Bulletin of Insectology 63 (1): 137-152, 2010 ISSN 1721-8861 Bumble bees of the Susa Valley (Hymenoptera Apidae) Aulo MANINO, Augusto PATETTA, Giulia BOGLIETTI, Marco PORPORATO Di.Va.P.R.A. - Entomologia e Zoologia applicate all’Ambiente “Carlo Vidano”, Università di Torino, Grugliasco, Italy Abstract A survey of bumble bees (Bombus Latreille) of the Susa Valley was conducted at 124 locations between 340 and 3,130 m a.s.l. representative of the whole territory, which lies within the Cottian Central Alps, the Northern Cottian Alps, and the South-eastern Graian Alps. Altogether 1,102 specimens were collected and determined (180 queens, 227 males, and 695 workers) belonging to 30 species - two of which are represented by two subspecies - which account for 70% of those known in Italy, demonstrating the particular value of the area examined with regard to environmental quality and biodiversity. Bombus soroeensis (F.), Bombus me- somelas Gerstaecker, Bombus ruderarius (Mueller), Bombus monticola Smith, Bombus pratorum (L.), Bombus lucorum (L.), Bombus terrestris (L.), and Bombus lapidarius (L.) can be considered predominant, each one representing more than 5% of the collected specimens, 12 species are rather common (1-5% of specimens) and the remaining nine rare (less than 1%). A list of col- lected specimens with collection localities and dates is provided. To illustrate more clearly the altitudinal distribution of the dif- ferent species, the capture locations were grouped by altitude. 83.5% of the samples is also provided with data on the plant on which they were collected, comprising a total of 52 plant genera within 20 plant families. -

Die von BIRTHLER 1886 beschriebene Form nag]agensis und eine npu entdeck te paranagyagensis werden ausführlich dargestellt Ä b s t r a c t :The aut.hor desnribes dist.ribut.ion and appearance of the ground beetle Carabus obsoletus fossuli fer in Romania. Two forms are mentioned: nag) agensis (as stat.ed by BIRTHLER 1886) and a new one, named paranagyagensis. This form occurs evident!y in only two colours namely in dark copper and in blakish blue, whereas one of the special sign?; of nag) agensis is its richness of colour except these two restricted to paranagygensis. BIRTHLER fand und beschrieb im Jalire 1886 eine neue Carajbus-Form, die er Carabus obsoletus carpathicus-nagyägensis nannte. Dieser Name wurde zuerst von BIELZ 1887 Carabus obsoletus procerus und 1888 von SEIDLTTZ in Carabus obsoletus nagyägensis ge ändert und so in die taxonomische Literatur eingeführt. Wie er sichtlich wurde diese Unterart von Entomologen aus Hermannstadt (heute Sibiu) studiert und in der Umgebung Nagyäq (heute Sa- carimh) und Zlatna gesammelt. Laut FLFISCHFR (1983) handelt es sich "Unterform" von Ca rabus obsoletus fossulifer, doch wurde die Benennung im Laufe der Jahre unterschiedlich Hingestuft z.B. als variatio (SEIDLITZ 1988, CSIKI 19 15) als m orpha (BREUNING 1936) als a b - erratio (PANIN 1956) als subspecies (SZEL 1985, wozu Carabus obsoletus fossulifer FLEISCHER 1093 und Carabus obsoletus pruneri MALLASZ 1901 gehören sollen) BREUNING beschreibt die morphologischen Merkmale deutlich: wie fossulifer, aber die Gestalt, auffallend groß, breit und plump: Länge 26-30 mm" Ich möchte dabei auch die breite Farbva- riabilität: der Unterart betonen: vorwiegend grün, kupferfarben, rötlich, aber auch blau verschiedenen Schattierungen. -

Towards an Ecological Network for the Carpathians This publication is the result of the BBI/Matra programme entitled “Development of an Ecological Network for the Carpathians”, which was implemented between April 2006 and April 2009 and funded by the BBI Matra program of the Dutch government. Towards an Ecological Network for the Carpathians Preface The purpose of the project was to support the imple- mentation of the ‘Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians’ (herein- after Carpathian Convention) that entered into force in January 2006 after ratification by four contracting par- ties. The development of an ecological network in the Carpathians, as a constituent part of the Pan-European Authors: Ecological Network, is one of the important objectives of the Convention. Maistriau B-7000 Mons, Belgique INTRODUCTION Several European countries have included wild apoids in lists of strictly protected animais. This raises sorne questions. Do wild bees really need conservation operations? Is strict protection an effective way for the conservation of'wild bees? Ifnot, is there a better "vay? ECOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF wn.n BEES The ecological importance of wild bees is generally underestimated. Ecologists often forget that, in our climates, a majority of flowering plants are fertilized by Apoids. The mutuai dependence is particularly noticeable between long-tongued species and plants with zygomorphic flowers. Short-tongued bee plants are generally less linked with a particular pollinator and, if one bee species were to disappear, it could he easily replaced by another. On the contrary, long-tongued bee plants are far more specialised in their relation with pollinators. If one long-tongued bee species disappeared locally, its pollinating role couId not be taken by another. One family highly associated with wild bees must receive special consideration: leguminous plants are an essential link in the nitrogen cycle which is often the limiting factor of ecosystem productivity. They have nearly no multiplication by vegetative ways. They are generally allogamie and their floral' conformation makes them nearly inaccessible to aIl short tongued insects. 54 P. RAS11üNT An extinction, or strong rarefaction, of leguminous pollinators could be an ecological catastrophe leading to an alteration of one of the most limiting biogeochemical cycle. -
