasty items to his already stellar menus. The bar has also seen some changes with new beer selections on tap and some new and old favorites on the craft cocktail menu. Make sure to try a Summer Sour or Pear Margarita.

I’m pleased to announce that Barton Hills Country Club will be using Open Table as our reservation site. Open Table is an industry leader in reservation Rick Hoyt management. It will provide a familiar interface for those that have already FOOD & BEVERAGE MANAGER used it and for anyone new to Open Table it’s as easy as going to an app on your phone or through our member site. Open Table will also allow the restaurant to offer more seating availability on those busy nights. A separate email will be sent to everyone on instructions for the upcoming change, so stay tuned!

Coffee coffee coffee! We’ve partnered with Ann Arbor’s Roos Roast to create a Barton Blend! Roos Roast is an Ann Arbor Icon in the coffee game. We are just in the beginning stages and there will be more infor- mation coming soon. The Barton Blend will be available in the dining rooms and Halfway House as well as whole bean to purchase for home.

Please join your friends and family in all our dining venues whether it’s in the Wine Bar for cocktails, on the Veranda for a sunset dinner, or in the Sunroom for a view overlooking the 18th. Our team of servers are eagerly waiting to provide top notch service to make each experience exceptional.
