Fall Commencement December 13, 2018 Message from the Chancellor On behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration at State University of Alexandria, please accept my sincerest congratulations for reaching this milestone in your life. Today is a special day that you will always remember, for today you will receive your LSUA diploma. We recognize your commitment, determination, and no doubt countless hours studying to achieve this remarkable goal. From this day forward, your future is changed for the better. Not only is your own life positively impacted, but the lives of your family and friends, our community, state, nation, and world.

As you walk across the stage today, I am sure you realize that you did not get here alone, but instead it was a combination of your support system, devoted faculty and staff, and our loyal community. To the parents, grandparents, spouses, children, and other loved ones of our graduates, I also say congratulations and thank you. This day would not be possible without your encouragement and understanding. Our faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to create and maintain a student-centered learning environment. Kudos to them!

LSUA takes great pride in knowing that students are at the center of our mission. Further, our supportive community has provided opportunities to our students that would not have been possible without them. LSUA is very grateful for the scholarships, financial support, and campus infrastructure projects that the LSUA Foundation and community have provided that have enhanced the student experience.

Although you are graduating from LSUA today, we hope this is only the beginning of a long and meaningful relationship. We look forward to hearing about your successes and know you will become our best recruiters. I encourage you to actively participate in the LSUA Alumni Association and connect with our alumni that are located all over the world.

Once again, congratulations to all of our graduates and best of luck in the future.

Billy Nungesser is the 54th Lieutenant Governor of the state of Louisiana. He was elected in 2015 and began his term in January of 2016. Billy left a career as a successful businessman to begin his political career following .

In 2005, Nungesser and his wife, Cher, rode out Hurricane Katrina at their ranch in southern Plaquemines Parish. In response to his own frustration over the slow response from government following Hurricane Katrina, Billy decided to run for Plaquemines Parish President in 2006. He was re-elected in 2010 with over 70% of the vote.

On April 20, 2010, Plaquemines Parish became Ground Zero for the nation’s biggest environmental disaster. In the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in the Gulf, Billy became the voice of Louisiana’s frustration.

During the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, named him the “hardest working man in Louisiana” and ABC named him Person of the Week during the same period. He continues to be the “hardest working man in Louisiana” to date on behalf of all of us.

Today, Billy is second in command in the executive branch and Louisiana’s ambassador as Commissioner of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. From natural disasters to promoting our great state….Billy Nungesser is a man for all of Louisiana. The Academic Regalia Code

Guidelines with respect to academic regalia derive from traditions passed on since the Middle Ages. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895 and devised an official Code of Academic Dress. In 1932, the American Council on Education presented a revised code which for the most part governs the style of academic dress today.

Black is the recommended color for all academic gowns. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed. Doctor’s gowns are faced with black velvet or the other color associated with the degree with three chevrons across the sleeves. The Chancellor’s gown is faced with four chevrons across the sleeves.

The hoods differ in length for the three degrees, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s and are lined with the official colors of the college or university conferring the degree, usually with one color forming a chevron pattern over the other. Hoods are edged and bound with velvet of the color appropriate for the degree and lined with the official colors of the college or university conferring the degree.

The colors associated with the different subjects are as follows:

Apricot Nursing Maize Agriculture Brown Fine Arts, Architecture Olive Green Pharmacy Citron Social Work Orange Engineering Copper Economics Pink Music Crimson Journalism Purple Law Dark Blue Philosophy Russet Forestry Drab Business Sage Physical Education Golden Yellow Science Salmon Pink Public Health Gray Veterinary Medicine Scarlet Theology Lemon Yellow Library Science Silver Gray Speech Light Blue Education White Arts, Letters, Humanities Degree with Honors

At each commencement, the University Medal for “Highest Academic Achievement” is awarded to the graduate receiving an associate degree and to the graduate receiving a baccalaureate degree with the highest GPA provided that more than 50 percent of the total hours attempted in pursuit of the degree have been earned at Louisiana State University of Alexandria.

Graduates receiving baccalaureate degrees may receive their degrees summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or cum laude. The determination for these designations is based on the student’s grade point average. Degrees are awarded summa cum laude to students whose grade point averages are within the 3.90 to 4.0 range. In order for a degree to be awarded magna cum laude, the grade point average must be within the 3.70 to 3.89 range. Degrees are awarded cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.50 and 3.69. Students who are awarded their degrees with honors must also have satisfied all additional requirements imposed by their college or department.

Students graduating with honors are recognized at commencement by wearing honors cords. Students graduating summa cum laude wear gold cords. Those graduating magna cum laude wear silver cords; cum laude graduates wear white cords.

GAMMA BETA PHI Honor Graduates

Gamma Beta Phi is a national collegiate honor and service organization. Students must have an overall 3.0 grade point average to be invited to become members. The gold satin stole worn by graduates signifies that they are members in good standing. The Mace

A mace is the traditional university symbol of educational authority and institutional identity and is presented at formal university rituals and traditions, such as commencement ceremonies.

The LSUA mace is forty-eight inches tall and weighs approximately ten pounds. It is crafted of wood from a fallen live oak tree native to the Louisiana State University of Alexandria campus and solid brass. The brass spacers that collectively form the shaft are engraved with milestone dates in the history of the university. The mace is topped with a four-sided acorn, calling attention to the fiftieth anniversary in 2010, the service of Louisiana State University of Alexandria to Louisiana and Central Louisiana in particular, desirable attributes imparted in graduates of Louisiana State University of Alexandria and embossed figures depicting “One World – Diverse – Intertwined.” The acorn is crowned with the familiar LSUA oak tree logo with the blue and gold banner ensigna.

Alexandria resident and master craftsman Glen Armand crafted and donated the mace in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Louisiana State University of Alexandria. The LSUA mace was first presented to the faculty, staff and students at the closing commencement exercises of the fiftieth anniversary, December 16, 2010. University Seal

The university seal was first developed as the University logo in 1994 and now stands as the official LSUA seal.

The focal point of the seal is the oak tree in the center. It symbolizes knowledge and stability and also represents the live oaks found on campus. The lines behind the tree are symbolic of both a rising sun and the row crops that surround LSUA. The waving banner on which Alexandria is written symbolizes the flowing Red River, and the surrounding circle is symbolic of lifelong learning. LSUA Distinguished Service Award Recipients Mr. Roy O.
