It is understood that the meeting will be planned by NLGA staff, in conjunction with NLGA Officers, and NLGA will assume costs of the meeting. Background: No bidders have emerged for the meeting. With COVID-19 and with uncertainty surrounding state budgets thru 2021, the responsibility of planning a meeting will fall to NLGA staff. NLGA staff note the greatest cost-savings occur having the meeting close to the NLGA office (in NKy). Proximity also allows NLGA staff to visit places in person and garner a greater number of bids for various planning pieces, in the hope of saving money. Only NJ and VA have NLGA member elections in 2021. Motion by: Lt. Governors Nungesser (LA-R), Hall-Long (DE-D), and Foley (NE-R) 2) We move to award the NLGA Business Meeting in December of 2022 to the NLGA staff to plan in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is understood the meeting will be planned by NLGA staff, in conjunction with NLGA Officers, and NLGA will assume costs of the meeting. Background: Louisiana Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser was NLGA Chair over the year (2020) in which both major NLGA meetings were cancelled. He provided service, commitment, availability, support, and direction to NLGA and its staff during these trying times. Yet, he never had the opportunity to chair an actual DC or Annual Meeting. He did previously contribute to NLGA by hosting a NLGA Annual Meeting. In recognition of the service and commitment of Lt. Gov. Nungesser to NLGA as NLGA Chair through COVID-19 and missing his opportunities to preside over meetings as a Chair, NLGA awards the NLGA Business Meeting in December of 2022 to New Orleans, Louisiana, to be planned by NLGA staff, in conjunction with NLGA Officers. NLGA will assume costs of the meeting in appreciation of Lt. Gov. Nungesser’s unique service. This (2022) is an election year for about half the states in the nation and some states will seat new elects who would be hosted here. Motion by: Lt. Governors Hall-Long (DE-D), and Foley (NE-R) Public Leadership in the Arts Award (3 min) Nominating Committee Report & Vote (5 min) Passing of the Gavel (5 min) .

  • Letter from State-Level Elected Leaders in All 50 States Supporting Betsy Devos for Secretary of Education
LETTER FROM STATE-LEVEL ELECTED LEADERS IN ALL 50 STATES SUPPORTING BETSY DEVOS FOR SECRETARY OF EDUCATION January 17, 2017 The Honorable Lamar Alexander Chairman U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions 428 Dirksen Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Chairman Alexander, As one of the most critical issues impacting the future of our nation, we must have a Secretary of Education committed to the needs of all of our nation’s children. Betsy DeVos has made it her life’s mission to find, support and push for education solutions in her home state of Michigan and across the country. She is an advocate and ally for all children, and we write to you today to express our support for her nomination to this important position as her confirmation hearing approaches. We represent elected state offices from all 50 states, and as such, we each know the impact of an overgrown federal government reaching into the states to push a one-size-fits all approach to education. No two states, localities or school districts are the same, nor are the needs of the children who reside there. Betsy DeVos understands this distinction and for years has embraced a variety of education solutions to meet this need. Her support for an all-of-the-above approach to K-12 education – from charter schools, to public, private and online education – defines the school choice movement that has helped countless children across many of our states. By advancing these innovative solutions from the Department of Education, Betsy DeVos will put children first and empower not only states to lead the way in making critical education decisions, but also empower parents to choose what type of education is best for their children.
